Ever since the Wise Men opened their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh before the infant Jesus, we have all wanted to present our own gifts to Him as well. Our hearts are so full of gratitude to God for the

great gift of himself in the newborn Jesus, we want to show our gratitude by giving gifts to Him through his church. Many people use Christmas and the year end as a special time to give to St. Anthony of Padua Church and also positively impact their federal and state income taxes. Did you know that "charitable giving" is one of only a few tax deductions that has not been eliminated. Christmas and year end giving provide many advantages to you, the donor. All gifts made on or before December 31 are tax deductible for the tax year in which your gift is made. If you itemize your deductions, your gift will lessen your tax liability for the tax year in which your gift is made. If you have not itemized your deductions in past years, your Christmas gift may allow you to itemize and lower your tax bill (check with your tax advisor) . Consider the "Carry Over Deduction." Depending on your age, income and the size of your gift, you may be able to "carry over" your charitable gift tax deduction to subse-quent years.

METHODS OF GIVING Many different, exciting and thought provoking forms of Christmas and year end giving are available, all of which are tax deductible. GIVING SECURITIES . . . . . . is perhaps the best way to make a Catholic gift of faith. You can save and give at the same time! Stocks, bonds, and even shares in mutual funds that have appreciated can be given and your deduction is for the full market value at the time the gift is made - not just your original cost for the securities.

You can also save by paying no capital gains tax on the sale of the stock as you would if you sold the stock and held the cash. DEPRECIATED SECURITIES? You can sell stock that has declined in value and claim that loss on your tax return. Then, donate the cash from the sale of the stock and claim a charitable deduction on your tax return for the amount of the gift. A professional stock broker can assist you in making this type of gift. CASH - the most standard and familiar way to make a Christmas or year end gift. Simply write a check to make your gift. PROPERTY - both real estate and personal property qualify as charitable gifts that would benefit your parish through Christmas and year end giving. Consider real estate such as residences, land and buildings as well as antiques, jewelry, artwork, coin collections, or other collectibles. BUSINESS GIFTS - businesses can make gifts and receive tax deductions as well. Businesses can give gifts of inventory, equipment, materials and service as well as cash. If you own your own business, giving through your business is another way to benefit your parish and positively impact your taxes. LIFE INSURANCE - cash value in current or paid up life insurance policies can benefit St Anthony’s par-ish. Of course, naming our parish as a beneficiary of life in-surance proceeds (or a will) can be a wonderful means of making a future major gift. You may even designate policy dividends as gifts. MATCHING GIFTS If you are an employee or a participating retiree of a com-pany or corporation with a "matching gifts program," your gift may be matched if the gift is made to the St. Anthony’s Outreach. Check with your employer. (This information is not financial planning, legal or tax advice. Please see your tax advisor and financial planner when consid-ering significant gifts to St. Anthony of Padua Church.)

Did We Take a Step? Due to printers deadlines, we are unable to include last week’s collection. This information will be in next week’s bulletin.

Good stewards believe that God, who has begun this good work in them, will carry it through to completion. In words and deeds,

they can sing with the Psalmist, “The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy!”

Our next PBJ/Mission Gang will meet Saturday, January 26th in the lower church. Groups must e-mail RSVP if you would like to help us. Please arrive by 8:50am. We end

by 10:30. Join the dozens of wonderful people who attend each month to help feed the hungry. PBJ/Mission Sponsors: Joseph Ferrandina Donations in memory of Manny Bouzas,

Patricia Keetos and Gary Kaszubski. In memory of Fran Melvin by St. Anthony’s book

We rely on financial donations to sustain our ministry.

St. Anthony’s Peanut Butter & Jelly/Mission Gang

A lesson in faith by a teenager. Sophia Vaccarino, a PBJ Gang volunteer, decided that in place of having favors at her Sweet 16 birthday party, she wanted to use that money to donate to our Midnight Run to feed and clothe the homeless in New York City. In the card she sent me, she asked God to bless us in all that we do. What I’d like Sophia to know is that SHE is the blessing that God gave to us. She proved what Mother, now Saint Teresa of Calcutta proclaimed…there are no great things, only small things with great love. How I interpret the quote is…don’t try to do great things. Instead, DO small things with great love. For a 16-year-old to show such self-lessness in this day and age gives us hope for the future of our church. May God bless YOU, Sophia, in all that YOU do.

Birth day blessings for January children will be held on the 6th at 9 AM Family Mass. All the children born in January will be blessed and prayed over. They will be given a birthday gift. Come and celebrate it in the presence of God (church) and all other children and community of St. Anthony of Padua.

This is the last Sunday of the year 2018, we say ‘thank you’ to God and family for the blessings they gave to us and we invoke God’s blessings for the new year. We wish all the children and fami-lies Happy New Year.

This Sunday we celebrate the Holy Family of Jesus and Mary and Joseph. Jesus is in the temple (church) Today’s Bible story, we hear that Joseph and Mary have lost something very im-portant…their 12-year-old son, Jesus. They look for him for three days. They finally find him in the Temple, talking to the teachers. Jesus goes home with Mary and Joseph and is obedient to them. It is in the temple (church) you come closer

to God and to your family. The temple is a place to know about God. It is a place where we experience the divine presence. Let’s become a church-attending and church-loving people. Pope Francis said “Fathers, mothers and children together go to the house of the Lord, in order to sanctify the holy day with prayer, how important it is for our families to journey together to-wards a single goal!” Home is a domestic church where the children are formed. Jesus, bless our home with your divine presence, Amen.

The Family that prays together, Stays together!

“Feed My Lambs” is the weekly request of the SVDP society to parishioners to bring to Church the one or two items that the Food Pantry is in low supply of. This week’s items are: Hot Chocolate, tea, coffee, chunky soups, cereal, Chef Boy-ar-dee canned pasta, and jarred pasta sauce. Of course any other items you wish to donate will be gratefully accepted, but the item that we are concentrating on will help us ensure that this item will be in supply for our clients. Dress a Girl Around the World

DRESS-A-GIRL NEEDS YOU! Come join us as we sew dresses for underprivileged girls around the world. Bring your sewing machine and a friend. Instructions and all materials provided. Hand sewers, ironers, cutters are also needed. We welcome anyone with a desire to help and to be part of a loving and friendly community.

COME PRAY WITH US AS WE ASK THE FAVOR OF God through the intercession of St. Monica! (the 1st and 4th Wednesday of each month) at St. Anthony’s at 7:45 AM

We will pray especially for our children, grandchil-dren and families during these challenging times. St. Monica prayed many years for the conversion of her son, Augustine, who later became a saint and doctor of the church. She is the patron saint of mothers, widows, wives, marriage, disappointing children, alcoholics, vic-tims of unfaithfulness or abuse, and conversion. Cure' of Ars (Merrick) parishioners have experienced many graces and miracles after asking St. Monica’s intercession for their fami-lies. They have shared their booklet filled with powerful prayers for use in our group. We hope you will join us! For more information, please call or text Bogna at (631) 404-0960.
