“Within two days she had it all mapped out,” says DeVincenzo. “It was turned around really quick. Lee was blown away. When I called him, he told his band and crew and I could hear them whooping and hollering in the background.” A good location on short notice was the main challenge. “We tried to find the right fit in each market,” says DeVincenzo. “Timing was an issue, because some venues where we’d normally play weren’t available, so we had to make do with a smaller club.” “If we had a day off, we figured out where to do a show at a venue in a town that we were going through already,” adds Brice. “There was a little bit of travel that wasn’t planned, a couple of flights. But it really worked out.” Brice’s production was also a consideration. “We’re going to have to do a couple of these shows stripped-down,” says DeVincenzo. “Some of them are bars we played five years ago that we’ve outgrown. But we’ll come back in and do a more intimate show – which Lee loves doing anyway.” Five years ago, Brice might have been worried about filling those bars. Now, when he played the 500-capacity Boot Hill in Gillette, WY Aug. 4, Brice says it was “shoulder to shoulder, all the way to the back.” Brice and his team already tour an average of 180 dates a year, so adding more dates means more time away from their families. But he says playing these smaller venues has brought more than just a feather in his cap. “These shows have ended up being very impactful,” says Brice. “I didn’t even think about that when we started planning to do this. Every show matters. But sometimes, these places we’re playing, you might not have ever gone there. So when you do, [the fans] are so appreciative. Those shows have been extra special. They’re treating us like they got a gift. But we feel like they’ve given us a gift.” The final present comes well before Christmas – Nov. 15 at Brewhouse Music & Grill in Rome, GA will be the 50th state of the year for Brice, his band and crew. All of which begs the question:

is this a one-time thing or will he repeat it? “You never know,” he says. “I know we’re going back to Hawaii and I think I’m going back to Alaska – and that’s a big part of it. Obviously I want to be home more and spend time with my boys, because I miss them so much. This has added some time

away from home. That’s the only part that sucks. But the rest of it – yeah, we want to do it again and again. It’s really cool.” –Wendy Newcomer

TJ Osborne of EMI Nashville’s Brothers Osborne puts an industry spin on the artist interview:1. George Strait, RFK Stadium, Washington: It was probably 15 years ago and the first big concert I went to. The artists on the bill blew my mind: the Dixie Chicks, Tim McGraw, Jo Dee Messina, Strait and so many more. It was inspirational to me as a

young guy and I just wanted to be a part of something like that.2. Vince Gill, Hank Williams, Sr., Merle Haggard, Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen: Their songs were always very honest and true. And they could say so much with so little because their voices were speaking just as much as the words themselves. Those guys represent the high bar for me; they’re as good as it gets.3. Bruce Springsteen, Nebraska: It’s referenced a lot but for good reason. It’s as stripped down as it gets. He’s out of tune, playing the wrong chords, but it’s perfect. I listen to that album when I’m in an airport because it calms me down amid all the hustle and bustle. I zone out listening to The Boss!4. David Bowie, Best Of Bowie: In my opinion, he’s in the same category as Hank Williams, Sr. and Merle Haggard. You can play it anywhere at anytime for anybody and it works.5. Darrell Scott, Theatre Of The Unheard: My brother and I both wore it out and it was a big, life-changing album for us. Again, his songwriting goes back to a really honest place. He’s one of those guys who can say or sing something that if you haven’t experienced, you still understand. Not many people have that kind of talent.• An album you played incessantly: Merle Haggard, A Tribute To The Best Damn Fiddle Player In The World (Or, My Salute To Bob Wills). First of all, that’s the best possible album title. It’s so cool and timeless. Great lyrics, great performances. When Merle hits a note, it hits you just like Frank Sinatra would. So smooth; it just gets inside your soul.• An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: I’m not saying Bon Iver aren’t talented and I totally get why someone would like it. But every time I listen I want it to stop. It makes me more drowsy than NyQuil. • Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: I like pop music and Katy Perry. You can hate me for it, but I’m not gonna act too cool for school.

