ALUMNI NEWSLETTER

April 2017 Issue

Reunion will be canceled this summer We regret to inform our alumni that our multi-class reunion, which was slated to take place this June will be canceled.

Our Advancement & Marketing Director Sarah Seweryniak will be expecting her first child with her husband early this

summer. Despite having “help wanted” in the parish bulletin, in the alumni newsletter and via the web, we were unable

to secure any volunteers that could help run the event.

Please stay tuned, we certainly look forward to having events happen in the near future. We just concluded a great

alumni event in February, our Buffalo Wild Wings Dine Out. Photos are included in this newsletter.

Alumni Spotlight Celebrating 2007 Graduate Samantha Maggio

In this edition we celebrate 2007 graduate, Samantha Maggio. She has had a

lot of professional and personal growth within the last year. We’d also like to

congratulate her on her recent engagement to fiancé’ Randy.

Q: Tell us a little about what path you took for your bachelors degree and master's...your schools and majors A: I went to Le Moyne College for my BS and Syracuse University for my MS. I completed an engineering program that allowed me to take engineering classes at Syracuse University while I was an undergraduate student at Le Moyne College. This allowed me to have automatic acceptance into SU's graduate program for chemical engineering, as well as to complete all of my engineering pre-requisites while doing my undergraduate studies. My BS is in Chemistry (with minors in Mathematics and Philosophy) and my MS is in Chemical Engineering.

Q: What is you current position and where are you presently working.?

A: I am currently working at Anoplate Corporation in Syracuse, NY as a Process Engineer. I interned at Anoplate in their lab during the summer before my last semester of graduate school. They then asked me to continue in the lab part time while I finished my Masters. Prior to my graduating, I was offered a Process Engineer position and began working the week after I graduated.

Q: How has your education at SSPP shaped who you are personally and professionally? A: My education at SSPP provided me a learning foundation. During my time at SSPP, I learned valuable study and organizational skills that I still employ in my career today. These skills are what helped me to excel in high school, undergraduate college, and graduate school. Specifically, Mrs. Sellar's and Mrs. Cole's classes stick out to me the most in helping to develop this valuable skill set. I also cannot forget my foundation in math skills (ever important to an engineer) that began when I was in 5th grade! I also think that SSPP forced me to step out of my comfort zone, assisting in my development of interpersonal skills which I currently exhibit in my networking skills. I remember Mrs. Pallante assigning us a project where I had to choose a career and interview someone currently in the field. I chose a network personality and interviewed Brian DeMay of Star 102.5. At the time, this was the most nerve-racking thing I had ever done. Looking back, it forced me to step outside of my comfort zone and helped me become the confident and well spoken person I am today.

Q: How has that also shaped what you wanted to study for college? A: As I said before, I learned that I loved math at SSPP. I specifically remember learning algebra in 8th grade with Mrs. Cole. The reason that I studied engineering was because math was always my favorite subject from the time I was in 5th grade.

Q: What are some values and lesson you felt your learned while here at SSPP? A: I learned to be a leader and team player at SSPP. I think this is a very valuable skill as I am able to step up and lead a project in my current job, but I am also cognizant of how I treat my team. A successful team stems from a successful and respectful leader. These are all skills that I learned at SSPP.

Q: What advice would you give for an eighth grader as they graduate from their final year at SSPP? A: My advice would be to take every opportunity that is offered. High school is a time for growth and learning. You won't know what you like (or what you excel at) if you don't take every opportunity to broaden your horizons and become a more well rounded person. Don't be afraid of failing- it's inevitable to know what you're good at! I would also suggest getting a part time job of some sort. High school is the most important time in your life to develop a good work ethic and what better way to do that than an actual job! Plus you'll make friends that last a life time (I still am in touch with people from my part time job when I was 15!). .

Q: What are your hopes for the future as you continue to flourish in your personal and professional life? A: My goals for the future include exceling in my current career and eventually going back to school for an MBA. I would like to one day move into a management position and an MBA would help me to achieve that. I am also engaged currently so I am looking forward to a happy and fulfilling life with my fiancé.

What’s happening in school today ….

Catholic Schools Week

We had so many fun activities going on during Catholic Schools Week! Below are a few snap shots

from Pajama Day, our school service project and the 8th Grade vs Faculty Volleyball Game!

An amazing and successful Art Show!

We had a refreshment area for our students and families.

They got to make their own edible works of art with our

cookie station!

Sr. Carol Cimino, Superintendent of Catholic School, stopped in

to visit during the art show. As you can see from her expression

when she walked in, she was so amazed by the talent of our

students.
