On May 31, Jessica JuneChildren’s CancerFoundation (JJCCF)

held “STAR Date.” The daystarted at 2 p.m. at BrowardGeneral Medical Center withphotographs taken with thepediatric oncology team beforedeparting on a stretch Hummerlimousine to hot spots in FortLauderdale. Stops included theMuseum of Discovery &Science, Blue Martini for a“Kiddie Cocktail Party,”Dillard’s for a shopping spree,Neiman Marcus, Godiva forsweet treats and concluded withdinner and a show at theMai-Kai restaurant.

“The ‘Star Date’ was a

magical day we will alwaysremember,” said Sandra Muvdi, president and founder ofJJCCF. “All participatingchildren and family membershave received JJCCF’semergency financial assistanceand are still undergoing cancertreatment, but they were allsmiles during the special day.Projects like this offer ourchildren a respite from battlinga life-threatening illness andgive them a chance to enjoy afun time with their fellowpatients, families and siblings.”

Dillard’s surprised four of thecancer heroes with a shoppingspree, where each child pickedan outfit of their choice. Cara

Dennis (a 4-year-old fightingneuroblastoma at Chris EvertChildren’s Hospital) picked outher future white wedding dress.Lourain Cahaw-McNabb (a7-year-old fighting leukemia atChris Evert Children’s Hospital)picked out her bridesmaiddress. Elijah Barrios (an11-year-old fighting bone andeye cancer at JacksonMemorial) picked out a preppypair of jeans with a Polo shirt;and Angel Nazario (a3-year-old fighting brain cancerat Joe DiMaggio Children’sHospital) was the first tocomplete his spree with shortsand a T-shirt in his favoritecolor, brown.

“I liked going to Dillard’s themost! I can’t wait to show mytwo older sisters my newwedding dress,” said Dennis.

The children were treated tofront row seats at Mai-Kai for adinner and show. After theshow, the kids were invited togo on stage to practice newdance steps with the performersas the audience clapped. At 11p.m., the STARS returned toBroward General MedicalCenter. There were 17 “STARDate” participants, who quicklybecame a big family whilejoking and dancing throughoutthe respite day. The fun daterepresented a wonderful escapefrom the day-to-day task of

fighting a life-threateningillness.

“My favorite was themuseum bubbles and the firedancers at the Mai-Kai,” saidBarrios.

The “STAR” date wasintroduced as a spinoff to apromise made to the childrenwho were recognized at the past“STAR” event in March.JJCCF’s second annual “STAR”event was held to recognizethose who contributed to theorganization during 2010.

“The whole day was wow.Seeing all the children enjoyingthemselves and bonding wasmy favorite part,” said CraigDennis, Cara’s dad.

Founded in 2004 by Muvdi,JJCCF’s mission is to provideemergency financial assistancefor children fighting cancer toensure access to basic humannecessities during their struggle.Muvdi founded theorganization as a tribute to heronly child, Jessica June EilerMuvdi, who lost her battle withleukemia in 2003.
