St. Anthony DePaul Society St. Anthony Conference

Dear Friends, As we enter our tenth year of service as the St. Anthony Conference of the Society

of St. Vincent de Paul, we want to express our sincere thanks for the generosity you have shown to the poor though your donations of food, money, time and support. In this past fiscal year we have helped an average of 45 local families representing 150 individuals, at our monthly Food Pantry with food, utility payments and other monetary support. We purchased holiday dinners at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter and hosted the always well-attended family Christmas party. We strived to be a caring presence in the often chaotic lives of these families. We organized the Giving Trees at Christmas and Easter, providing over 800 individuals with gifts and baskets, as we worked through several local agencies. We arranged for two Clothing Drives this year, which helped stock the thrift stores operated by our Joliet Council and provided back-to-school supplies for about 125 students. We were also able to help needy families at St. Lawrence O’Toole Parish in Matteson and Sacred Heart in Hopkins Park, as well as aiding SVDP’s Domestic Disaster Response fund. We were pleased to work with other parish groups such as the Knights of Columbus, the Religious Education Program and the CCW to enrich the giving spirit of our parish. We always welcome anyone who would like to take a more active role in our mission. Many local businesses and organizations also became our community partners in helping to serve the poor. They are listed below. I would like to personally recognize and thank the 40 plus Vincentian volunteers who give of themselves every week, all year long. Additionally, I would like to thank Fr. Smith for allowing SVDP to be here at St. Anthony and for making it easy to give to the Society by the use of the monthly envelopes. We thank you again for trusting us to do the work of Our Lord through the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. God Bless, Joey Buck President, St. Anthony Conference, SVDP

The Gospel predicts end times; our challenge though is to live faithfully now. When we live in conformity to the Word, hearing Jesus’ words and living them out, the future holds no fear for us.

As you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul poor box at the back of church, or in an envelope in the collection basket, know that you are hearing The words of Jesus and living them out. Thank you for your kind donations to our Food Pantry last weekend. Your gifts are appreciated by the 45 families we are assisting at this time. This weekend, we are collecting at Jewel Foods to provide turkey dinners to the families. If you need assistance or know someone needing assistance have them call the St. Vincent de Paul office at 815-469-3750 x114. The person needing the assistance must be the person calling if they wish to obtain help.

NOTE: At this time, we will be collecting any donated gift cards to local businesses to use as door prizes for the Christmas Party we hold for the families we aid. It is a big treat for these families to get restaurant gift cards or other stores to get something

they may not otherwise be able to purchase. You can put the gift cards in the St. Vincent DePaul donation envelopes or drop them in the poor box and mark for Christmas Party for families.

Catholic Campaign for Human Development Please be generous in this week’s collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. In the United States, one in seven people live in poverty. With this collection you support programs that address the causes of

poverty and provide a sustainable future for those who are struggling across the country. In addition, 25 percent of funds collected remains in our diocese to fund local anti-poverty projects. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this collection and work on the margins. More information can be found at www.usccb.org/cchd/collection.

In Gratitude Thank you, Father, for having created us and given us to each other in the human family. Thank you for being with us in all our joys and sorrows, for your comfort in our sadness, your companionship in our loneliness. Thank you for yesterday, today, tomorrow and for the whole o f our lives. Thank you for friends, for health and for grace. May we live this and every day conscious of all that has been given to us.

Are Christians obliged to become in-

volved in politics and society?

It is a special duty of the Christian laity

people to become involved in politics,

society, and commerce in the spirit of

the Gospel: in charity, truth, and justice.

Catholic social teaching offers them

clear guidance in this endeavor. Partisan

political activity is, however, incompati-

ble with the ministry of bishops, priests,

and religious, who must be of service to

everyone. (YOUCAT questions 439-440 )

Happy Thanksgiving!

We know that living here, one day

we might be wearing shorts and the

next day a winter coat. Our weather

here is always subject to change.

