    Yes, the roof is

    paid off, so

    we'll be

    burning the

    mortgage!

I was recently reading a magazine from an institution of higher learning (OK, I may have heard some of you thinking, “David...higher learning...really?),

and I was struck by the “testimonials” of present and former students. I wasn’t struck so much with the power of their testimonies, as I was by just how familiar those testimonials sounded – people seeking God’s leadership, finding a welcoming community, growing in their relationship with God.

As much as things have changed since I entered the doors of higher learning some 41 years ago, much remains the same. Humanity seeks relationships that lead to personal growth. Even those of us inclined to being ‘Lone Rangers’ must often live out our ‘Hi Ho, Silver and Away’ in the context of community. So what does all this mean?

People will find their places of meaning, and those places will most often be where opportunities for relationships and growth are available. Ours is not the task of deciding who needs – or is better suited – to find community and growth here. The task before us is to give everyone – regardless of status – the opportunity to be in relationship with us and to have processes in place for personal growth. At the end of the day, people matter. May the call of Jesus Christ on our lives build an even bigger desire to open up to new relationships and to new ways of growing in God’s grace.

    Christian Sympathy Extended

We’ll be viewing I Can Only Imagine on Sunday, August 12, 2018 at 5 PM. The inspiring and unknown true story behind MercyMe’s beloved, chart topping song that brings ultimate hope to so many is a gripping reminder of the power of true forgiveness. Starring J. Michael Finlay, Cloris Leachman, and Dennis Quaid, this recent release chronicles the life of Bart Millard.

Please plan on joining us and bring snacks to share.

    Movie Night

You did a fabulous job of bringing items in June and July for the food pantry box. Those are slim months for donations for the food pantry, and we managed to get them 82 additional items.

For August, the focus is canned carrots. Think of all the eyesight that you’ll be preserving!

If you have some aversion to the small orange root, you can also bring hamburger helper. The pantry always needs canned vegetables, but Mildred said they sometimes run low on hamburger helper. The stock of it is dismal right now, so if you’d like to bring a can of carrots and a box of hamburger helper, we certainly won’t stop you.

    Food Pantry Needs

The green forms in the pews are being turned in by several of you. Thank you! That makes it much easier to report the number of people who are engaged in missions and outreach each week. A couple of items to note:

The Mid East Area Agency on Aging has recently changed its name to Aging Ahead. To prevent waste, we’ll continue to use the forms we currently have but will update that for future green forms that are printed.

Ask questions. If you are uncertain about anything on the form, please ask. We want you to be comfortable using the forms.

Festival of Sharing is going through some changes this year, and the set-up for giving is a little different. However, the needs still exist, and this year, we’ll be focusing on the Missouri Student Dental Pack for our Festival of Sharing drive. The goal this year is 3,535 dental packs, which is 613 more than the number collected last year. Each dental pack contains 4 child-sized soft toothbrushes, 2 adult soft toothbrushes, 1 tube of fluoride toothpaste (at least 6 ounces), and a packet of dental floss. The toothbrushes need to be in their original packaging…because, let’s face it, no one wants a toothbrush of questionable origin.

A place will be set up at the back of the Sanctuary to begin collecting these items later in August. For now, start looking through that drawer in the bathroom where you throw those free toothbrushes and floss that the dentist gives you.

The swing and glider that we donated to Pony Bird will be dedicated on Tuesday, July 31st at 6:30 PM. The swing is in an idyllic location under some trees and the glider has a place of prominence overlooking the pond. The short dedication ceremony will be followed by refreshments, tours of the facility, and visiting with the Drury Home residents. Please make plans to attend if you are able.

Location: 1525 Villa Drive | De Soto, Missouri

Welcoming New Members We have added several new members over the past months, and now we’d like to take the opportunity to officially announce them and give you the chance to welcome them.

    Danielle Moskop

    Barbara Duncan

    Helen Axley

    Robert Nichols

It is exciting to welcome new members to our tribe, so if you need an address to send a card, flowers, or chocolates, please contact the church office. In lieu of flowers, offer to meet for coffee or lunch. Please make certain to make these new members feel very welcome by including them in our ministries and groups, encouraging them, and including them in your prayers.
