The portfolio binder contains documents demonstrating the student’s best ideas, written outputs, and accomplishments in various subjects for a particular term. Assuch, the portfolio may house collated quizzes, seatwork, hand outs, reflections, photos, and artwork.

The contents of the binder will vary according to their year level, as the youngones may have more artwork but less of reflections or essays. More than that, theportfolio is a manifestation of the student’s productivity, responsibility, industry, andexcellence. The way a student manages and values the portfolio is a reflection of his/her character.

However, portfolio assessment in SSIS extends to more than what is compiled in the binder. It goesbeyond the classroom grades that a student obtains as it is a system driven by outcomes or performance. Itensures the student’s demonstration of a particular knowledge and skill.

Although all subjects require performance based assessment, checkpoints are more rigid in core subjectsand ICT as the student has to demonstrate proficiency in English, Math, Science, ICT and Values. Portfolioassessment methodologies for students include recitation of hallmarks, journal writing, problem solving, experimentation, and conducting a research to name a few.

SSIS continues to fortify its programs that focus on strengthening studentachievement both in academics and values with the launching of the SponsorshipProgram.

WHAT IS SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM? It is one of the guidance and counselling ser-vices of the school. Aside from the Class Advisers and the Guidance Counsellor, astudent is assigned to a sponsor to further strengthen his/her support system.

A sponsor is a teacher, an officer, or a member of the staff with whom ahelping relationship can be established. A sponsor therefore assumes the role of afriend, a coach, a caregiver, a guide, an ardent supporter of a student, a constantmotivator, and as such, a valuable agent of the student’s growth and develop-ment.

WHAT ARE THE TOPICS DISCUSSED IN A SPONSORSHIP CHAT?A sponsor is expected to meet the students 2-3 times a year to tackle the following topics equitably in each Sponsor-ship Session:

1. Study habits (study schedule, time management, prioritization of tasks, study techniques, etc.)2. Practice of the Value of the Month/Week3. Practice of Good Manners and Social Graces4. Relationships (family, friends, classmates, teachers, staff, caregivers, etc.)5. Values and Virtues needed by the students

WHY IS SPONSORSHIP IMPORTANT? (Let’s hear from the students who have been through the Sponsorship Program)-So we can get close to the teachers. We want to be close to them so we can understand why they get angry atus.-In case we have problems and we don’t want to talk to others, we can always approach our sponsor.-We might go the wrong path and lose important choicesand chances.-Because my sponsor is like my second parent in school.-Without their help, we might not be successful in life.-For the teacher to know how each student feels.-If we have a failing grade, they can help us.

SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM DEEPENS TEACHER-STUDENT BONDING

CGS Promotes Self-DirectionClarifying One’s Values towards Self-Direc-

tion - this will be the focus of the Grade 9 Compre-hensive Growth Series (CGS) on September 13-14 atNonie’s Mountain Resort, Alitagtag, Batangas.

The seminar consists of different activities thatwill deepen their self-understanding and forgelasting relationships. As students who arediscovering their individuality and potentials, theGrade 9 will have a deeper understanding of thethings they value most in life, as these things willsteer them to the direction they want to go. Soon, they will go to college armed with academics andvalues excellence.

To help the students identify their inclinations andaptitude in different fields, the National Career Assess-ment Examination will be administered to Grade 9 stu-dents on September 11, 2013.

Purpose of the Test. The purpose of the test is tohelp students determine which courses they should studyin college and what sort of career they are best suitedfor. Like many standardized tests, the NCAE measuresstudents’ general scholastic knowledge. However, NCAEalso tests vocational aptitude, occupational preferencesand entrepreneurial skills.

Considerations. NCAE test results are only one partof the bigger picture in determining the best career fitfor a student. Students shouldn’t make major decisionsbased on NCAE results alone. Their entire school careeras well as their own goals and interests should beconsidered when deciding on a course or a career.

ON USING ONLINE RESOURCESWith the introduction of online resources like Moodle and Grammarly,

it is inevitable that kids would be using the internet at home to completethe school requirements. Here are some helpful tips that parents can discusswith their children.

The internet is a great resource for research for your child’s homeworkand coursework, unfortunately, however, it can be very easy and temptingto copy information straight from a website and pass it off as his or her ownwork. There are even many websites that offer essays and coursework forsale.

1. Children won’t learn simply by copying. Instead, teach them to useonline resources as a starting place and show them how to find themost credible, trustworthy, and appropriate websites – but only forresearch.

2. Explain to your children why user-generated content such as that foundon Wikipedia may not be completely reliable.

3. By copying, your child may also be breaking copyright laws, so alwayscheck for this information on the website they are using.
