Ireceived a very early text on

July 9, 2012 inorming me oTita Cholengs passing away. The

text hit me with a powerul punch!Though Tita Choleng was 91 at herpassing, I somehow believed her tobe immortal. Even when I passed onthe inormation I could not say inwords that Tita Choleng had passedaway. The ew riends I called hadto guess as I choked in my message

delivery.I met Tita Choleng in 1994when she was invited to the SSAFIboard to fll her sisters unfnisheddirectors term. She looked serious;she was logical & organized (Shewas a practicing Chemist); rugal (AsTreasurer, all expenses & fnancialrequisitions had to be thoroughlyexplained); a Scholastican through& through; so very Benedictine; butmost o all a very dear, sweet riend

who blended with senior and youngalumnae.

We were two peas in a pod: TitaCholeng was treasurer; I was assistanttreasurer. I did not have much to do;she did it all.

We shared a common linksince her nephews and nieces weremy riends, too. Her nephews andnieces were her very special peoplenext to her brother and sisters.

The two o us shared stories, and jokes thru text. It took some timebeore she fnally learned how toread text messages in text languageand would complain i I did not text

jokes.Every year she made sure I had

a small basket o lansones and twoatis rom her garden. I still keep thenote that came with her frst atis git.It said Your share from my tree Tita

Choleng.I had the privilege o beinginvited or merienda to her home aew times. I visited her twice whenshe was not well. She would alwayssay that I should not worry or botherover her being sick.

At Christmas time I wouldhave a small pot o tasty bee cubeswith castaas. She would save upchocolates or me i I came late orour monthly SSAFI meetings.

When I would drive her home

ater late night SSAFI events, TitaCholengs logic & organizational skillwould kick in with street direction.I would insist that I knew whereshe lived, and how to drive to herhome.

I had actually asked her to teacha class in Arts & Sciences so she couldobserve personally contemporarystudents at their lessons. I gave herthe choice o a Science subject,

or a Math class or one in QualityAssurance. Unortunately, we nevegot to implement this project. Iwould have been un to see howTita Choleng and her students would

have adapted to each other. Her 90th birthday was a grandaair, or ater all, how many canclaim to reach 90 years o age ingood health, with an inquisitive mindworking two jobs and comortablywell o? Still, she spent party timeseeing to it that all her guests werecomortable, well served and weled.

I will miss Tita Choleng verymuch. Both prudent and wise, we

had a riendship that crossed, theage barrier, but most o all my 91-year-old riend always wanted toknow more and her spirit was alwayswilling to try the unexplored. TitaCholeng was very much loved andappreciated by the SSAFI members!

P.S. - Tita Choleng, I learned welrom you the task o being an efcientreasurer. Your spirit lives on!

SSAFIs call or class reps meet-ing.I heeded the call to meet, and

Bangs request to wear something blueto what I thought was an honest-to-goodness meeting. Because our mori-bund and decimated AB 1953 classwould be Diamond Jubilarians nexthomecoming and I wanted to knowhow we would present a musicalnumber to the Scholastican audiencewhen we are only six survivors lethere.

On arriving, frst a beso or the

new SSAFI Moderator, Sr. Angelica. In my mind, poor Sister, shell haveto contend with board members whocould make emotions rule over reasonin sensitive issues during the meeting.Well, what or is a moderator? Then, pleasant surprise, Sister Mary JohnManansan! Me: Sister, I read the itemabout your sojourn in Scotland andIreland. Do they still speak Gaelicthere? She: did you read those aboutRussia, Ionia and other places?

She was the opener o the so-called meeting where she revealedthat the Benedictine Sisters are estab-lishing a hospital or the poorest othe poor in some God-orsaken placein Northern Samar. She is, o course,spear-heading it.

In their spade work, she also re-vealed miracles that could only be...yes, miracles. Without a title to a pieceo land in the town o Catarman, Sa-mar, they looked or a site there. Alandowner, learning o their mission, donated 3 hectares or the purpose. But there were other problems, ore-

most among which was money or theconstruction o the hospital. The coun-try president o Hyundai Asia readabout the Most Inuential Women inthe World. Included in the honour-able list were Hillary Clinton, OprahWhitney and Sister Mary John Manan-san, OSB, among others. She calledor Sister to her ofce and made out acompany pledge to donate. It turnedout that Madam President is a Scholas-tican. A scholar in our school, too poorthen to have an adequate allowance, she would hang around the kitchen o

the manongs or a cup o hot soup! She handed Sister a company pledgeto donate to her project, but to Sisters

dismay, the pledge did not state theamount. So she asked Atty. Lorna (Ka-punan, I suppose) or an explanation.Because, attorney said, the amountwould depend on the entire cost o thehospital construction. I that were saidto me, I would have staggered out othe Hyundai Philippines ofces in pureelation!

Still, money was needed or 2 mo-bile clinics cum ambulances to reachthe ar-o places accessible by motor-ized transport. Where to get the sub-stantial amount? An unsolicited dona-

tion o more than a hundred thousandEuros came rom a generous French-man. The vehicles are now in the St.Scho motor pool.

Finally, we got to the make-upportion o the aternoon. Loyan askedor two volunteers or the demonstra-tion by LOreal make-up artists. Di-fdently I stood up to volunteer. Withsome embarrassment over my audacity,I told my young audience that I wantedthem to witness another miracle in thereversal o my looks rom an artiact o81 to a rereshing 18.

First, the cleaning. My artist musthave used something with alcohol con-tent. I could smell and eel it. My heartstarted beating erratically as an allergicreaction to alcohol. I thought to my-sel that i I conked out right there andthen because o make-up, my daugh-ter would never orgive me or embar-rassing her at my wake! So, unknownto them, I popped in a Claritin tabletand in a minute or two the allergy was

gone. On with the process.First, apply with a moist sponge

or by fnger the primer, then the oundation. Always see to it that your oun-dation and powder match the color o

your neck to avoid that mask look. Follow it with the blush on, lipstick thaharmonized with your blush on, thenthe light brown eye shadow or themorning look and eye liner. Mascarato open the eyes i they are quite smaland clipped artifcial eyelashes gluedonly on the middle o your own lash-es. All with the use o special brushesI skipped the artifcial lashes. Howmuch are the products? Visit their outlets.

While no miracle happened onmy ace, I enjoyed the whole experi-

ence. With a minute o ame, the twomodels posed or pictures at right, leand other angles.

We did not go home emptyhanded. Each attendee was given sam-ple tubes o LOreal products. SSAFserved a yummy merienda preparedby our HRM students who are onpracticum at the Friedenshaus, nowoperational as a hotel and restauranwholly owned by St. Scho. This musbe its answer to La Salles nearby StBenilde. And long-stemmed red rosesor each lady. Lastly, a special bonus

o comedy songs and acts by our ownMitch Valdes.

So next time you answer a SSAFcall or a meeting, dont be just loyato our school. Have a little ulterior motive and think o the loot available oryou. I you cant resist instant gratifcation, you can enjoy it there. I you aremore reined in, wait till you get homeSome shared their LOreal tubes withtheir daughters.
