Prayers for the ChurchAnglican Church in North America: Bishop Alberto Morales and the clergy, religious, and laity of the Diocese of Quincy.

The Diocese of Illinois was formed in 1835 with Bishop Philander Chase, formerly of Ohio, as the first bishop. On Oct. 11, 1877, at the General Convention of the Episcopal Church in Boston, the Diocese of Illinois was divided into three dioceses. Two were named after their cathedral cities: Quincy (the Cathedral was later moved to Peoria) and Springfield, while the third continued to be named the Diocese of Illinois. It was renamed the Diocese of Chicago some years later.

At the Diocesan Synod in 2008, the diocese voted to move within the Anglican Communion from the province of the Episcopal Church to the province of the Southern Cone, a temporary move until the new province of the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) was established. The Diocese of Quincy was one of the founding dioceses of the ACNA in 2009.

The Diocese of Quincy is a diocese on the move. From 2010 to 2013, the diocese doubled in size. Then in late 2013, 17 more congregations were added. The Diocesan website states: “We’re found celebrating mass in beautiful chapels from the 1800s, and we’re found developing core church planting teams in rented theaters. We’re communities of the Karen people of Myanmar organized as house churches in the USA, and we’re a neighborhood congregation meeting under a large tent on the dusty northern outskirts of Mexico City. We’re from generations of Anglican families, and we’re “first generation” Anglicans growing deeper through the rich traditions of the church. We’re catholic, we’re evangelical, we’re missional, and we’re charismatic all at the same time, because the faith handed down to us is all of those things.”

Parish mourns loss of Linda SmithWe’re sad to share with you news of the death on Tuesday, Dec. 4, of St. Andrew's parishioner Linda Smith, wife of Randy Smith.

Linda was an active member of our parish, participating in Bible study and fellowship activities, and the Sacred Grounds Kitchen Ministry. She was instrumental in introducing the Vendors Market, which she coordinated for several years, to our annual Harvest Festival, and was a dedicated volunteer at the Festival, as well as at our annual rummage sales. She also shared her skill and passion for making handmade greeting cards by leading card-making classes at St. Andrew's.

Please keep Randy, as well as Linda's daughter Debbie Smith, in your prayers as they mourn the loss of their beloved wife and mother. And also pray for Linda as she enters her new life in the nearer presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. May her soul and the souls of all the saints rest in God’s peace, and may light perpetual shine upon her.

A celebration of Linda's life will be held at St. Andrew's at a later date. You may share your condolences and memories of Linda with Randy at [email protected] or 740-417-5613.

Born in Puerto Rico, now Bishop Morales discerned a call to the priesthood early in life. He founded St. Benedict’s Abbey in 1985 as an ecumenical abbey after being ordained as an Episcopal priest. In 1996, St. Benedict’s Abbey accepted the invitation of the then-bishop of Quincy to move to Illinois. Abbot Fr. Morales was elected to succeed as bishop in 2010. He remains a monk and is Abbot Emeritus of St. Benedict’s.

The Diocese now has 34 congregations in Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Texas, Iowa, Nebraska, Mississippi, Hawaii, Colorado, Texas, and Florida. The diocese does not ordain women to the priesthood but does have women deacons. (Sources: Diocesan website; Wikipedia.)

Please pray especially for continued growth and disciple-making.

Anglican Diocese of the Great Lakes: Retired clergy, including Fr. Ernie Duross, Fr. Richard Palmer, Fr. Dennis Henkle, Fr. Rex Benfield, Fr. Dean Cole, and the Rev. Connie Harris.

Parish Cycle of Prayer: Jason, Trina, Justin and Jake Anthony; Steve, Kara and Anna Atkinson; the Hokey Pokey small group; and our Altar Guild Ministry.

Encouragement for your prayer timeGod’s grace gives us his power, which will give us confidence in living everyday life. “May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.” (2 Thessalonians 2:16-17) — From the St. Andrew’s Prayer Ministries Team

Devotionals for Advent still availableIf you haven’t yet picked up a copy of our 2018 Advent devotional, copies are still available in the Narthex. “Advent Gospel Reflections” by Bishop Robert Barron features a selected Gospel reading for each day of Advent and Christmas Day, with a reflection and journal pages.

For families and children (and grandchildren!) we have a paper Jesse Tree with stickers representing symbols from Old Testament stories leading up to the birth of the Messiah, as well as the New Testament Christmas story. Be sure to take both the tree and the sticker sheet of symbols!

Fundraiser at California Pizza Kitchen todayWe’re just a few months past the 2018 Harvest Festival, and already we’re looking ahead to 2019!

