Totals Per Site Recovery Manager Pair*
[ABR] [VR]
Protected VMs 1500 500
VMs per Protection Group 500 500
Protection Groups per Recovery Plan 250 250
Total Recovery Plans 250 250
Concurrent Plan Operations 10 10
*total in pairing, not per site
site is now the protected site. The reprotect also flip-
flops any IP customizations you may have configured.
Last thing it does is start replication.
Array-Based Replication (ABR) Sizing
• EMC® RecoverPoint Appliance - Journal LUN > 20%
• Usable datastore size x % RoC (daily Rate of Change)
x # of days = Journal size
• Example: 10TB datastore, 6% RoC, 7 day Site Recovery
Manager test: 10TB x 6% x 7 days = 4.2TB journal space
• NetApp®
• Minimum 20% for Snapshot reserve
• Requires FlexClone® and SnapMirror® license
VMware vSphere® Replication [VR]
• Replication at the VM host level
• More for SMB use
• One VR appliance per vCenter (contains management
server and first VR server)
• Can deploy nine additional VR servers
• VR management server can manage up to 500 VMs
• VR max disk size of 2032GB
Networking
• No IP changing within the guest requires extending
VLANs or creating mirrored network segments
• Use Site Recovery Manager’s GUI to set protected and
recovery site IP configuration on a per-VM basis
• Use Site Recovery Manager’s dr-ip-customizer.exe to
export/import CSV of IP configurations at the Site
Recovery Manager level
Third-Party Certificate Requirements
• commonName (CN) = srm
• subjectAltName = fqdn.of.srm.server
• extendedKeyUsage = serverAuth, clientAuth
Site Recovery Manager Functions
Test – Non-disruptive function which powers on VMs at
the recovery site without taking the protected site offline
to test the functionality of Site Recovery Manager. Utilizes
a snapshot or clone of the target side storage to present
to the hosts. Replicated data from the source site wil l be
queued until test is complete, ensuring adequate storage
space to run a test. You have the option to run a storage
sync prior to powering on test VMs to get latest data
possible.
Cleanup – Completion function to end the test.
Destroys/deletes the storage snapshot and erases all
changed data at the recovery site. No changes to the
test VMs are saved.
Recovery – Actual disaster recovery function. In “planned”
mode, syncs storage, shuts down VMs, removes storage
from hosts and sets as read-only, performs another sync.
If you have suspended hosts at the recovery site, Site
Recovery Manager can bring them online. Also, if you’re
running dev/QC/staging VMs at the recovery site, Site
Recovery Manager can suspend those VMs so no data
is lost. Site Recovery Manager then sets the target-side
storage as read-write and presents the storage to the
hosts, imports the VMs and powers them on. In a disaster,Site Recovery Manager will still try to sync storage and
gracefully shutdown the VMs, but understands to continue
upon failure of those steps. If the recovery is a fail-back
function and you had dev/QC/staging VMs suspended,
Site Recovery Manager will resume those VMs.
Reprotect – Function to enable fail-back. The reprotect
sets up storage replication back the other direction. It also
reconfigures the Site Recovery Manager pairing to set the
current vCenter as the protected site and the old source
