We will be welcoming our new Curate Leslie
Roraback to St. Andrew’s On-the-Sound at the
beginning of June. Look for her bio further in in this edition of
Soundings. She will be our 4th Curate in my time here, and this
has become both a gift to St. Andrew’s and to the Diocese and
larger church.
We have the joy of seeing people, fresh out of seminary, filled
with ideas and dreams as they begin to see how those visions
may fit in the daily life of the church.
We also have the task of loving them into the priesthood.
Wearing a collar is a symbol of a true change in life, and it
takes a couple of years for most people to get used to that,
and to see where their expectations for ministry, and your
expectations for them meet. There is also the adjustment to
life in the church, an entity like no other!
We have the privilege of walking this path with Leslie. Each of
our Curates has been unique, and she will be no different, She
brings a broader experience of life out in the world, and a skill
set based on a varied vocational life. I am sure she will be a
special gift for us, as we will be for her.
The process in the church currently, is ordination to the
transitional Diaconate, followed by ordination to the Priesthood
6 months later. Her Diaconal Ordination is currently scheduled
as an outdoor service at Mt. Lebanon Chapel at 6 pm on the
2nd
of June.
The Rectors Reckonings
Leslie is a life-long Episcopalian, was born in
Okinawa, Japan the youngest of four children in a
military family. She grew up in Fayetteville, NC attending St.
Paul’s in-the-Pines. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Religious
Studies from Concordia College (Moorhead, MN) and will
receive her Master in Divinity from Virginia Theological
Seminary on May 13. While at VTS she completed
internships at Goodwin House Senior Living and Washington
National Cathedral. Leslie and has had previous careers in
administration, development, and marketing in the non-profit
sectors of healthcare, urban ministry, and the arts.
She has three children Jillian (29),
Laurel (25), and Benjamin (18) who
are each great source of joy and
encouragement. In her spare time,
she spends hours with her English
Springer Spaniel Bridget, and loves
cooking and baking for others.
Leslie is overjoyed to be returning
home to The Episcopal Diocese of
East Carolina accepting a call to
serve as Curate at St. Andrew's On-
the-Sound Episcopal Church in
Wilmington, NC. She says, that she says having made a
quick trip to and in meeting some of the members of St.
Andrew’s, that she has found this church to be a parish filled
with loving people living their best life in Christ. She says, “I
am humbled by this call and look forward to joining the
community in June.
Please feel free to email me at [email protected] or
to find me on Facebook. I can’t wait to meet you all!”

Flowers On-the-Sound
Dear Members and Friends of
St. Andrew’s On-the-Sound,
Happy Eastertide! I hope all of you are having a wonderful
Easter season, enjoying the beautiful spring weather and the
many colors of the flowers currently in bloom. Due to the
newsletter production schedule, I usually write this article
several weeks before you see it in your inboxes. As I write
this, we have just finished up the Second Sunday of Easter,
and I have spent the last week reflecting on the very
meaningful Holy Week and Easter services that we
experienced together. Thank you for making my first Triduum
with you one to remember! Certainly we will all never forget it
due to the Covid protocols that necessitated many changes
in our usual traditions, but I will also remember it due to all of
your warm welcomes and friendly hellos as Easter was the
first Sunday many of you have been able to attend church in
a very long time. Easter was indeed a wonderful day of
celebration for all of us and gave me new hope that things
are beginning to return to normal slowly. It was great to
speak to several of you about the possibility of choir returning
in due course, and it was wonderful to hear many of you
humming along to some of our favorite Easter hymns. While
it is too early to begin formal preparations for singing and
choirs in church based on our guidelines, I do hope that we
can begin easing into some additional musical activities as
we turn toward late summer and fall. It is not too early to
begin thinking about your possible participation. I would love
to hear from you if you have any interest in singing solos or in
small groups in the coming months. Please reach out to me
via phone, email, or at church on Sundays.
As we look forward to May, I am excited about some of my
favorite Sundays of the church year coming up. These
include Ascension, Pentecost, and Trinity Sunday. These
From the Music Room
More from the Music Room services have some wonderful hymns that we only get to sing
once a year. While we cannot sing the hymns loudly, I do
play them during the services, and we put the words in the
bulletin so you can sing them to yourself and in your heart.
One hymn for this time of year that is especially meaningful
to me is “Come down, O love divine.” This text is unusual
because all of it is directed as a prayer to the Holy Spirit. It is
often sung on the Day of Pentecost. The text, quite old, was
written by Italian monk Bianco da Siena in the fourteenth
century, though it has really only gained popularity in English
speaking hymnals in the last fifty years. The Italian poem
was not published until 1851, and Anglican priest Richard
Littledale translated it into English in 1867. English
composer and hymnal editor extraordinaire Ralph Vaughan
Williams seemingly disliked the tune that was used for this
text in earlier English hymnals, so he wrote the fantastic tune
Down Ampney for the 1906 English Hymnal, which he
compiled. This tune has been used with it since that time
and has made it quite popular in Anglican circles. I invite you
to take a listen to it on YouTube. A lovely version was
recorded in 2001 by the Choir of King’s College Cambridge
and is located here: https://youtu.be/APvO08xjJR4.

Episcopal Youth Community
In April, we were able to have three regular programming’s in person and outside at the church. We were blessed with sunny weather for all three. Our last regular programming included an in-house service project wrapped around the theme “Earth Day”. Our project included cleaning up the church’s cemetery. We raked lots of leaves and were excited to uncover many graves. This project will definitely be on our calendar yearly.

This month we have our last regular programming for the Spring on May 2nd. Then we will have our Youth Sunday on May 16th. Youth Sunday is always a memorable day for our young people. They look forward to it every year. Yes, they have fun, but more importantly, they get to try all aspects of a church service. We will also be recognizing our high school seniors at the 11am service. Both of these services will be outside on the grass area. I hope you can join us at the 9am or 11am Youth Sunday service on May 16th. Thank you for being a supportive community for our young people to spread their wings!

Spring is the season of new beginnings. Flowers bloom, animals awaken, and the earth seems to come to life again. What a great time to celebrate God’s creation and our call to care for it. Earth Day and the life cycle of butterflies were highlights in the month of April.
