PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents, In today's newsletter you will find a full list of the grade 6 leadership roles. To hold a leadership position at SSPP is a grand task. The expectations are high, as last year's Year 6’s did a stellar job! Already teachers are being approached by various leaders wanting to discuss ideas and innovations for 2018. And of course, we too are planning to provide as many opportunities for personal growth and service too. I hope the Year 6 leaders find fulfillment over the course of 2018.

The staff have been very focussed ensuring the wellbeing of all students in their care as we settle into our new classes. Next Monday we will be holding our Meet & Greet interviews. Booking details were sent home last Friday. If you need any assistance making your booking don't hesitate to phone or call into the office. If you are not able to attend on Monday, please contact your child’s teacher to make another time. School Review At present, we are busy preparing for our School Review which will be conducted in early term 2. Considerable time is being spent by the Leadership Team and staff in preparing for this. There are two aspects to our review. The first is with the VRQA - Victorian Registrations and Qualifications Authority. The second is with Catholic Education Melbourne & ACER (Australian Council of Educational Research) On both occasions our school will host assessors who will focus on various aspects of our school functioning and governance. They both provide feedback and directions for future school improvement. As a professional educator it is a very invigorating and stimulating process to go through. Every Victorian school undergoes a review process such as this every 4 years. Gardening News Today we have begun a new initiative working with the Manningham Council on an intergenerational gardening project. Each fortnight the seniors club will hold the garden talk at the school, and then spend time tending to the garden beds along the eastern side of our school with the children. This week Grade 2 will venture out for the first session. Over the weekend a very committed bunch of CEG members gathered to ensure the garden beds had enough soil etc. ready for today's session. Thank you very much to those people, your support for our school is much appreciated! Information Coming Home A number of forms will be in your child's bag today. Please look for two notices and an envelope. Please respond to these promptly.

Class Rep System Our class rep system is up and running for 2018. Thank you Anna O’Toole for all your assistance in coordinating this. If you haven't received anything from your class rep by now, it probably means you haven't given permission. Please contact the office so that this can be rectified. Congratulations During the last week of 2017 Kristina Stephanou and now fiance Shaune announced their engage-ment. We wish them all the best as they prepare for their wedding in October 2019. We welcome our coach Dennis Lazar from Athletics Australia for these sessions and are grateful for the Sporting Schools grant which has allowed our school to access this program. SCHOOL NEWS

Shrove (Pancake) Tuesday Last night Peter Lynch led our staff in reflection regarding the Season on Lent. Did you know that Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the Lenten Season? Lent ends on Palm Sunday, one week before Easter Sunday. Historically Shrove Tuesday was the opportunity for people to “empty out their cupboards” in preparation for a period of fasting during Lent. While we know longer fast, the tradition of Pancake Tuesday continues! Next Tuesday the 13th February the children are invited to bring along a gold coin and have a pancake or 2 for morning tea. Our parent reps will be cooking and serving the pancakes. Details have been sent home already via the parent reps. All money collected will be donated to Caritas Australia. “Caritas Australia is part of a global network that spans over 200 countries and territories. For over 110 years, Caritas has worked towards the creation of a just world. In 1964, Caritas began in Australia. A Catholic Agency for International Aid and Development, Caritas is Latin for love + compassion – two qualities which are central to our work.” Caritas Australia’s annual Lenten fundraising and awareness-raising appeal, Project Compassion brings thousands of Australians together in solidarity with the world's poor to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity.

Language Immersion in the Library News Ciao tutti ! Come stai? Hello everyone! How are you? This year our school library will be open Tuesday mornings from 8.30am. Please come and read together, play chess or cards, draw or write. The library will also be open on Wednesday lunchtime from 1.10pm. Looking forward to seeing you sometime soon. Find your Treasure in the library! Claudia Bortolin and Anna Mazzone

SCHOOL NEWS

OUT OF SCHOOL HOURS NEWS We had a fun first week back and it was great to see all the children again. They were all full of lots of news from their holidays. Educators for 2018 Stacey Murphy - Monday, Wednesday and every second Friday (even weeks) before and after care. Sandra Wood - Thursday before school care, Tuesday and Thursday and every second Friday (odd weeks) after care. Lorraine Rodenberg - Monday, Wednesday and every second Friday (even weeks) after care. Karen Hartmeier - Tuesday and Thursday and every second Friday (odd weeks) after care. Sarah Fayd - Tuesday before school care. Lilly Pallotta - Relief staff member. Thank you to those families that have notified us in regards to the days you require this year. It was very helpful to know when to expect your child/ren. Please remember to notify us if your child/ren will not be in. We will go looking for them at the school if we have not been informed. A little reminder at the start of the year of a couple of things:

• Please sign in/out all of your children do not do one sign in or out across all of your children. • If your child is not in and we have not notified you will be charged. Please ensure at least 24 hours notice is given. • If your child is sick or left school sick you will not be charged. This also applies if you’re sick and not at work or a sibling is sick and you’re not at work.

Accounts will be sent out this week, along with a separate email that contains an enrolment form for 2018. It is essential that ALL areas of the form are completed. If not we will not be meeting regulations. I know it's very repetitive but it must be done.

Have a great week! Stacey and the OSHC Team
