I. PREFIX. A prefix is a word part that is added to the front of the base word (also called

the root word) to change its meaning. More than one prefix may mean the same thing

or have the same effect.

Examples: The prefixes dis- , non- and un- mean ‘not’ OR ‘the opposite of’

dis + approve = disapprove non + toxic = nontoxic

un + happy = unhappy

II SUFFIX: A suffix is added to the end of a root word to change its meaning.

III RHYME SCHEME:

A rhyme scheme is a pattern of rhyme that comes at the end of each verse or line in poetry.

In other words, it is the structure of end words of a verse or line that a poet needs to create

when writing a poem.

Some popular rhyme schemes:

Read aloud all these poems. Pay attention to the ending sounds to understand the rhyme

scheme in each.

1. Alternate rhyme: It is also known as ABAB rhyme scheme, it rhymes as

“ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH.”

3. ABCB scheme - The ending words of lines two (B) and four (B) rhyme with each other.

They are assigned the same letter (B) because they are "related" through rhyme.