Here’s a sample exchange as Geofferies finds himself delayed making a pick:Sue: I have a dinner. I’m hungry – let’s move along.Charlie: It’s 5:30, Sue. Charlie: The format is going to be out of style by the time this is done.Bruce: Then your clothes will finally match the music.Charlie: Who is feeding you these lines? You’re not quick enough for any of this.

Brook: Thank God. I’ve already taken a pole dancing class, snapped nudies to Lindy and baked a pan of brownies.Charlie: Wow. Can I have the picture? Scratch that – a brownie?Scott: You want the picture.Bruce: Can I get a picture of the brownies?Charlie: See there is no f’n way you’re that funny. Who is sitting there?Bruce: I’m funny, Charlie. You just don’t remember. BTW – It was cool Willard Scott wished you a happy birthday last week on the Today show.Sue: I’m going to need laced brownies to get through the rest of this. Kimberly, Neil and Reid Perry from Republic Nashville’s The Band Perry put an industry spin on the artist interview: KP: We grew up listening to WKNN/Biloxi, MS. Our uncle Dayn Perry was an overnight DJ. We’d always have K99 parties at my grandmother’s house. We’d make cookies and she’d let us stay up late to hear him. One

time he gave us a shoutout and we were very excited about that. NP: Our worst memory from our radio tour was so bad, we gave it a title: “The Blood Bath of San Jose.” We played “Hip To My Heart” in the KRTY conference room. As we were leaving they said, “In about 30 minutes we’re going to play the song and have people call in and tell us what they think.” We were with our new regional at the time – Lois Lewis – listening in the car. The calls started rolling in and two of the phrases I remember are, “Her voice sounds like a dying cat” and “She’s the country Britney Spears.” KP: We could tell our buddies at the station were like, “Well, that’s enough calls for now...” Lois kept going, “Passion is good. Passion on any level!” KP: I would love to have dinner with our grandfather, who passed away a few years ago. When I was a little girl he’d take me for McDonald’s pancakes every Saturday morning. RP: I would love to have Indian food with Jerry Seinfeld. He created one of the best TV shows ever. NP: I’d have Indian food with Ryan Gosling, because a lot of people say I look like him. [Kimberly and Reid start laughing.] Everyone says it! RP: My least favorite interview question is, “What’s it like being in a band with your brother and sister?” NP: And the answer is, “It’s awesome” – but that’s my least favorite question too. KP: My last impulse buy was a ring. We’re pretty energetic performers and I never wear my wedding ring because I’m scared I’m going to sling it off. So I recently bought a little band to wear onstage. NP: That was a big impulse buy. KP: I informed my husband after the purchase – which is always the safest thing to do.

Post-draft analysis finds several issues. “Charlie Cook ticked me off (as he’s been doing for nearly two decades) because Carrie was going to be my first round pick,” Logan says. “He also picked Old Dominion as Group and they would have been a great choice for Rookie. “The label choices were hard,” he continues. “I thought about taking [Curb’s] Ryan Dokke because after the years we spent together in Charlotte, I am used to him letting me down. And I’m a little surprised no one drafted [BMLG’s] Scott Borchetta. He was my first choice as reality TV star, but then I realized there wasn’t a category for that.” Cook calls his lineup “a record company’s dream come true. A great administrative staff and kick-butt artists who will probably set sales records in the next 12 months. Already my girl Carrie is a record breaker with this single.” Not so fast, old man. “I’m confident I have a team that will be a strong contender and definitely give Charlie a run for his money, even if it means I’m passing him on his motorized cart from the outside lane,” Stephens says. Most owners tab Team Geoffries as being particularly strong. “I think we left some big names on the table,” Geofferies says. “None of them are weak but Bruce’s list looks to have a big year. Solid picks.” Cook adds, “No comment on the weakest except to say Bruce Logan will probably mismanage his squad.” Wilson describes her team as, “Talented newcomers, seasoned veterans, and soon to be the next superstars led by a label exec and VPP to corner all sections of the market.” As for the overall experience, Lindy says, “I’m scarred to the degree that only absolute victory will assuage. We should do this every week!” Stephens says, “There might be brownies in the mail to a few people and I’m pissed I didn’t get invited to senior night at the buffet with Wilson and Cook!” The latter grumps, “Don’t ever ask me to do this again.”
