READINGS FOR THE WEEK

Scriptural Reflections on Stewardship

Abram places trust in God’s promise of making his name and descendants great on the earth.

In Jesus’ transfigured glory is revealed that life and im-mortality will rob death of its power. “Lord, it is good that we are here.” - Matthew 17:4 In today’s Gospel we see Jesus take Peter, James and John to a mountain top and reveal to them His divine glory. Peter responded enthusiastically, “Lord, it is good that we are here.” Do we feel the same way each week when we come to Mass? Are we in awe of the wonder of our God? Are we grateful for the opportunity to spend time with God? Do we feel St. Peter’s enthusiasm? It is good that we are here!

Every Tuesday, the Blessed Sacrament is exposed in

the church from 3 to 4 p.m. It is an hour of prayer for the priests, religious men and women and an increase of vocations to the priesthood and the religious life of the Church. We invite you to come and spend time with the Lord for these intentions and for your personal requests. Holy Hour closes with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

This year’s Legacy Society prayer service and reception will be held on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at 2:00 PM at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. A reception hosted by Archbishop John J. Myers will take place immediately following the prayer service. Anyone who has named their parish, an Archdiocesan school or ministry of the Church in their Will/estate plans is eligible for membership in the Legacy Society. If you already have named your parish in your will, or are considering doing so, please contact Anne DeVivo DeMesa at (973) 497-4048 or e-mail to [email protected], so that she can tell you about the benefits of membership and welcome you to attend this year’s event. “Quick Journey” Bible Study Course

If you have ever wanted to read the Bible, but did not know where or how to begin, then A Quick Journey Through The Bible Parish Study is for you. A Quick Journey Through The Bible makes reading the Bible not only easy, but exciting. In this study, you will learn the major people, places, events and themes of the Bible—getting the “big picture” of salvation history. This then makes your Bible reading and even the Sunday mass readings come alive like never before. A Quick Journey Through The Bible will be offered at six Parishes in the Archdiocese of Newark starting late March, 2011. For more information contact the Office for Evangelization at [email protected]; 973 497-4353; www.rcan.org/evangelization.

Gracias…

Questions and Answers on the Mass Changes March 20, 2011 - Part 3 of 7

On November 27, 2011, the English speaking Church in the USA will begin using a new translation of the prayers used at Mass (The Roman Missal). A series of Questions and Answers on this topic will be posted here to help explain the thinking behind these changes. Please check back weekly.

3. What’s new or different about the revised translation? The style of the translation of the third edition is different. In accord with the rules for translation es-

tablished by the Holy See, the revised translation follows the style of the original Latin texts more closely, in-cluding concrete images, repetition, parallelisms, and rhythm. The English used in the Mass texts is more for-mal and dignified in style. Where possible, the texts follow the language of Scripture and include many poetic images. In addition, the third edition contains prayers for the celebration of recently canonized saints, additional pref-aces for the Eucharistic Prayers, additional Masses and prayers for various needs and intentions, and some up-dated and revised rubrics (or instructions) for the celebration of the Mass.

Evangelization Corner…… Reflecting On The Gospel - Today’s Gospel reading is often referred to as the Transfiguration. A transfiguration is like an extreme makeover. Something is changed and is made to be significantly different. The Transfiguration is the event in the life of Jesus - atop a mountain with his apostles Peter, James and John - when he is significantly changed. His face “shone like the sun and his clothes be-came white as light”.

The Gospel says that the Apostles are very much afraid. We can understand this. Change sometimes is frightening, especially when a person changes. For example, when we act and look like what people expect, they are comfortable around us. But when we change, they don’t know what to expect, they can become frightened.

As faith grows deeper and stronger during Lent, there may be times when your family and friends react to you like the Apostles reacted at the Transfiguration.

Sharing Ideas - Talk about a time when a friend changed significantly. How did the change reflect your relationship? Did the change in your relationship affect your other relationships as well?
