His invigorating and energetic style of leadership quickly won the respect of both boys and staff. Mr Edey is an engaging man with an approachable manner and a warm sense of humour. His high expectations and commitment to solid values add to College’s already existing sense of pride and tradition. Mr Edey was most recently Director of Executive Education at the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS), and previous to that position, was Headmaster at Message from the Headmaster I t is an enormous honour to have been appointed as the 18th Headmaster of St Andrew’s College. It is many years since I was in Grahamstown and whilst not much has changed in the town, there have been signicant changes at College. The most exciting of these changes is the co-instruction and sharing with the DSG. This has brought a completely different dimension to teaching and learning in the senior school and it is a unique selling point for both schools. I think St Andrew’s is a far happier place than it was thirty-ve years ago and the boys come across as condent, articulate and engaging. One of the great joys of the school and the Eastern Cape is a complete lack of pretension. It is pleasing to note that the boys are not arrogant and that the school retains its strong Eastern Cape avour. There are many more activities and sports on offer and the school is very busy. Perhaps we have lost a certain formality which can lead to sloppiness, so it is important that we continue to place an emphasis on manners and dress in a world which does not regard these things as important any longer. Grahamstown remains a wonderful place for young men and women in which to grow up, and one of the great benets coming from Johannesburg, is to see how College remains open to the town and the public. The rst term has passed in a bit of a whirl and I look forward to engaging with the staff and the boys more fully as the year progresses. May I take this opportunity to wish you all a very blessed Easter and a wonderful and relaxing holiday together with your boys. May it be a time of enrichment and rejuvenation. I look forward to the energetic return of the boys at the start of the Trinity Term. l To Page 2 Mr Paul Edey, Headmaster of St Andrew’s College

David Wylde Leadership IndabaT he DB Wylde Leadership Indaba is an exciting project

that started last year, initiated by Old Andreans whofelt they would like to share practical and personal experi-ence in leadership with the boys at College and the girls

at DSG.The rst Indaba was held last year, Philip Womersley(Graham, 1968) and Myles Ruck (Armstrong, 1972) did a“double bill” and spent a day at College talking about their lives and leadership in business.

This term Hamilton (Tony) Wende (Armstrong 1979)was the guest for the DB Wylde Leadership Indaba on17th and 18th February 2009.

Tony is a novelist, freelance writer and television producer. He has covered twenty different wars andcon icts in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

In television he has worked for a number of internationalnetworks including CNN, BBC Panorama, Newsnight,

10 O’ Clock News, NBC, ABC (Australia) ForeignCorrespondent, Lateline, NHK Japan, SBS Australia, ZDFand ARD Germany, Reuters TV, APTN, ITN, Al JazeeraEnglish.

He is a regular contributor to From Our OwnCorrespondent on Radio 4 on the BBC. He has alsocontributed to the BBC World Service programme Letter. His articles have appeared in many international and SouthAfrican newspapers and magazines, including NationalGeographic Traveler, The Chicago Tribune, GQ, Maclean’sMagazine in Canada, TravelAfrica in the UK, The NewZealand Herald, The Buffalo News in the US, The SundayTimes, Business Day, The Sunday Independent, Maverick in Johannesburg and many others.

Tony’s has written 6 novels, the latest, The House of War, being a novel about the search for a lost city of Alexander

the Great in present-day Afghanistan, is to be published byPenguin (SA) in September 2009.

His previous books include: The King’s Shilling (Anovel about WWI in East Africa); Deadlines From the Edge

(Non- ction account of working as a television journalistin Africa, Afghanistan and the Middle East); True North:African Roads Less Travelled (an account of working as a

journalist & TV producer in Africa); Msimangu’s Words (anovel for young adults; co-written with Windell Williams);and The Quagga’s Secret (a children’s picture book)

The stories and experiences that Tony shared with uswere both riveting and inspiring. Particularly chilling washis award-winning documentary for BBC on the RwandanGenocide. He spent two days with various classesdiscussing the ethics of journalism, the history behind

many of the con icts, particularly in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the “Leadership of Ideas”. He gave a mesmerizingaddress to the boys and staff at assembly which can beread in full on the OA webpage (www.oldandrean.co.za).

Tony was interviewed by Ross Thompson and AbbyRobertson in front of a packed audience at the Highlander, who were also invited to ask him questions about his lifeand work.

The interview format is brilliant – the emphasis beingon what the listeners wanted to learn from the guest, rather than an address from the guest.

It is becoming a highly anticipated aspect of the programme of Leadership Education at the schools.

We aim to hold Indaba’s at least once a term.

