SCAM ALERT St. Anthony of Padua parish continues to receive information from parishioners, other parishes and the Diocese of Rockville Centre, that requests for money have been made via email by a person using a pastor’s name with a bogus email address. In other in-stances members of the congregation have received text messages, supposedly from the pastor, requesting that they purchase gift cards because the “pastor” wanted them for patients battling cancer.

The instruction in the text was to expose the PIN number and then take a picture of the card with the PIN number back to the person sending the text. These are fraudulent requests. Know This: St. Anthony of Padua, Fr. Joe Mirro, utility companies and government agencies will not contact you demanding immediate payment by prepaid gift card. Caution! Be suspicious of callers who demand immediate payment for any reason. Information Never give out personal or financial information to anyone who emails or calls you unsolicited. Remem-ber that anyone who has the number on a prepaid gift card has access to the funds on the card. Know Them: Never wire money, provide debit or credit card numbers or prepaid gift card numbers to someone you do not know. Be aware that scammers can manipulate CALLER ID and calls may falsely appear to come from St. Anthony’s, Father Joe Mirro, the police, government agencies or your utility company. If you receive a phone call, email, or text message instructing you to purchase a prepaid merchant GIFT/DEBIT CARD, CRYPTOCURRENCY, or MONEY ORDER to pay: Law enforcement for bail * IRS for owed taxes * Utility company to avoid service interruption * Immigration officials to avoid deportation/arrest * Social Security officials for fraudulent activity/warrant/arrest involving your Social Security number * Ransom * Hospital for emergency treatment of a loved one 1

Pope Francis tells the ‘Secret of Life:’

Fix your gaze on Jesus' face

ZENIT — Pope Francis shared the “secret of life” in a Aug. 17 message, sent on his behalf by Vati-can Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, to the annual Rimini Meeting in Italy. The Meeting for Friendship Among Peoples, sponsored by the Catholic Communion and Liberation Movement in Rimini, Italy, draws hundreds of thousands of participants every year. The 40th Meeting, is convened Aug. 18-24, 2019, on the theme: “Your name was born from what you gaze upon.” In the message, the Holy Father speaks of how no one is anonymous to Christ and how he knows each of us and our dignity, profoundly. The Church has been announcing this truth to man, he stressed, for 2000 years. “Christ loved us, He gave His life for us, for each of us, to affirm our unique and unrepeatable face.”

“But why is it so important that today, this an-nouncement resound again?” he asked. “Because so many of our contemporaries fall under the blows of life’s trials, and find themselves alone and aban-doned.” He lamented how so many are treated as statistics, as numbers, instead of as faces, as people, with names and stories. “We must never forget it, especially when the culture of waste marginalizes, discrimi-nates and exploits, threatening human dignity.” “How many are forgotten and urgently need to see the face of the Lord in order to find themselves again!” he added. If this is the case, he pondered, “what hope can there be in this world? How can man find himself, and hope?” He cannot do it only through reasoning or strategy, Francis acknowledged. “Here then, is the secret of life, that which brings us out of anonymity: to fix our gaze on Jesus’ face and become familiar with Him,” Francis stressed. “Looking at Jesus,” he continued, “purifies our sight and prepares us to look at everything with new eyes. Meeting with Jesus, looking at the Son of Man, the poor and the simple found themselves, they felt loved deeply by a love without measure.”

God’s message this week: Because He loves us, God wants us to learn right from wrong!

The reading from the New Testament this week talks about discipline. Now, I don’t think that any of us like getting into trouble. But, what would happen if we did something wrong, and no one disciplined us?

How would we ever learn right from wrong? In the letter to the Hebrews, the apostle Paul says that God disciplines the people that He loves. What?? If God loves me, why would He want to punish me? Well, it is because God loves me so much that He wants to teach me right from wrong, good choices versus bad choices. He wants to train up each one of us to make right choices: thinking of others and acting with love toward everyone. In-stead of being angry that we were punished, we need to stop and think of what we did wrong, and how we should act next time. Knowing how we

can act with love and kindness to our brothers and sisters will help us to pass through the narrow gate that Luke talks about in his Gospel.

Prayer for the week: Dear God, we know that you love us. We

know that you want us to grow closer to you and follow the ex-

ample of your Son, Jesus. Help us to do these things every day!

Amen!

Thank You! On behalf of our Pastor, Msgr. Mirro, and the officers and members of the Fr. Thomas A. Judge Knights of Co-lumbus, we wish to thank all St. An-

thony's parishioners, their families, friends and volunteers for helping to make the 28th Annual St. Anthony's Family Feast & Festival a success! We managed to get through the first four days of the Feast with good weather and then we were hit with the devastating storm on Sunday shortly before the gate was opened which miraculously spared the fairgrounds and we were able to open. Between the storm and the hot humid weather feast attendance was down compared to last year. After all expenses, feast net proceeds totaled $36,656.84 of which $18,328.42 went to St. Anthony’s parish and $18,328.42 to the Knights of Columbus for their various charitable and other programs. Although the Feast net proceeds were down, the Grand Ca$$h Raffle did very well! A total of $32,320.00, was received from the sale of raffle tickets less $14,248.35 (prizes & expenses) result-ing in net proceeds of $18,071.65, which will be used to help fund the repair and painting of the outside front of our church. Thank you again for your participation and generosity! Fred Leonardo, Feast Chairman St. Anthony's Family Feast & Festival Committee

Eucharistic Ministers!!

There is presently an URGENT NEED for Eucharistic Ministers to bring the Holy Eucharist to the patients at Huntington Hospital! St. Anthony’s Church is committed to this ministry each Thursday—this means volunteering for only one Thursday every four weeks. Please consider your precious opportunity to love and serve Jesus in “His most distressing disguise”! EMs who have done this ministry in the past would be most welcomed. Please contact Regina Whitaker at 631-757-7028.

“Feed My Lambs” is the weekly request of the SVDP society to parishioners to bring to Church the one or two items of which the Food Pantry is in low supply.

This week’s items are: Cereal, Crackers, Coffee, Box Juices, Chunky Soups, Solid white tuna fish. Of course any other items you wish to donate will be gratefully accepted, but the items that we are concentrating on will help us ensure that these items will be in supply for our clients. All items can be left in the rear of the Church before and after all weekend Masses. During the week, items can be brought to Parish Outreach, between the hours of 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. Thank you for helping us minister to the lambs of our community who are in need.

Please do not leave perishable items, opened items, clothing items, household items in the Vestibule Food Bin. Thank you!
