11 So Christ himself gave the apos-
tles, the prophets, the evangel-
ists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to
equip his people for works of ser-
vice, so that the body of Christ may
be built up 13 until we all reach
unity in the faith and in the knowl-
edge of the Son of God and become
mature, attaining to the whole
measure of the fullness of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be in-
fants, tossed back and forth by the
waves, and blown here and there
by every wind of teaching and by
the cunning and craftiness of peo-
ple in their deceitful scheming.
Ephesians 4: 11-14
It is a crazy world out there, and
we can often feel like we are being
tossed by the waves and blown by
the wind. As parents, grandpar-
ents, neighbors, and friends, we
want the best for our young people.
We want to give them the knowl-
edge, experiences, and faith to
stand firm against the waves and
wind. But with all the options and
activities and schoolwork, it can be
hard to fit faith into the picture for
ourselves, much less our kids.
A recent study by the Fuller Youth
Institute found that only 50-60 per-
cent of highly involved Christian
youth group participants stick with
their faith in college or become
part of a Christian community. If
you’ve ever been in school, you
know that 50-60 percent is not a
passing grade. And this is from
our superstar Christian youth, the
ones in whom we put our hope for
the future of our faith.
At First Church, we have spent the
summer talking, sharing, and
dreaming about how we can give
our young people the best opportu-
nities to grow a strong, lasting
foundation in faith. For us, this
Firs
T started with Sunday school. We
hope you have had a chance to
check out our new children’s and
youth Sunday school models.
Our elementary kids are being
challenged each year to really
engage in traditional markers of
our faith as they work through the
most enduring stories in Scripture.
For example, our youngest ones
are focusing on the fact that Jesus
loves them, and will be singing
about that all year. Our third
graders are still putting on the
armor of God, while others are
learning the Lord’s Prayer, the
Fruits of the Spirit, Psalm 23 and,
most importantly, what they mean
to us.
Further, our youth grades 6-12
now have a discipleship sequence
that will take them on an amazing
spiritual journey. Our 6th and 7th
graders have all been given new
Bibles and will spend the next
two years walking through Scrip-
ture from Genesis to Revelation.
The 8th and 9th graders are focus-
ing on what they believe about
their faith, while learning about
the historic Christian and Method-
ist beliefs. Finally, our 10th-12th
graders will spend the next two
years growing in Christian com-
munity and preparing themselves
for life after high school and
youth group.
We hope that you encourage those
young people around you to join
these Sunday morning faith com-
munities as we join one another
together in the bonds of Christian
love, raising our young people up
to be strong, vibrant Christians in
a world that so desperately needs
the light of Christ.

OOPERATIONPERATION CCHRISTMASHRISTMAS CCHILDHILD The time to think about Op-eration Christmas Child is here! Our church will be collecting boxes again for our members who would like to participate. There will be a table in the lobby starting October 16 where you can find more informa-tion, brochures, boxes, and other information. You can also drop off your filled box at the table. National col-lection week is November 14-21. It is very important that all boxes be turned in on or before Sunday November 20 so we have time to get them to the col-lection location. All boxes received after November 20 will be saved for next year. Any questions please contact Melissa Valtos at 816-830-6185.
Join us on Saturday nights
and Sunday mornings in the
coming weeks as we walk
through portions of Paul's
letter to the Romans. Paul
tackles some big issues and
so will we: issues like faith
and grace, sin and righteous-
ness. Come and worship our
living God and hear Paul's
words to the Romans and
God's words to us.
