Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time FOOLISHNESS

Sometimes the idea of repentance seems old-fashioned, naïve,

even foolish. But if you’re looking for real foolishness, you’ll find it

in today’s readings.

We begin with Leviticus and the admonition, “Take no revenge

and cherish no grudge” (Leviticus 19:18). We’ve heard that mes-

sage before, of course, so we might forget how far it is from the so-

called “practical realities of life.” Saint Paul warns us about being

practical, though. Whoever considers oneself wise had better

“become a fool,” because “the wisdom of this world is foolishness

in the eyes of God” (1 Corinthians 3:18, 19).

This “foolishness” continues in the Gospel: “Offer no resistance

to one who is evil” (Matthew 5:39). In fact, offer the other cheek

when you’ve been slapped. Hand over your coat as well as your

shirt. Be like God, who sends sunshine and rain on the bad as well

as the good. “So be perfect,” says Jesus, “just as your heavenly Fa-

ther is perfect” (5:48). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

February 23, 2020

Seventh Sunday of Ordinary Time

Feast of St. Polycarp, Bishop and Martyr

Dear Brothers and Sisters of St. Anthony Catholic Church:

This year the priests of the Diocese of Amarillo requested for the United Catholic Appeal (UCA) pledge time to be

moved up in the year. They felt that waiting until May was not the best time for preparing, promoting, and pledging

for the UCA. Presbyteral Council decided that the Weekends for United Catholic Appeal promotion and pledging

should happen during first weeks of the Season of Lent. This will mean that the dates will vary from year to year,

but will be connected to the Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Here at St. Anthony’s we will have

our United Catholic Appeal pledge weekend March 7-8, 2020.

I would respectfully request that every parishioner participate as every parishioner directly benefits. Here are some

of the ways we at St. Anthony’s directly benefit from the UCA:

We have two men in formation for reception and ordination to the Permanent Diaconate, Ronnie Fetsch

and Gerald Marnell.

Our Catechists, Youth Leaders, and School Faculty have access to Continuing Education programs for

different forms of certification both on the Diocesan level and nationally recognized.

Our Bishop de Falco Retreat Center offers many different kinds of retreats for growth in the spiritual life

(ACTS, Cursillo, Kolbe), to promote healing and forgiveness (Retrouvaille for broken marriages, A

Touch of Mercy, for those broken by abortion), and comfort to the suffering and grieving (Beginnings,

for those who have lost a spouse, and Emmaus, for those who have lost a child). In addition days of re-

flection, spiritual direction and companionship, individual and group retreat opportunities.

Tribunal marriage assistance for those desiring to bless an existing union, to request an annulment for a

broken union, and all of the processes for those preparing for marriage.

Seminarian education and priestly formation for the health and formation of our current and future clergy.

Our parish quota is $56,418. I know that each of our financial and economic situations are different and can rapidly

change. Please spend some time in prayer asking God what He asks of you. Thank Him for your many blessings of

all kinds, and decide as a family on what our Good and Gracious God is asking as your response to His gifts of life

and love to you. I leave you with a prayer that you can use as a family as you enter into this time of discernment.

O Good and Gracious God, giver of life and source of freedom, we know that all we have received is a gift from

your hand. You call us to be good stewards of Your abundance. Help our family to always use Your gifts wisely

and teach us to share generously. Send the Holy Spirit to work through us, bringing Your message of life and love to

those we serve. May our faithful stewardship bear witness to the love of Jesus Christ in our lives. We pray with

grateful hearts, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

In Christ, I Remain,

Fr. Anthony C. Neusch
