My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle!

Where were you fifteen years ago when the towers fell on Nine-Eleven? I remember that morning coming from church and going to the Parish Office to be shocked by the news of planes crashing into the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and one plane designated for Washington, D.C. that crashed in a field — almost 3,000 killed, 6,000 injured, and over $3 trillion dollars in total costs. After 15 years, what has been our response? For us Catholic Christians, we must continue to seek the aid, mercy, and grace of God, especially the gift of the Holy Spirit. After Jesus’ death and resurrection, among the first words He said were “Peace be with you.” And close following those words were “Receive the Holy Spirit.” God’s Spirit is one of healing power, mercy, reconciliation, forgiveness, love, and peace. How many hearts within our human family are filled with violence, unjust anger, hatred, disrespect of human life — all of them need the gift of the Holy Spirit and the gifts that come with Him, especially wisdom, right judgment, counsel, understanding, courage, devotion and a true and holy fear of the Lord. This past week, our young people, mostly our graduated 8th graders now beginning their freshman year in high school, received the Holy Spirit, the peace of Jesus, the strength to follow Jesus more closely everyday in this broken world. Pray for them and all our young people who are called, just like all disciples of Jesus, to spread the Good News of God’s Love and Peace through the powerful grace of Jesus’ Resurrection from the dead. By the Holy Spirit, we share and participate in this new LIFE of Jesus — may their lives as well as all our lives reflect the healing light and love of the Holy Spirit! I am so proud of our Confirmation candidates for their strong faith — this faith in our young people is alive and strong! Their letters to me were full of their excitement to receive this gift! See how important faith still is in the life of many, many young people, as in the hearts of the young people who wrote the excerpted paragraphs printed below. Let us all re-awaken and revive the Spirit of joy and gladness that we have received from the Resurrection of Jesus, who breathes on His disciples and says, “Receive the Holy Spirit!”

In the loving Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Fr. Gregor

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Father Gregor, …

♦ ...My favorite service was Feed My Starving Children [seeing] that everyone does not have shelter. In the future I hope to keep on helping and volunteering as much as I can. Sincerely, “Michael” (his Confirmation name)

♦ ...During these past weeks that I’ve been going to church and coming to class every other week, I have noticed that I enjoy volunteering and that knowing that what I’m doing is something good...I’m helping people out that don’t have what I have. It really makes me reflect on what I really have and what I should really cherish more often. I feel that people nowadays especially all they do is ask and ask for things. I feel that no one really takes time to reflect for what they have. I feel that we just take things for granted… The experience that made me feel and think like this is Harvest Saturday because I was out asking people for food and some people were really generous but then there was some who just wouldn’t want to give anything… I feel that Harvest Saturday is a way for the church to show us how uniting people and helping out is a good way to go. … Sincerely, “Guadalupe”(her Confirmation name)

♦ ...And something I have learned about God is that, he always listens to you. Even when you think he has abandoned you, he hasn’t. He will walk with you through all the pain…. Throughout my life, I will make sure to always have God in my life, and to not forget that he is always there to help me…. Sincerely, “Anthony” (his Confirmation name)

♦ ...I plan to continue my faith in God after Confirmation by going to church every Sunday and believing that God puts obstacles in my life for certain reasons. While I’m transitioning into another chapter in my life I feel like having God present is even more important now.... “Michael” (her Confirmation name)

♦ ...My favorite project was helping at Vacation Bible School. It felt good to help the children learn and grow in our faith and be the person in charge of the activities. This relates to Confirmation by me wanting to give back to the church and the community and to help make a positive impact on this world…. Sincerely, “Francis” (his Confirmation name)

♦ ...One of the most important things I learned is that although it may not always seem like it, God is always watching over you and making sure you’re okay. As my journey of faith continues, my faith also continues to grow, allowing me to be a happier and better person…. Sincerely, “Cecilia” (her Confirmation name)

Resurrection Choir

Our Funeral Choir can always use additional voices. This group ministers at funerals held here at St. Andrew. The funerals are normally at 10:00 AM. This is an ideal ministry for those who love to sing, but cannot make a commitment to a regular weekly choir rehearsal. Most of the hymns are from the blue Gather books and are songs that we know well. Members are notified a few days in advance by phone. You can participate as often or as little as your schedule permits. If you are interested in singing at funerals to minister to those who mourn, please contact Sue at 815-886-4165 ext. 314 or email at [email protected].

