by Marilyn Rosenthal, Ph.D. and Patrick Hwang, Ph.D.Native English speakers bring to the classroom ample vocabulary in English. Onaverage, kindergarten students start school with around 5000–wordreceptive/productive vocabularies. English as a second language learners arriveat school with significantly fewer receptive/productive vocabularies. In addition tohearing for the first time many of the sounds that English words contain, theyare also hearing many of the words for the first time. Unless those words areconnected to meaning, they are not words to the child; they are just meaninglesssound and noise. Phonics activities designed with the ESL learners in mind focuson meaning and target increases in vocabulary acquisition.DELTA ESL PHONICS is a comprehensive five–book phonics series designedspecifically for ESL students. Each student book presents various phonemicpatters through vivid and motivating full–color pictures using high–frequencyvocabulary geared specifically toward the needs of these young learners. Thesewords are then presented in simple structures using grammatical patternseasily understood by young ESL learners as opposed to the more difficultstructures and words generally used in native speaker phonics programs. DELTA ESL PHONICS can be used in ESL/EFL classes in large groups, smallgroups, in English immersion situations, in review and practice situations, incertain mainstream classes, and in reading labs or tutorials. The systematiccurriculum is carefully sequenced throughout the series, so teachers can have theoption of taking their students linearly through all five books or giving intensivepractice and review on various books in the series for students with special needs.
Book 4 presents double letter consonants. These consonant clusters or blends are
shown in a variety of combinations in initialword position (bl, cl, fl, br, cr, fr, gl, pl, sl, dr,pr, tr, sm, sn, st, sw, sh, ch, th, wh) and infinal word position (ng, nk, sh, ch, th). There is continued development in listening andreading discrimination, as well as, stories,
chants, puzzles, and fun activities. Sound patterns in words are recycled
from previous books.

ee, ea, oa, ow, ai, ay, oi, oy, ow, ou, oo, andthe –r controlled vowels—ir, er, ur, ar and