Our restaurant fundraisers earlier in the year were well received by parishioners, and went a long way toward funding the event, particularly children’s activities, so the team is bringing them back! The first fundraiser will be today, Sunday, Dec. 9, at California Pizza Kitchen at Polaris Fashion Place. Plan now to stop by after church, or take a break from your Christmas shopping or decorating, to support the Harvest Festival, which is our largest community outreach event of the year. You eat, St. Andrew’s benefits, and someone else will do the dishes! That’s sure to be especially welcome if you’ve shopped ‘til you’ve dropped!

California Pizza Kitchen will donate 20 percent of sales from members and friends of St. Andrew’s to the Harvest Festival that day. Pick up a flyer at the Information Desk to present to your server when you order, or download a copy from the “Coming Up” section of our website, standrewspolaris.org.

Luncheon on Dec. 16 to honor Tranchina familyThe parish will bid farewell to the Tranchina family as they prepare to move to Texas with a pot-blessing lunch after the 11:15 a.m. service on Sunday, Dec. 16. A sign-up sheet is available for those who would like to contribute to the light meal by providing finger foods or appetizers, fruit or veggie trays, and finger-friendly desserts. Gluten-free contributions will be welcome. Please join us for a time of fellowship as we send Ben, Danielle, Nick and Alex off with our prayers and best wishes!

Welcome tenor Eric White We’re pleased to welcome tenor Eric White as guest vocalist at the 9 a.m. service today. Eric will perform “O Holy Night” during the Offertory.

Please let us know today if your child will participate in the Festival of Lessons & Carols! The St. Andrew’s Choir, along with children and youth of St. Andrew’s, will present the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols during the Liturgy of the Word at the 9 a.m. service on the last Sunday in Advent, Dec. 23. We’d like to know today if your child or grandchild will be participating in this, our third annual presentation of this Advent tradition. Please touch base with Tally Whitehead this morning, or contact her at [email protected] or 740-548-5112.We look forward to the participation of as many children and youth as possible, including any college students home for the holidays. Depending on the number of participants, toddlers through children in first or second grade will be manger animals, and children in second or third to fifth or sixth grade will be angels and shepherds. Middle School students, from oldest to youngest, will be offered the roles of wise men, Mary, Joseph and Gabriel. When you RSVP, please include your child’s first and second choice for parts and we will try to accommodate the best we can.Costumes for manger animals will be black bottoms (pants, tights or leggings) for all, and a long sleeve top or turtleneck in white for sheep, brown for oxen, and gray for donkeys. Some costumes for the other parts will be provided, and we’ll let you know about any other costume needs once we know how many participants we have.Students in 8th grade and above will read the Scripture lessons, and as in the past Lori Cornett will be organizing a strings ensemble, which is open to our youth and young adults, to accompany on certain carols. There will be a rehearsal for those participating on Saturday, Dec. 22, between9 and 11 a.m. We plan to once again stagger arrival times from oldest to youngest, so toddlers come later and won’t have to be there for the entire time. We will confirm arrival times for rehearsal once we have a final head count for all parts. Musicians may have a slightly different rehearsal time.

About the Festival of Nine Lessons and CarolsEdward White Benson, later to become the Archbishop of Canterbury, designed the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols in 1880 for use on Christmas Eve in Cornwall, England. In 1918, King’s College in Cambridge, England began performing the Festival of Lessons and Carols each year, and in the United States, the Groton School in Massachusetts has been performing the festival annually since 1928.

Performances of the Nine Lessons and Carols have since become an Advent tradition throughout much of the Anglican Communion. The festival tells the story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus through nine short Bible readings from Genesis, the prophetic books and the Gospels, interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols and hymns.

Two-week Forum on youth and culture begins todayFr. Shane Tucker will lead a two-week video-based conversation on Youth and Culture during the Adult Forum, beginning today, from 10:15 to 11 a.m.

Today’s Conversation — Engaging Gen Z in a Post-Christian Culture with Jonathan MorrowJust like every generation of Christians, Gen Z (generally defined as those born between 1995 and 2009) lives at the intersection of faith and culture. And just like every generation, Gen Z has challenges to face and opportunities to grow into. This video highlights three cultural trends to be aware of and resist in order to engage Gen Z in our post-Christian culture.

Next Sunday’s Conversation — Helping Gen Z Build a Biblical Worldview with Jonathan MorrowGen Z faces challenges to their faith emotionally, morally, and intellectually to an extent generations before them have not. So in leading the next generation, how do we go about overcoming these challenges? It all starts with worldview.

Hey kids! Remember that St. Nicholas will visit today from 10:15 to 11 a.m.!