Our parish is participating in a special fundraiser to promote and further a Culture of Life within our parish and local community. Woman’s Choice Services (who we have donated to in the past) has combined with Waterleaf Pregnancy Center. On the weekend of September 24/25, 2016, baby bottles will be distributed to parishioners to take home and fill with spare change, cash or checks. Bottles can be returned the weekend of October 1st and 2nd or October 8th and 9th. This fundraiser is a great way for each member of the family to help in building a Culture of Life. LOOKING FOR CATCHISTS— . “The Church needs you. Your enthusiasm. Your Creativity and

Joy that is so characteristic of you.” - Pope Francis

THE POPE TO CATECHISTS: DO NOT BE AFRAID OF GOING BEYOND YOUR BOUNDARIES – GOD IS ALREADY THERE.

• The catechist must be those “who keep the memory of God alive; they keep it alive in themselves and they are able to revive it in others”, like Mary, “who … sees God’s wondrous works in her life … but instead, after receiving the mes-sage of the angel and conceiving the Son of God … goes to assist her elderly kinswoman Elizabeth, also pregnant”, and upon encountering her, “the first thing she does … is to recall God’s work, God’s fidelity, in her own life, in the history of her people, in our history … Mary remembers God”.

• A catechist is a Christian who puts this remembrance at the service of proclamation, not to seem important, not to talk about himself or herself, but to talk about God, about his love and his fidelity.

• “Let us ask the Lord that we may all be men and women who keep the memory of God alive in ourselves, and are able to awaken it in the hearts of others”.

“God will use you to accomplish great things on the condition that you believe

more in his love than in your own weakness.”

- St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta

We are not alone. In this great mercy work, we are not alone. The Letter to the Hebrews (12:1-4) declares we can run the race, we can live the Christian life, we can keep our eyes fixed on Jesus because we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses. We are not alone. We who eat and drink Christ’s Blood and Body are

“conformed to his image on earth” in order to not only look like him but also be like him.

Who is lonely, cut off, alone, and needs my visit?

Who can I surround with my witness and comfort?

WELCOME!!! SEE YOU THERE!!!

Fifteen years ago, the continuing TV coverage of the imploding twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York was unbearable for me, as were accounts of the crashes and destruction in Washington and the hills of Pennsylvania. The immense devastation of human life was incomprehensible. Visiting the site in New York some five years later reopened searing wounds, and overwhelmed me with immense sadness. An incursion on our soil, carefully planned and executed by foreign elements, had shattered my cherished sense of security, and provoked a frightening sense of God’s absence. How could my Catholic faith tradition enable me to endure this tragedy? I knew that neither vengeance nor sweeping animosity was an option for me. You have left us crushed . . . covered us with darkness. We are bowed down to the ground (Psalm 44:20, 26). O LORD of hosts, restore us; Let your face shine upon us (Psalm 80:4). The Psalmist cries a lament, expressing the mourning of the Israelite people, the chosen of God, who had regarded themselves as untouchable and above reproach, now hurled into misery. The lament expresses a nation’s agony, dares to complain against their divine protector, may even own some complicity in the misery, and finally pleads with God for deliverance. In the midst of lamenting, the faith of Israel endured, as must ours. We are as vulnerable as they were to the violence and hatred that seem to encircle us. Our demand for a divine explanation goes unheeded. Yet we have learned of the self-sacrificing heroism of many, witnessing to the finest character of our nation and of our Christian heritage. Dying for one’s friends is a sacred theme in our story, epitomized in Jesus, our Savior, and extended through centuries in the grandest and noblest acts of men and women in all circumstances. In 2001 we came together as one nation under God, sharing the grief, the disillusionment, and the promise to rebuild. As today we lament our honored dead and wounded, shall we translate such agonizing emotion into a persistent pursuit of worldwide reconciliation and peace?
