In December of 1968
three o f our
astronauts were
scheduled to make
the first flight
around the moon.
The whole world
was watching. A few weeks before
blast-off the Federation of British
Astrologers made a gloomy
prophecy. They predicted that the
flight would be a failure. Why?
Because two planets, Jupiter and
Uranus, would be close together,
causing personality changes in the
astronauts. Despite the passage of
time and the knowledge that a
subsequent Apollo Mission actually
landed men on the moon, we can
surmise that the Apollo 8 Flight
was successful. The British
prophets of doom were wrong.
Another astrologer back at that
time predicted that the marriage of
the famous actress Zsa Zsa Gabor
and George Sanders would be a
long and happy one, as would the
marriage of Linda Christian and
actor, Tyrone Power, because of the
position of certain stars. Both
couples split up after a few years.
The list of mistakes by those who
maintain they can tell the future
by the stars is endless.
N ev er t h e l e ss , m i l l i o n s o f
Americans think their future is
written in the stars. Countless
FOLLOW ANY STAR
newspapers carry a daily horoscope
telling what good and evil will
befall people on certain days.
Here are some facts about this
senseless, harmful practice:
There is no scientific proof that
the stars affect our lives.
The predictions in our papers
are so general they could
apply to anyone. Every day,
Every individual experiences
some good, some evil, some
successes, some failures,
some gains, some losses.
Someone is making a lot of
money out of this trickery.
This past year, Americans
spent $200 million on this
nonsense.
If there is anything to it, why
don’t these readers of the
stars get into the stock
market or visit their
favorite casino and make a
killing?
Most people dabble in the stars
for the fun of it, but if
someone really takes it
seriously, that person is
b r e a k i n g t h e 1 s t
Commandment: You shall
not have false gods before
me.
But the Wise Men followed a star,
didn’t they? Yes. We believe that
God used some unusual light or
star to guide the Wise Men to the
m a n g e r i n B e t h l e h e m .
Furthermore, they were following
t h e p r o p h e c i e s o f G o d ’ s
messengers. These were valid and
true.
Often on this feast of the
Epiphany, we suggest that all of us
follow the star that led the Magi to
the Christ Child. Today I suggest
that we follow any star in the
heavens and it will lead to the crib
of Christ. Some starry night look
up into the heavens and pick out
one star, any star.
Who put that little diamond up
there in that blue velvet showcase?
We call Him God. God made those
billions of stars. God made the star
you chose to look at. God sent His
own Son to save all of us. May that
star you chose or any star lead
each of us to find God’s Son.
Finally, having been so led, to
respond to God’s gracious love for
us with the same generous love for
others.
God bless you.

Sharing the Gospel
When Jesus was born, angels sang.
I’ll bet you never thought stars
could sing for Jesus, too. But the
stars in the sky sang in their own
way, just by moving and twinkling
in the sky. The Savior was born.
Jesus was the King that God’s
people had been waiting for. Magi
who had been watching the sky
saw a star much brighter than the
rest. They followed that star until
they found Jesus, and they
worshipped their new king.
Prayer
Dear God, thank you for making
the stars move and twinkle in a
special way, so that the Magi could
find Jesus.

Dipping in the Well
Magi, Three Kings, Three Wise Men…who were they?
We sing songs, give gifts, and move three mysterious men into our manger scenes. There’s a rich
heritage in the Catholic Church of celebrating the magi, but their origins are steeped in mystery.
The original Greek calls these men magoi. The word is translated elsewhere in Scripture to mean
“magician,” but a similar word was used in ancient history to describe an entirely different set of
people altogether. In what is now modern-day Iran, the ruling empire had a wealthy priestly caste
known as the Magi. At the time of Christ, the Magi formed one of the ruling councils of the Parthian Empire. These
priests interpreted dreams and read the stars to anticipate major events that could affect the fortunes of the
empire.
We’re not exactly sure where the magi of the Gospels traveled from. Matthew simply says “the east.” History tells
us that the ancient regions of Persia, Assyria, and Babylon all had a magi priesthood at the time of Christ.
Whichever region they hailed from, they likely traveled over one thousand miles over the course of several months
to arrive at the Holy Family. Unfortunately for the classic song, there is no concrete evidence these men were
themselves kings, though they did bear gifts “from afar” at the prompting of their astronomical calculations.

Today the Early Childhood Program returns from Christmas break and
tomorrow Faith Formation starts back up. Welcome back!
Next week, we begin Ordinary Time with the Baptism of the Lord. The Gospel reading
will be Matthew 3:13-17:
Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by
him. John tried to prevent him, saying, “I need to be baptized by
you, and yet you are coming to me?” Jesus said to him in reply, “Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all
righteousness.” Then he allowed him. After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened
for him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and
coming upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
This week share memories of your family members about their Baptisms.
Discuss what it means to be a child of God.
On the way to Mass next week, discuss whether or not you see yourself as
a beloved child of God. We all are!
After hearing the Gospel at Mass discuss what you can learn about the life
of the Trinity from the baptism of Jesus.
Have a blessed week!
