ation, her first full-time job was working in the management office and on the road with the band. “I started the day Cracked Rear View came out,” she says. “They called the music ‘Y’all-ternative,’ so I’m not surprised Darius Rucker has become a successful coun-try artist.” Working with Hootie, Oliver-Cline had direct contact with the label and organized shows around the tour. “Everyone in a band or playing music in the Southeast wanted to open for them,” she

says, noting venue constraints often made that difficult. Instead, she would find other locations and coordinate a post-show party announced from the stage in each market. Experience on the touring side didn’t dampen her dream of exploring other aspects of the business. “I tried to move to Nash-ville in 2004 and start my own publishing company, but I went flat broke,” she says. Instead of Nashville, she moved to Atlanta and worked for BMI, where she met Zac Brown and his longtime co-writer Wyatt Durette. She became a resource for them, setting up showcases and meetings, eventually joining Roar management. Once again, she was on the road in the South-east with a band that was blowing up. “After a while, Zac said, ‘You don’t want to be on the road with a bunch of guys. What do you want to do?’” She still had a vision for publish-ing and, she recalls, “Zac said, ‘Let’s start a record company, too.’” Southern Ground Artists was born and Oliver-Cline moved to Nashville nine years after her first attempt. Her work at Southern Ground connected her with then-label president Ken Robold and marketer Paige Altone. After the label was shuttered, Oliver-Cline moved on to Thirty Tigers as VP/Mar-keting & Project Manager, still hoping to start her own publishing company. River House was her husband’s idea and the company launched in October 2015, one week before Oliver-Cline met Luke Combs through friend Chris Kappy. Combs was touring extensively in the Southeast, had his own EP and had shopped his music around town. “The rejections came with the advice that he should just concentrate on being a writer,” Oliver-Cline says. But when she listened, what she heard was “real, authentic.” She was in. Combs became River House’s first recording artist. Songwriters Ray Fulcher and Robert Williford signed to the publishing division and contributed to 10 of the 12 songs on Combs’ debut This One’s For You. The rest is well documented: Thirty Tigers’ promotion team took Combs› touring and streaming success to Country radio. (“Pam Newman is still a consultant for us,” she says). PDs ended up at packed shows and saw crowds already singing along. Momentum grew to the point where Oliver-Cline’s Southern Ground buddies Altone and Robold, now at Sony, were checking it out. “[Colum-bia’s] Bo Martinovich was a big fan too,” she adds. “So I think when [Sony EVP] Steve Hodges is walking down the hall hearing

Riser House’s Mitchell Tenpenny discusses his most influential music:1. Michael Jackson: Every element of production, from his beats to melodies, were undeniable. I loved the way he danced. I mean, who didn’t try to imitate the moonwalk?2. John Mayer: His live show is incredible. The way he can quiet a crowd on an acoustic song is insane. 3. ‘NSync: They taught me how to harmonize. I have also always been obsessed

with their melodies. 4. Keith Urban: Keith is just an all-around amazing artist. There is a reason he has been at the top of this industry for so long, because he is so talented. 5. Brooks & Dunn: They are also great, all-around artists. Brooks and Dunn are amazing entertainers and have some great hits.• Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: Everybody loves Imagine Dragons and I always hear how incredible they are, but I haven’t ever listened to their music. • “Important” music you just don’t get: Folk artists are amazing songwriters, but most of the time I don’t understand the melodies. • An album you listened to incessantly: The 1975’s self-titled debut album.• Obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: There is a band called Issues, and their song “Hooligans” should be on everyone’s playlist. The whole track is impressive, with hard-core music and pop vocals. It goes from heavy scream to melodic vocals and it could not work better. • Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: I’m obsessed with Katy Perry – everything about her.

RCA’s Ryan Hurd puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to WBCT/Grand Rapids, MI. They have a huge event called the B93 Birthday Bash. It was my first introduction into the country music concert world. As a songwriter, the first time I heard myself on the radio was driving down Wedgewood Avenue in Nashville. A song I

