DRY SOUL SYNDROM ~ DSSDRY SOUL SYNDROM ~ DSSDRY SOUL SYNDROM ~ DSSDRY SOUL SYNDROM ~ DSS
Last week’s Gospel reading of Lazarus and the rich man got me thinking of what a dry soul is and what remedies there are to help a dry soul. This thought came from a television commercial about dry mouth. I realized the rich man in the Gospel not only suffered from dry mouth, he was in misery because his major ailment was dry soul syndrome (DSS). DSS is the direct response of not taking care of our souls. We do not nurture them, we do not feed them, we do not take time to help them grow. Our souls need attention. If they do not receive the necessary care they may end up drying up and becoming listless.
What do we have to do to ensure we do not suffer from DSS? Well, here are a few thoughts: 1. We must make a commitment to attend Mass on
at least a weekly basis. It is important that we never miss Liturgy. The Gift of Eucharist is an incredible healer for the soul, it is the very gift of Jesus himself. “If you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you will have no life in you.” ~ John 6.
2. We must be a people who are not afraid to go to our knees and pray. We need to realize that God is God and we are not ! ! ! All Christians must humble themselves before the giver of all gifts, the creator of all created, the Lord of Lords. As St. Paul said, “at the name of Jesus every knee should bend … And every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord.” ~ Philippians 2:10.
3. We need to read and reflect upon the Love Letter God has given to us: Scripture. Without a good grasp of Scripture our souls thirst for the living water that only God’s word can give. St. Jerome once said, “Ignorance of the Scripture IS ignorance of Christ.” We need to read the Bible. I always recommend that we all read at least one (1) chapter a day. Fr John Capuci of Burlington says, “A chapter a day keeps the devil a way.”
Because of what is said above, we have decided to offer, to each and every parishioner, a Bible. So after Masses this week and next, we will offer each of you a brand new Bible to take home. We hope that you will take time every day to read and reflect upon the Word and allow the Word to refresh, bring life, and prevent each and every one of us from having DSS.
Thank you for being the dynamic community that you are and for allowing the Love of Jesus to shine through you. God bless you, Fr. John M. Capuci
