ST. ANNE’S HILL- CELEBRATING 35 YEARS NOVEMBER 2009 PAGE 1 We've set the route for the tour! If your house is on one of these streets your decorations will be on display for our guests in December, whether you're on the tour or not! Please take a look at the affected streets and then a look at your sidewalks. If you have encroaching shrubs or low hanging limbs that make it hard to pass, please trim them back. If it snows, we'll have people out shoveling and salting the walks, but your help in keeping your section of walkway clear will be greatly appreciated. Streets on notice for tour traffic: Fifth St., from Keowee to Henry (gateway, we expect incoming and out going auto traffic, we'll be walking the south side between LaBelle & Henry) High St., from Fifth to McLain (both sides will be traveled) McLain St., from Potomac to LaBelle (south side from High to LaBelle, both sides between High and Potomac) LaBelle St., from McLain to Fifth (east side) Henry St., from Fifth to Fourth, (west side) Fourth St., from Henry to Dutoit (south side) Dutoit St., from Fifth to the Bossler Mansion (both sides) In addition, the tour committee is working in cooperation with the Dayton Police Department to restrict parking along the west side of Henry St., from Fifth St. north to about the middle of the block. This is to alleviate the problems with the buckled and crumbled sidewalks along that section which pose a hazard for our guests. This restriction will be in place only for the weekend of the tour, and only during tour hours, but its important that all neighbors along that section comply with the ban. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Please work with your neighbors to accommodate those affected. If you have a garage or other off-street parking available to you, please use it to make room for those who will need to find alternate parking during this time. And spread the word to those neighbors who may not have heard! Thank you to everyone. It takes so many people to put this tour together, no job is too big or too small. Every effort is appreciated. Top 10 Things I Will Miss about St. Anne’s Hill

With our upcoming departure I thought I would share some of the things I will miss about St. Anne’s Hill.

10 Lee Smithson’s bread pudding served during the best Christmas tour in Dayton9 The spontaneous conversations with neighbors while taking a walk8 Painting our house7 The view from Steve and Charlene’s porch as the sun is setting with cocktails in hand6 Fred leaving Rebecca chocolates on those important holidays (Valentines and Sweetest Day)5 Our backyard4 Hulling around the PPD wagons/coolers3 Caring for Roma and Riley2 Peeking over the fence into Chris and Alan’s yard1 St. Anne’s Hill Family

Never take the neighborhood for granted. It is what it is because of the people that have come and gone and those that are still here. I hope everyone remembers me as being a good neighbor.

MIRACLE ON MCCLURE STREET HEATHER KARDEEN

We’re getting into that time of year where everyone begins to think about what they’re thankful for. Most people are thankful for health, family or friends. I am no exception. Most people in St. Anne’s Hill know my son, Parker. He has been going to the monthly neighborhood meetings since he was three months old. His little blondish-red curly hair can usually be seen bouncing around the Liederkranz playing with Maggie (Jim’s dog) at these monthly meetings. He can also be seen strolling around ‘The Hill” in his stroller, swinging on the swings at Bomberger Park, or at PPDs, neighborhood socials, and New York Pizzeria on Wednesday nights. Parker will be two-years-old on November 23rd. Parker was born at Kettering Hospital the day after Thanksgiving in 2007. He was taken by emergency c-section in which I was completely put under. Parker was a stillborn. When I woke up my sister, dad, and Steve were standing around my bed crying. I did not take this as a good sign. My OB and the Neonatal surgeon appeared and told me they didn’t think Parker was going to make it. I could not believe what I was hearing. I had had a perfectly healthy pregnancy with no complications. What happened?!? Parker lost 70% of his blood during birth. To save his brain and heart his body shut down his liver, spleen, and kidneys first. His

Apgar score was taken at one minute, five minutes, and ten minutes after he was born. For minutes one and five he scored a 0 (blue all over, heart rate absent, no response to stimulation, no movement, and no breathing). At ten minutes he scored a 1 (blue at extremities, pulse rate less than 100, and slow/weak or irregular breathing). I was told if I could get out of bed I could go see him. I was wheeled in to see him in another room. There were tubes coming out of everywhere. I was allowed to stay with him and hold his hand through the incubator for about 10 minutes. Then I was wheeled back to my room so Parker could receive a blood transfusion. Later that afternoon the transport crew wheeled Parker in to see me before they took him to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Miami Valley Hospital. Again, I was allowed to hold his hand through the incubator for about 10 minutes and then he was gone.