wrote for Rascal Flatts called “Payback” came on. It was such a cool moment. I almost crashed my car. As an artist, the first time I heard my new single “Love In A Bar” on the radio, I was at WYNK/Baton Rouge, LA. They said they’d play it in 10 minutes so while we were driving, we had the station on. My family is from Chicago and I grew up in Kalamazoo, MI, so Chicago’s always been a really important market for me. To play shows for Chicago listeners was really neat. To have both WEBG and WUSN add me the first week – that was such a validating moment. I love truck stop coffee. It’s delicious, for some reason. I would love to have dinner with Willie Nelson. I don’t really care what we’d order. I’d get a beer and just listen to that dude’s stories. I have a horrible habit of buying merch tees. I go on people’s websites and look at all their merch because I’m interested in it, because we sell merch, too. And then I always end up buying something. So my last impulse buy was Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s Soul2Soul Tour concert tee. I’ll wear it onstage either tomorrow or tonight. That’s 100 percent happening. I wish I’d written “My Church” for Maren [Morris, Hurd’s fiancée]. But there are a couple of others out now on the radio – Morgan Wallen’s “The Way I Talk,” which I think is so smart. And Sam Hunt’s “Body Like A Back Road” for the copyright. We have a very specific tequila collection on the road – Espolon. That’s pretty important. My least favorite interview question is when people ask me what I think of Maren’s haircut. That’s a pretty rude question – like my opinion of that is important at all. I think it’s really hot, but that question bugs me. For the most part, I’ve been asked really good questions. I’d love to be stuck in Chicago. I just love it. It’s such a fun city.

Luke’s music in three different offices, some-thing clicked for everyone in the building.” The No. 1 party for Combs’ first single “Hurricane” is tomorrow (7/11) in Nash-ville. Having seen the model play out three times now, Oliver-Cline certainly believes the model is replicable. River House has signed Georgia singer-songwriter Faren Rachels. “She will be on shows with Dwight Yoakam this month and touring with Luke

this fall,” she says, adding confidently, “She is just so ... real.” Reach Oliver-Cline here. –Paul Williams

Keep Your Day Job: The show aired two hours each Thurs-day night on the company’s two stations – WXFL/Florence and WLVS/Clifton, TN – and live-streamed at ms2mr.com. “We did 26 shows a year almost like TV flights – eight weeks on, then a break,” Martin says. “We had a fan base almost instantly. We had viewership in all 50 states and 20 countries around the world, and we popped a million streams really quick. We weren’t making any money, but we were doing what we set out to do.” MS2MRL quickly outgrew the local Holiday Inn and moved to a newly built Marriott with a conference center. “The bad thing was it was full set-up and tear-down for every show, which was just so labor intensive,” Martin says. “We’re just a small com-pany. I was making calls to book it, Jerry Phillips [the late Sam’s son] was making calls. We still had a day job, too. We had radio stations to run.” Cutting back to monthly, the show found its groove and, eventu-ally, interest from APT, fueled in part by a successful documentary about the local music scene. “When Muscle Shoals came out in

2013, we started talking to Big River about what they’re doing with their online series,” says APT Dir./Programming Mike McK-enzie. “The year after that is when serious talks started about making that into a TV program.” Remember My Name: Tapping the area’s music roots even further meant a venue change. “We started thinking about how to kick it up another notch and wondered if we could do it from one of the studios here,” Martin says. Talks started with Rick Hall and his son Rodney at FAME Studio about doing the show from their Studio A, and the idea was a hit. “When we told APT they were like, ‘Oh my God, how cool is this?’” MS2MRL started doing shows at FAME in May, with APT debut-ing the show last Thursday (7/6). WXFL PD Fletcher Brown hosts, and APT will mix new shows with selections from the show’s deep archives. Among the artists who’ve performed are Shenandoah, Steel Drivers, James Otto with Big Al Anderson, LoCash with Jason Matthews, Margo Price, Restless Heart, Danielle Peck and Drake White. invitation extended by some folks several hundred miles west. “We touched base with the folks at Austin City Limits,” McKenzie says. “They had us out, gave us a tour and explained how their show came about. ACL has its own separate production unit from KL-RU-TV and we hope to build the same dynamic in our partnership with Sam Phillips Music.” Martin admits how attractive ACL’s business model looks. “We’re certainly aware of the impact ACL has had nationally,” he says. “They could not have been more gracious and we learned a lot.” Turning a profit wasn’t a goal for MS2MRL, but Martin is cer-

tainly open to the idea. “We’d like to get to a break-even point,” he half-jokes. “But it’s a great programming tool and was never about the money.” The show has had local sponsors, and with broader distribution through APT, the scale of opportunity grows. “We’ve had those aspirations for a long time, now we have the vehicle to get that further down the road,” Martin says, noting the learning curve in a partnership between a commercial broadcaster and a non-com. Brought To You By: “We don’t do commercials, but we do want sponsors and have some of that lined up already,” McKenzie

says. “Once the show starts to broadcast and we keep spreading the word, we don’t think we’ll have any problem bringing on more of that corporate support. Big River has been able to make things work on their side for some time. The model is a little different, but good music is something people want to be connected with and this won’t lack for interest.” Martin suggests stations don’t have to be associated with Austin or Muscle Shoals to build similar vehicles. “We’re blessed to have that heritage in our back yard, but so many stations have con-

nections to things we don’t – festivals and more,” he says. “There are opportunities out there for stations to seek out and create their own path in a way that sets them apart.” Reach Martin here.
