Life as a ST3 GPST?
Surgeries
Come in 15 minutes early to review the records Start on time! Organise your workspace Encourage your trainer to do some sit and swap
surgeries Don’t forget that ‘sitting in’ should occur
occasionally throughout ST3 not just at induction Have realistic expectations about your
knowledge, skills and performance
Tips for surviving on call
Working in pairs identify ways in which you can make GP on call more bearable
Home Visits
You can not avoid them Max 3 visits, usually 1 to 2 Prior to Tuesday HDR 1 visit is the norm Doctor’s bag, A-Z and mobile phone
Tutorials & debriefs & OOH
2 hours weekly of protected tutorial time Scheduled post surgery debriefs You need to have completed 6 hours of
OOH sessions per month of GP training (14 to 18 x 6 for most GPSTs)
The must include a variety of triage, home visit and surgery sessions
Time for tea!
ARCP It does not have to be like this!
Working in pairs
Progression to CCT - What does the ARCP panel assess?
When does this happen? How will you ensure a satisfactory
outcome?
Designing your road map
Working in small groups
Draw your time line for the ST3 year detailing the approximate dates of OOH sessions, courses, exams, Educational Supervision, ARCP panel, CCT application, job applications and other deadlines etc
What if things go wrong?
Don’t forget to enjoy your GPST year!