At the DB Wylde Leadership Indaba 2008 were fromthe left: Myles Ruck, David Wylde, Philip Womersley,

Cameron MacKenzie, Ashleigh van der Hoven andNandile Tabata.

The DB Wylde Leadership Indaba was held at TheHighlander in February this year and from the left

are: Paul Edey, Tony Wende, Abby Robertson,Ross Thompson and Tim Nuttall.

Grade 11 History with a differenceMs Middlebrook’s Grade 11 History class asked (and answered) the question: What crises did capitalismface in the 1920s and 30s? It was, of course, interesting to link these events to the current global economiccrisis. At the end of the section, the learners attended a ‘1920s Roaring Twenties’ party at the Savoy Hotel in

London (DSG library). They chose and researched a character from the 1920s, dressed up as this characterand explained to the party guests why each of them had been invited to this prestigious party!! One of the pre-requisites for attending the party was the ability to know how to dance the charleston! The learners enjoyedchampagne from chrystal glasses (sprite and paper cups!), strawberries and cucumber sandwiches (greenstrips of sweets and marie biscuits!). As you can see in the photograph, they all looked gorgeous!!

The Design and Technology Centre, at St Andrew’s College, is widely recognisedas one of the nest in the Southern Hemisphere. In a sense it is the intellectualnerve-centre of the school and activities conducted in the Centre are focusedon cross-curricular work and creative thinking. The 2009 Grade 8 class’s rst

project was to make a new product that could be sold in real shops (not at schoolfêtes or craft markets). The product was to be made out of 2 litre milk bottles.

Dane van Heteren made an impressive canoe. The course followed consists of eight lessons on Design and Technology and the Environment and the canoewas the product made by a happy boy exploring the edge of creativity.

Community Engagement - Term 1T his has been a very busy start to the year and it has been wonderful to see how many more College boys

are participating in the service programmes. This term we have visited the SPCA twice, cleaned out Kowie Ditch twice, started work on an organic

vegetable garden, cleaned up litter from the streets surrounding the school and hosted another successfulseven-a-side soccer tournament for 60 children.

Michael Vos cleaning out at the SPCA. Ian Fraser-Jones with his soccer team. Cricket during Tuesday clubs.

St Matthew’s School is an important partner and in an exciting project, the College IT team is helpingdevelop the IT facilities at the school with funding from the Calabar Foundation. The Librarian and librarymonitors spent a day visiting the libraries at Prep, College and DSG.

The Learner’s Enrichment and Advancement programme where we invite 45 learners from three partnerschools in East Grahamstown to participate in extra Maths and English lessons on a Saturday morning is alsogoing well thanks to the commitment of several College staff who do all the teaching.

Basketball, computers and a visit to the Library during Tuesday clubs.

Debating updateW e began the year with a demonstration debate, a Sunday’s adjudication

workshop and a Grade 8 training day - all of which went off smoothlyand were enthusiastically received. A combined SAC/DSG Internal DebatingLeague has been going on throughout the term and is now coming to a close. This gave all those keen to debate socially a platform to do so and was certainly

enjoyed by all participants. The Grahamstown Debating League (run by Rhodesstudents) now heads into week three and so far College teams have won all their debates. We attended the Alex Road Debate Fest and enjoyed a successful dayof debating (both teams won their xtures against Riebeek, Muir, Queens andCollegiate). Weekly ‘squad’ sessions take place for the coaching and trainingof debaters in Grades 9 - 11, while the Grade 8s are taken separately - both

programmes are progressing well with talent in abundance.Dexter Munnik has left for New York where he will be representing SA at a

Model United Nations event. This follows on the heels of Andrew de Blocq’shonour of being called upon to represent SA at a G20 scholars’ climate changeconference in Scotland (as a result of his performance at a national debating

event last year). Eight Grade 12 College boys head to Ireland at the end of term(for the St Andrew’s 22nd International Model United Nations Competition)and have spent many hours doing research and preparing intensively. Whilethere is still plenty to do, the team is looking promising.

Free the Bears and Wildlife at Risk are dedicated to ending the biletrade in Vietnam and developing sanctuaries for rescued Asiaticblack bears and sun bears. Benoit

The 1st Team achieved an exceptional 31 wins outof 35 matches, the best performance by a College 1stTeam in recent memory, and they won silver medalsat both the Grey Bloem and Vides tournaments. Aftertheir ne performance at the KES tournament, weare now unof cially ranked among the top 5 waterpolo schools in the country.

The 2nd Team’s 17 wins and a draw out of 28 gamesis all the more impressive when one considers that 23
