FROM THE PASTOR
Each year you give us this joyful season when we prepare to celebrate the paschal mystery
with mind and heart renewed…. As we recall the great events
that gave us new life in Christ, You bring the image of your Son
to perfection within us. (Preface #1 for Lent)
I think there is something off (“fishy”) about the fish symbol on many Catholic calendars on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent. Lent is not about eating fish (formerly a food of the poor). Lent is about those who have the regular option of eating “high on the hog” choosing to abstain from eating meat so that in their bodies and in their bellies
they may experience one day a week during Lent what most of the people on earth experience most days of their lives. This experience of abstaining from meat is meant to: 1) raise our consciousness; 2) promote human solidarity; 3) provide material help to those in need; 4) to name, face and change social structures and economic arrangements that exclude billions of our brothers and sisters.
PRAY, FAST, LEARN, GIVE – In Iraq, we encounter Majd and his family, people forced to flee violence, searching for stability. How are we called to welcome the stranger in our midst? How can you support those, worldwide, who are forced to flee their homes to find safety or better opportunities? Visit crsricebowl.org. CRS Rice Bowl materials are available in our worship sites. You may also download an app for CRS Rice Bowl. At the end of Lent, we ask you to convert your Rice Bowl donations into one check and place that check into the collection basket on Holy Thursday or on Easter Sunday.
SERVICE – We invite you to explore our recently updated Parish Ministry Opportunities booklet to discover the many opportunities to serve our neighbors both through the parish and also through the many other local human service agencies. Copies of our Ministry Opportunities booklet are available in each of our three worship sites as well as through our parish website.
CATHOLIC CHARITIES APPEAL – The 2018 Catholic Charities Appeal (CCA) officially begins today. Each registered household in our parish will receive a direct mailing from the CCA campaign but for more information now visit www.catholiccharitiesappeal.org or check our parish social media.

HELP CHILDREN UNWRAP
THE GIFT OF LENT
The Catholic practice of giving something up for
Lent – abstaining from a favorite food or activity
– develops self-control, serves as penance for
sin, and can lead to a greater appreciation of our
blessings. Even young children can benefit from a
Lenten sacrifice but choosing one that’s too hard
can turn Lent into a chore. Try these ideas to
help choose a rewarding sacrifice:
Give up something valuable. This can be
a favorite dessert, game, toy or activity.
Make it reasonable. The sacrifice should be
something specific and age appropriate so that
he/she will be able to see it through.
Add back. An alternative to giving something
up is to add instead: more prayer, an extra
chore, a daily devotion such as the Rosary.
Give up luxuries. Consider encouraging your
youngster to pick something that may not be
good for him/her anyway. For example, sweets,
soft drinks, or television watching during the
week, make healthy choices for Lenten
abstinence. He/she may even decide to do
without it when Lent is over.
PARENT’S CORNER
February 21 – St. Peter Damian (1072).
Childhood deprivation may have created a desire
for an austere life. St. Peter Damian became a
disciplined monk but was called to service as a
bishop for many years and served as advisor to
seven popes. He retired to monastic life and died
in the care of his brother monks.
February 22 - St. Peter’s Chair.
Marking St. Peter’s establishment of the Holy See,
today we thank God for his Church and pray for
its preservation.

FLOCKNOTE - We love having you as part of our flock! Let’s keep in touch! Get important updates via email & text. There are two ways to connect:
1) Visit our church at: flocknote.com/StAnnPhx 2) Text Stannphx to 84576 from your phone to subscribe to updates.
Text STOP to 84576 to stop txt notifications at any time. Text HELP for help. There is no charge for this service, but your carrier message and data rates may apply. View privacy policy & conditions at www.flocknote.com/txt.
Do your children use personal technology in school? Our
Fifth through Eighth Grades enjoy one-to-one technology
with the use of personal iPads. There is also a set of
classroom iPads that rotates through Grades K-4, which
gives all of our students exposure to over 40
educational applications. These “apps” cross
all content areas and academic disciplines!
The use of such technology enables our
students to receive instant feedback from their
teachers, maintain and organize class
material, and addresses the need for
differentiation in instructional methods. As more high
schools move in this direction, the students of Holy Family
School are ahead of the curve upon entering freshman
year! Registration for the 2018-2019 school year is now
open. For more information or a personal tour of our Blue
Ribbon School, please contact us at