I stayed at Kettering Hospital for three days while Parker was in the NICU at Miami Valley. That first night Steve was taken into the consultation room by the NeoNatal surgeon and was told chances were Parker was not going to make it through the night. Fortunately, he did. However, at 36-hours-old Parker had a seizure due to lack of potassium. The day I was released from Kettering Hospital Steve drove me to the NICU. I closed my eyes the whole way. It had been three days since I had seen Parker and I did not know which baby he was amongst the sea of incubators. When I was finally directed to his incubator I saw him and cried and cried and cried. Parker had tubes coming out of everywhere. He was on a breathing tube, IV, feeding tube, and had needles in his arms, feet, and head. He was still covered in blood because he was too fragile to get a bath. While I was sitting with him a cardiologist came over. In addition to everything that was already wrong Parker had two holes in his heart, ASD & VSD. Steve and I were able to hold Parker for the first time about 10 days after he was born. However, his kidneys, liver, and spleen were still not working, his blood was not clotting, and he was not gaining any weight. And, he was in need of another blood transfusion. To make matters more complicated someone put in a bid on the house we had been trying to sell for over a year and a half. While I stayed in the NICU with Parker, Steve and my sister went house hunting. Our buyer wanted us out in less than a month. After looking at around 20 houses Steve said the house at 155 McClure Street kept calling our name. Steve had been through the house two years prior when we first starting talking about putting our house up for sale. Luckily for us it was still on the market and we put in a bid on 155 McClure, a house I had never stepped foot into. Yes, I trust Steve that much!

Continued from previous page...

We closed on 155 McClure Street while Parker was in the NICU and we were set to move in on December 22nd. Parker’s doctors (11 specialists) agreed that Parker could come home on December 22nd, but when they found out we were moving that day they pushed his homecoming to December 23rd, 31 days after he was born. On December 21st Steve and I received the keys to our new home in St. Anne’s Hill. We were met at our new home by Pat & Jim Deweese who introduced us to Ken & Mumsie Wheeler. We were taken in the DeWeese’s car to a house on Henry Street. At this house, Camp Mumsie, the Wheelers told us we would stay there with Parker until all our boxes were unpacked and the dust had settled in our new home. Our first encounter with St. Anne’s Hill neighbors was the Wheelers welcoming perfect strangers, us, into their home. Parker came home to Camp Mumsie on December 23rd. But, unfortunately on December 31st Parker ended up at Children’s Hospital for five days for another blood transfusion among other complications. We finally welcomed him home to St. Anne’s Hill the first week of January 2008. During our first year on “The Hill” we were weighed down with doctor’s appointments almost every day, physical therapy, visits to the house by nurses, and special classes for Parker every Thursday. Happily, around his first birthday Parker was released from almost every specialist he had.

For me this time of year is a time to really think about what’s important in my life and what I’m really thankful for. I am thankful we found a home in St. Anne’s Hill with its amazing neighbors. I am thankful for my family, friends, and St. Anne’s Hill neighbors who provided Steve and me with food, housing, and support when Parker was born. I am thankful for all the doctors and specialists who worked with Parker; especially the Neonatal Surgeon, Dr. Peppard. If he hadn’t been at Kettering Hospital that morning (He said he was only there that morning because they had better coffee than Good Sam.) Parker would not have survived. But most of all I am thankful for Parker.

Parker still has the two holes in his heart and still sees the cardiologist, gastroenterologist, nephrologist, and takes classes on Thursdays. By looking at Parker you would never know of his traumatic beginning or know how “sick” he is on the inside. I love him so much and can not believe he will be two in November. To me he is perfect and I couldn’t have asked for anything more.

DUBLIN PUB OUTING A GRAND TIME!

Thanks to everyone that came out last month to the Dublin Pub. Everyone had a great time. Remember, the Dublin Pub offers St. Anne’s Hill residents 20% off food purchases on Monday and Tuesday!

If you aren't familiar with The Gift Shop, it is located on the second floor of the Bossler Mansion on Dutoit during the Christmas Tour and features handmade, quality items from St. Anne's Hill neighbors and their friends and family. The Gift Shoppe is the very last stop on the Tour and caps off the wonderful experience of our guests as they wind down their evening with us and look for gifts for themselves, family and friends. This year's Tour will also feature a raffle which will bring in additional guests to the Shop, an even better opportunity for your talents to be seen and sold. Sound interesting? I hope so because we need you!

You don't have to have a lot of items nor do your items have to be Christmas themed. You also do not need to be at the Gift Shoppe all weekend as the store will be staffed by volunteers. The only things we ask are that the items are handmade (personalizing or embellishing existing items is fine) and that they be high quality as our visitors will be taking home a piece of the 'Hill. And lastly, because this is a nonprofit fund raising event, the neighborhood asks for a 25% donation from your total sales during that weekend to support St. Anne's Hill. (You will price your own items and the 25% will be deducted from your total weekend sales).

The Christmas Tour is December 11, 12 & 13, 2009 and the Gift Shoppe will be open during Tour hours. We will accept cash, checks and credit cards. All handmade items from neighbors will be accepted for sale as well as those of family and friends.

If you would like to participate and/or would like additional information, please call or email me. Thanks so much and I hope to hear from you!
