2015 Computing Aging
OutdatedCurrent
• Laptops will increase in proportion to desktops
• Tablets still not mature enough to replace a PC or Laptop
• Apple systems:• Require approximately twice the support time PCs do• Do not integrate well into centralized IT management• Will always be a need for some Apple systems where
PC cannot do the job• Many people want Apples because it is there personal
preference, not because of student teaching needs
Observations
• Critical IT Investments• Improving network / internet speed/capacity• Computing security
• District Major Software Moving to the Cloud• Makes the distinction between computing platforms
irrelevant• Apple office cloud applications (iCloud) work on all
hardware platforms• i.e. NeoGov, TurnItIn, Student Application System, New On-
Line Learning Management System by Chancellor’s Office coming
Considerations
• New PC Desktops or Laptops for all faculty and staff, only exceptions will be for educational pedagogical needs, i.e. Apple application development.
• PC and Apple purchases will be base models.
• Departments must fund all costs above the base models.
• Previous use of a Mac, not a reason for getting a new Mac
• All exceptions to a standard PC Desktop or Laptop will require an ITG appeal.
Recommendation