Jesus taught us about another

change that will happen one day in

our world. He taught us that one

day the world will come to an end.

Jesus taught us some signs that will

tell us the end time is near. We

don’t know when the things that

Jesus talks about will happen, but

we know that they will happen.

Jesus does not want us to be fright-

ened by these signs, nor does He

want us to be fearful about the fact

that the world will one day come to

an end. Many things in the world

may change, but Jesus’ words to us

and God’s love for us will never change.

Question for Children: If Jesus came to

visit you today, what would you do?

What would say? How would you act?

Question for Adults: If today was your

last day, what would you be most

thankful for? What would you regret?

ENCOURAGEMENT

This Sunday’s Gospel is our final selection from Mark

for this liturgical year. It is taken from the end of Jesus’

teaching in Jerusalem immediately preceding the ac-

count of his arrest and passion. In it Jesus gives his dis-

ciples hope to sustain them through his passion and

death and any persecution or suffering that they would

encounter after his resurrection.

The words from the book of Daniel also provided

hope and encouragement to the people of Daniel’s time.

The encouragement in these scriptures is meant for us as

well, for none of us will escape tribulation in our lives.

Followers of Jesus will be able to endure suffering with

joyful hope, knowing that Christ’s love will lead us

along the way of discipleship and give us eternal life

with God. ~Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

The Diocese of Joliet is participating in #GivingTuesday! If you have yet to donate to the 2018 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA), please mark your calendar for Tuesday, November 27. The 2018 CMAA goal of $8.2 million is within reach — but we need the help of everyone in the diocese. Every gift, no matter the size, is greatly appreciated and will help support 30 ministries that benefit every parish in the diocese, including ours. Remember, 70 percent of any amount we raise over our parish goal is returned to us for our use. This is a great opportunity for our parish. Our parish has now pledged $121,912 and $112,341 amount paid of our goal $106,700 for the 2018 CMAA. Thank you to everyone who has already pledged their gift to the 2018 CMAA, and for being a partner in caring to so many in our diocese. For more information about the CMAA before #GivingTuesday, please follow @DOJCMAA on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram or visit jolietdioceseappeal.org.

THE PROMISE: During the Thirty Years War the

deadly plague raged throughout Europe, until in

1633 it reached even the tiny Alpine Village of

Oberammergau. During the next six months, so

many villagers died of the Black Death, that the

townspeople took a solemn Vow — if God would

release them from the plague, they would perform

once every ten years the story of the Passion of

Christ. From the story of the Passion of Christ.

From the moment the Vow was taken, no one else

in the village succumbed to the plague and so the

first Passion Play was performed in 1634 and has

continued for over 380 years into a masterpiece of

theater and music, with all the villagers involved

either on stage or behind the scenes. The Play now

takes place once every ten years.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION November is a month of remembrance for the dead, and cemeteries have long been a focus for prayer. Our tradition holds great respect for bodily remains, since the body was created and redeemed by God, was once the “dwelling place of the Holy Spirit,” and has a destiny of life with God in glory.

The funeral practices of the early church contrasted greatly with those of the pagans, who had a great dread of the dead body. The ancient Christian funeral liturgy ended with the relatives and friends giving a final kiss to the body. It expressed affection and showed their faith that the grave would not be the last word. This kiss horrified pagans, who thought that any contact with the dead was degrading. Every year on their loved one’s “birthday to life,” the Christians would return to the place of their burial to mark their profound communion with those whose lives were hidden in Christ. Typically, they buried the dead with their faces turned toward the east, symbolizing the rising of the Sun of Justice, Christ, at the end of days. They were attracted to the catacombs or burial grounds just as we are today. They would often celebrate the Eucharist at the tomb. Before long, as soon as Christians were allowed to build places for worship, they relocated cemeteries from beyond the city walls to surround the church. This was not so much because the church made the ground holy, but because the bodies of the saints hallowed the ground on which the church was built, a subtle but beautiful difference.
