St. Andrew’s Anglican Church Please turn to the inside December 15 , 2019 Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols next Sunday, Dec. 22 The St. Andrew’s Choir, along with children and youth of St. Andrew’s, will present the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols during the Liturgy of the Word at the 9 a.m. service on the Last Sunday in Advent, Dec. 22. This presentation, now in its fourth year, is always enthusiastically received and is a wonderful addition to our Advent observance. It also provides a great opportunity to invite friends and family to “come and see” what the Holy Spirit is up to at St. Andrew’s this holiday season. While the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is an Anglican Advent tradition that dates back to 1880, our presentation will have a decidedly St. Andrew’s flavor with the involvement of our youth and children. Many of our youth will be reading the lessons, and our children will present a Nativity tableau, bringing the Christmas story alive for us. Above, the parents of some of our Young Saints had a photo op with St. Nicholas after he visited with their children last Sunday in observance of the Feast of St. Nicholas, which is celebrated in the Church worldwide on Dec. 6. After his wealthy Christian parents died, he used his entire inheritance to help the poor, the sick, and children in need. Nicholas gave in secret, expecting nothing in return. He became Bishop of Myra while still a young man, was later imprisoned for his faith, and attended the Council of Nicaea in AD 325. One story tells of Nicholas throwing gold coins through an open window into stockings hanging in a poor man’s house, providing a dowry for his three daughters, thus saving them from certain slavery. An ‘Out of Darkness’ update about efforts to aid victims of traffickingThe safe house is open! For those of you who don’t know, “Out of Darkness” (OOD) was gifted a house several years ago, and since that time has been readying that property to serve as a safe house—a temporary place for trafficked women to stay until they can be connected to more permanent housing and rehab programs. Having such a place was one of the greatest needs in the Central Ohio area. Even better, the first rescue has already occurred! OOD wishes for thank you for your donations, prayers, and continued prayers for the young woman who has decided to leave the lifestyle.St. Andrew’s is currently collecting blankets, throws, sweaters, sleeping bags, and other cold weather items for OOD, but the last day is today, Dec. 15. These items will all be delivered to OOD this coming week.

OOD is also currently collecting items to try to provide a memorable Christmas for women at the safe house. They are looking for $25 to $50 gift cards to clothing stores (Kohl’s, Target, etc.) or experience places (the Zoo, a bowling alley, dinner out, etc.). They are also looking for stocking stuffers, such as costume jewelry, bath bombs, adult coloring books, pencils, etc. If you are interested in making an additional gift or have any questions, please contact Karen Osmond at 614-632-6073 or [email protected] for more information.

“Out of Darkness” is an anti-trafficking outreach and rescue organization in Columbus that provides immediate short-term crisis stabilization and hope through God, to transition exploited adult women into long-term recovery programs. The group’s three-fold purpose of the organization is to reach, rescue and restore all victims of commercial sexual exploitation that the glory of God may be known. Their vision is that every life would be restored and free.

Prayers for the ChurchAnglican Church in North America: Archbishop Foley Beach and his wife Allison; Bishop Frank Lyons and his wife, Shawnee; and the clergy and people of the Anglican Diocese of the South.

The Anglican Diocese of the South was created on June 9, 2010 as a new diocese of the Anglican Church in North America. Its first bishop is Foley Beach, consecrated on October 9, 2010. On June 21, 2014, Beach was elected the second Archbishop of the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA), with his enthronement taking place on October 9, 2014. He remains as bishop of the Anglican Diocese of the South with Frank Lyons as assisting bishop.

The diocese now encompasses 65 parishes, including eight partner congregations, in the American states of Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia. The state with most parishes is Georgia, with 23. The diocesan headquarters are located in Atlanta, Georgia, with Holy Cross Cathedral, in Loganville, Georgia. (Source: Wikipedia, diocesan website.) Please pray especially for church plants.

Encouragement for your time with GodHaving a relationship with God must be intentional on our part. “I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts; I will look to see what he will say to me …” (Habakkuk 2:1) “… the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.’ “ (Luke 2:15b) — From the St. Andrew’s Prayer Ministries Team

Lessons and CarolsContinued from the front

Share the news of God with us; invite a friend for Christmas EveWe’re pleased to make several resources available to you this Advent season to help you share the Good News of the coming of Christ with your family, friends, and neighbors.

Postcards with information about our three Christmas Eve services are available at the Information Desk. Please take a supply to hand out, mail, or include in your Christmas cards, and please also share our event at facebook.com/standrewsanglican We’re pleased to make several resources available to you this Advent season to help you share the Good News of the coming of Christ with your family, friends, and neighbors.

