St Andrew’s Fair Saturday2019 Programme Launch Event
#FairSaturdayScotland
Building bridges through culture.
We are living in times of complexity and uncertainty. Everything seems to go faster. The short term rises above the serene vision of the long term. The strong desire of “having” instead of the profound aspiration of “being”. The growing concern about what is ours instead of the empathy with the most vulnerable, no matter their origin.
We need to rethink the way we are building our future. For that we consider there are two essential elements to build fairer and more developed societies: culture and empathy. These are the two ingredients that dignify us and that contribute to humanised development based on science’s progress. What we basically define as a better world.
Fair Saturday is a small idea that wishes to contribute to this. Aiming at nothing less than to make people think, to generate a positive impact through culture and through the people’s need to be responsible for the creation of a better world.
Specifically, Fair Saturday is a global mobilisation that aims to create a positive social impact every last Saturday of November, the day following Black Friday, the greatest expression of consumerism. Artists and cultural organisations from all over the world get together in a global festival following just one requirement: to support a social cause of their choice through their show. How?
• Showing how proud they are of the work they do.
• Helping them spread their message through their communication channels and giving them some time before the show to share it with the audience.
• Generating funds for the chosen project by freely and voluntarily donating part of the value generated in the event (tickets, donations...).
Fair Saturday is definitely a positive initiative, independent, apolitical and respectful of human rights, that aims to create a global cultural movement with a positive impact in society every last Saturday of November.
A day. Culture. Change.
Fair Saturday ethos
Greetings
Ben Macpherson MSPMinister for Europe, Migration and International Development
St Andrew’s Fair Saturday is Scotland’s contribution to the global Fair Saturday movement. Scotland is proud to have played a significant role in the development of this global initiative, as the first nation to participate as a whole.
The spirit of St Andrew’s Day and the ethos of Fair Saturday make this a perfect collaboration. Both celebrations hold a shared set of values - kindness, fairness, inclusivity and internationalism.
This year St. Andrew’s Day and Fair Saturday both fall on the same day, so we’re determined to make our 2019 St Andrew’s Day celebrations the biggest yet.
Scotland is an outward-looking country and we’re encouraging everyone to join us in the celebrations of our national day and Fair Saturday, by showing kindness on 30 November and by making a positive impact individually and together.

We ignore the power an idea can have. Until we set it in motion. In Bilbao, Bay of Biscay, on November 29, 2014, a simple idea was born. What if the day that follows Black Friday, a strong mobilisation took place in favour of arts and culture to support at the same time different social causes?
And what for? To highlight how much arts and culture are needed to build stronger and more developed societies; to foster social empathy and inclusion; to stimulate citizen participation around a positive idea; to create meeting spaces between cities; to build bridges between different cultures. Shouldn’t we try?
From that day, cities, artists, cultural organisations, social projects and organisations from all over the world have decided to get involved. From many places around the world. Making this idea possible. Giving it a sense. Creating something beautiful. Exciting.
We are proud that Scotland became the first nation to embrace this positive movement towards culture and social empathy, being an inspiring landmark for the rest of the world.
Have a good St Andrews Fair Saturday celebration!

In 2017 Nicola Sturgeon announced during the St Andrew’s Day reception at Edinburgh Castle that Scotland was going to celebrate Fair Saturday at a national level linking it to the wider celebration of Scotland’s National Day, St Andrew’s Day, hence becoming the first European nation to officially join the Fair Saturday movement.
Scotland is emphasising on the nation’s commitment to being open, outward-looking, inclusive and diverse, through the celebration of St Andrew’s Fair Saturday. It also highlights the role that arts and culture must play in the construction of fairer societies.
Launched at the Edinburgh International Festival Hub, the first edition, exceeded all expectations strengthening the celebration of St Andrew’s Day with 85 cultural events with a social impact all across Scotland.
In St. Andrew´s Fair Saturday 2019 edition new cultural organisations, social projects and local authorities join in this positive movement, creating the best ever nationwide cultural movement with a social impact.
Come and enjoy!
