Shattuck-St. Mary’s Today

SS tudent athletes at Shattuck-St. Mary’s study hard and play hard.

It is this very combination of rigorous college-prep academics and exceptional athletic development that sets Shattuck-St. Mary’s apart from other schools and programs. At the heart of the School, is the belief that we are preparing young men and women for life beyond high school. This preparation is first and foremost – academic. The vast majority of our graduates are consistently admitted to their first-choice college choices. Once at college, our gradu-ates report that they are exceedingly well-prepared academically. Our Center of Excellence athletic programs are producing great results with a number of placements to exceptional colleges.

Founded in 1858, Shattuck-St. Mary’s is one of the oldest college preparatory schools in the Midwest. In 2011-12, our 409 students come from 37 states and 29 countries. With an average class size of 11, and a student to teacher ratio of 8.5 to 1, our pri-mary goal is to prepare each student not just for college but for a confident life beyond our Arch.

We seek students of above-average ability and achievement who are eager to take full advantage of the School’s academic program and broad range of extracurricular activities. Students can apply online at s-sm.org. For more information about SSM and the application process, please visit our website at s-sm.org or contact the Admissions Office at 800-421-2724.

Academics and Life at Shattuck-St. Mary’s

SCollege Advising and the Student Athlete

S tudent-athletes participating in our Centers of Excellence athletics at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School have the opportunity to benefit from working with coaches who have an extensive network of collegiate contacts. In addition, they work with college advisors who have significant experience working with the full spectrum of colleges and universities available in the United States.

Coaches and college advisors work together to help each student-athlete develop a potential list of colleges and universities with particular attention paid to the athletic/academic interface. Coaches assist student-athletes in identifying a range of schools appropriate for their particular skill level. And college advisors assist students in identifying a range of schools appropriate for a young person’s interests and academic preparation. Advisors assist with NCAA Clearinghouse registration, test registration, and application preparation. Our players also benefit from the past college coaching experience of many of our coaches as well as their vast network of contacts within the collegiate ranks. Working closely together, our coaches and counselors provide each player with the best college placement support possible.

SSM has more than 20 years of experience in working with student-athletes who seek to continue their athletic participation at the highest level possible during their college years. These student-athletes also pursue an academic career in preparation for graduate and/or professional school. Shattuck-St. Mary’s takes great pride in providing students excellent guidance from skilled professionals who have made working with motivated young people their life’s work.

Academics and Life at Shattuck-St. Mary’s Shattuck-St. Mary’s curriculum includes Advanced Placement courses in 12 distinct subject areas. The BioScience Program provides highly focused science students an opportunity to explore their interests by accessing Minnesota’s wide range of “medical alley” institutions. The Honors Program allows students to thrive and to accelerate their studies, and provides highly motivated students the opportunity to excel in areas of specialized interest. The Center for Academic Achievement pro-vides support, resources and instruction for students with mild learning differences. The rigorous and engaging Upper School Course curriculum prepares our students for entrance into some of the nation’s top college and universities.

Almost all of our faculty members live on campus, many working as dorm parents, providing a rewarding mentor relationship, insight and supervision to our boarding students. The small community of engaged individuals leads to strong, enduring friendships, fosters an environment of acceptance, and a true sense of shared experience. Our large population of international students, hailing from 29 countries, helps our school community develop a greater understanding of the world.

The Missouri Athletic Club presents the Hermann Trophy, a crystal soccer ball, to the top female and male players in NCAA Division I soccer, as chosen by NCAA Division I soccer coaches who are members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Bunbury was the third sophomore and the first University of Akron player to win the award. Bunbury was also named Player of the Year by Soccer America, Goal.com and the Mid-American Conference.

After his sophomore year, Bunbury was drafted by the Sporting Kansas City where he currently plays professionally in the MLS - Major League Soccer. In two seasons with Sporting Kansas City, Teal has scored 18 goals in 59 games. He helped to lead the 2011 team to a first place finish in the MLS Eastern Conference. His father, Alex, played for the Kansas City Wizards during a successful professional career and is a member of the Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame.

In reflecting on his selection to the U.S. National team and his time at SSM, Bunbury told the Faribault Daily News: “I feel like Tim Carter’s done a great thing there. He really helped me get to where I am. ... I feel like this will be a good thing and more people will look at Shattuck-St. Mary’s as a soccer school to get you to the next level.”

SSM HockeyBuilt in the heart of Minnesota, it was inevitable that Shattuck-St. Mary’s School would enjoy a long history of hockey on its campus. The first recorded official hockey team at Shattuck School banded together in 1925 to skate on a small pond in the area where Clapp Dormitory now stands.

In 1990, the School embarked on a visionary plan to create a hockey Center of Excellence. In 1996, the School fielded its first girls hockey team, and the top boys midget team skated to its very first National Championship tournament. Three short years later, in 1999, the Boys Prep team, led by Andy Murray, former Head Coach of the St. Louis Blues, kicked off what would become a tradition of excellence by winning its first Tier I Boys U18 National Championship title. The Boys Prep team has since won six more National Championships–in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008, and 2011. Also in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2011 the Girls Prep team capped its seasons as Tier I Women’s U19 National Champions. And, the Tier I Women’s U16 team won its first national title in 2010.

Today, SSM hockey program is made up of seven teams playing a seven-month schedule of 50-70 games per season. The two girls teams, one bantam team, and four midget teams practice daily on three campus ice rinks, and compete in games and tournaments around the United States and Canada. In 2011, SSM moved its bantam program to a single Tier I team.

As Sports Illustrated magazine put it, “Shattuck-St. Mary’s School is to high school hockey what Harvard is to law school.”

The Boys Prep team won the Tier 1 Boys U18 USA Hockey National Championship, capping a successful 45-6-3 season.

The Girls Prep team won the Tier 1 Women’s U19 USA Hockey National Championship following a 46-7-2 season.