Postcards with information about our three Christmas Eve services are available at the Information Desk. Please take a supply to hand out, mail, or include in your Christmas cards, and please also share our event at facebook.com/standrewsanglican on your Facebook timeline and other social media!

Fr. Shane Tucker has also secured a supply of the evangelistic pamphlet, “The Cast of Christmas,” for us to share with others. Are there folks in your life who may have grown up hearing about Christmas—who may perhaps even celebrate the season—but might be yearning for a deeper understanding of what it’s really about? This little booklet will help you share the hope of the Christmas message, the truth of who Jesus is, and why we’re still talking about his birth two thousand years later: The hope of Immanuel—God with us—who stepped into human history to rescue us from the sinfulness of a broken world, to shine light into the darkness, to bring life from death.

Copies of “The Cast of Christmas” are available at the Information Desk, along with a supply of labels with the St. Andrew’s logo, our address, and information about our services. We encourage you to take as many copies of this little publication as you wish, fold them in quarters and attach a label in the space provided on the back, and freely pass them out among your family and friends, and in your neighborhood.

Please contact Judy Baird at [email protected] or 740-548-5112, ext. 3, or Fr. Shane at [email protected] or 740-548-5112, ext. 4, if you need additional copies of the Christmas Eve postcard or “The Cast of Christmas.”

Brotherhood concludes fall study; plan to join them in the new yearThe Brotherhood of St. Andrew has concluded our fall study session. We will not meet during the Advent season. Our next meeting will be the beginning of our fall term on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2020. That meeting in January will commence a new study, so, if you were waiting to start attending because you didn’t wish to come in the middle of an ongoing study, now is your chance to jump in. We hope to see all men and boys on Jan. 21, at 7:30 pm in the parish house conference room. We make every effort to end each meeting no later than 9:00 pm. If you have questions, please contact Ed Summers on 614-371-1649.

A note about Prayer Book dedicationsNow that all of our copies of the new Book of Common Prayer have arrived we’re preparing to print bookplates for those given in honor of family members or friends. If you contributed toward the purchase of a prayer book or books, please watch for an email from Judy Baird within the next week asking you to confirm how you want your dedication to read.

We’ve heard from many of our families whose children will be participating, but still need to hear from a number of our youth. We still have several parts open for middle school students, and need several high-schoolers, college students, or young adults to read the lessons.

If we’ve not yet heard from you please see Judy Baird in church today, or contact her at 740-548-5112, ext. 3 or [email protected].

Dress rehearsal will be this coming Saturday, Dec. 21, from 9 to 11 a.m. We plan to stagger arrival times for the rehearsal from oldest to youngest, so toddlers won’t have to be there as long. We’ll confirm your arrival time once all of the parts are confirmed.

Lori Cornett will be in contact individually with youth and young adults participating in the strings choir. If your child plays a stringed instrument and would like to participate, but has not yet talked with Lori, please let Judy know that, as well, so we can have Lori contact you.

Christmas morning service and brunchCome join your fellow parishioners for Christmas Day Brunch on Wednesday, Dec. 25. We’ll begin with Morning Prayer at 9 a.m., with the brunch following at 9:15 a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend either just the Morning Prayer service, or both the service and the brunch. And guests are welcome!

Those attending are asked to bring a breakfast type dish.

There will also be a re-gift gift swap (aka “what’s in your attic?”). Find an item in your house that you have always wanted to get rid of, wrap it, and bring it to swap. (Please bring one “re-gift” per person attending.)

Sign-up at the Information Desk, or online by clicking on the Christmas Day Brunch event on the calendar on our website. Contact Randy or Didi Smith, 740-417-5613 or [email protected], with questions.

Youth Christmas party Sunday, Dec. 22The annual St. Andrew’s Youth Christmas Party will be next Sunday, Dec. 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Gathering Area.

We’re excited to be partnering once again with a ministry called Joyous Trees, which provides mini Christmas trees for young people who will be spending the holidays in the hospital. Our young people will decorate these trees and write cards to hospitalized youth to let them know we're thinking of, and praying for, them this time of year. This is a small, but practical, way to share God's love with those recovering from illness and injury.

There will also be pizza and Christmas cookies, along with a “White Elephant” gift exchange, a hilarious and fun time of opening gifts, then stealing them from one another. Finds something unwanted in your home, or spend $5 at most, wrap the gift and brings it to enter the exchange. Last year Fr. Shane walked away with a Home Alone board game!

Parents and caregivers of our youth are welcome to join them for the Christmas party!
