There have been many allegations against Narendra Modi

but corruption was never one of them. On what basis did

Leader of Opposition Shaktisinh Gohil allege a link between

the Gujarat chief minister and the Adani Group?

Modi allowed industrialists to loot the state’s naturalresources. In the past five years, nearly 2,200 hectares offorest land and over 104 crore square metres have been al-lotted to industries, some of them for as low as 1 per sq m.

But isn’t that how most states promote industries?

If anyone wants to open an industry, they make invest-

ments. They should not be given land on charity. For 1, youcan’t purchase anything. Not even a toffee. But Modi is al-lotting land for 1 (per sq m) to the Adani Group. And theyhave been reselling the same land for 2,500- 8,000 (per sqm). Modi has allotted 80 hectares at a token rate of 1 toLarsen & Toubro. With so many industries, one can imaginewhat is happening to Gujarat’s natural resources.

Why target just one industrial group like the Adanis?

I’m not just talking about Adani Group. Modi has given landto L&T, Rahejas, DLF and Satyam. He has given forest land toEssar as well. We have submitted the list to the Assembly. We are not targeting just the Adanis. They are only one ofthe beneficiaries. In 2009-10, the total agricultural produc-tion of Gujarat was 32,000 crore. The same year, the Tatasreceived benefits to the tune of 33,000 crore.

About 55 percent of our population depends on agricul-ture. It is a frightful situation. Why is such charity given tobig industrialists? If Modi wants to give out doles, it can begiven to families living below the poverty line.

About 45 percent of children in Gujarat are malnour-ished. The India Human Development Report, 2011, pointsout that the state fares the worst in terms of overall hungerand malnutrition in the country. The Planning Commissionhas given a presentation to the chief minister and advisedhim to invest in health and education. But he is not interest-ed in improving the human development status of the people in the state.

The anti-Modi rhetoric calling him a dictator still persists.

You even gave a call to save democracy in Gujarat. But at the

end of the day, isn’t Modi an elected leader?

Till December 2012, Modi has the right to rule and we haveno objection to it. But we have the right to oppose withinthe Vidhan Sabha. We are the constitutionally elected Op-position party. The Constitution recognises the Oppositionand the Leader of the Opposition. But in Gujarat, they (theModi administration) have a design to keep the Oppositionout of the Vidhan Sabha. This is a very bad thing for democ-racy. Every time, they suspend the Opposition members bybringing a majority resolution. This time, they have sus-pended even the Leader of the Opposition. Our democracyis in danger. The Opposition is not allowed to speak withinor outside the House. All the Sadbhavana programmes ofthe chief minister are being organised by the state adminis-tration. The government machinery is gathering crowdsand providing state transport buses for such programmes.District Collectors and SPs are acting as event managers.

Modi was always targeted for his handling of the 2002

Godhra riots. Has the Opposition realised that he has

benefited more from such attacks?

Modi probably gained in the short-term, but in the longrun, no murderer can benefit from such an act. He managedto polarise the people but now everybody has recognisedhis true identity. Thousands of people are in jail, thousandsof others were killed. The only beneficiary is Modi here asboth the attackers and victims are suffering.

critical question? Right now, we are movingdangerously into a confrontationalist situa-tion — with both sides unable to talk to each other. The government and the atomicenergy establishment seem totally unwillingto admit that there are some grounds to reconsider and review! There is an urgentneed for all sides to sit across the table anddiscuss a way ahead which takes on boardthe valid evidence of the many problems facing nuclear energy and the huge potentialof solar and other renewables.

TSUNAMIC ERRORRefer to ‘If tsunami strikes, chances ofdamage are very low in Koodankulam,’ byG Vishnu, 17 March.

I appreciate your interview with SS Bajaj. Itis curious that Bajaj presented a 4m-tsunamias the ‘worst case scenario’, when in the20th century alone there have beentsunamis in the range of 10, 12, 14, 20 metres.Historical records aest to tsunamis of morethan 30m in Japan, just 400 years ago, andin 1771, 1896, and 1993; in Krakatoa in 1883;15m in Lisbon in 1755, 11m in Hilo in 1960.The recent Indian Ocean tsunami surged asmuch as 33 metres, making it the highestrecorded earthquake-generated tsunami. There was a 100m tsunami in Japan in 1791and a whopping 524m megatsunami in theLituya Bay of Alaska just recently in 1958.Regarding nuclear safety in general, engineerA Stanley Thompson, whose 25-year-studyof nuclear safety was suppressed from pub-lication by the US. Atomic EnergyCommission, came to the conclusion that itis impossible to construct a fool-proof reac-tor due to the inherent instability of nuclear

SACK SETBACKRefer to ‘How Maya Lost the Plot?’ byBrijesh Pandey, 17 March.

Loved your article. Wanted to point out thatall the ministers she sacked, with the sole exception of Babu Ram Kushwaha, hailedfrom the three upper caste communities —Brahmins, Rajputs and Baniyas. This led to amajor vote drain from these sections and alsoinduced a fear of Behenji reverting to herTilak Tarazu aur Talwar, inko maaro rhetoric. This hysteria benefited SP. I think it shouldhave been mentioned in your article. Thanksfor the wonderful insight.

Thanks Ramana for an outstanding piece ofwriting. Thanks TEHELKA, for carrying it. Iwonder if it isn’t about time TEHELKA joinedhands with a number of those crying hoarsefor the DAE, NPCIL, and the PMO to simplypause, and say let’s discuss the issue, to helpinitiate a robust national debate around this

No one, except some in the Congress, expected Rahul tomake inroads in the UP Assembly polls. With theemergence of regional parties in several states, will thenext Lok Sabha be an aggregate of Vidhan Sabhas? TheCongress’ only hope is to present a mass-friendly Budgetnow and make the most of the next two years.

Akhilesh Yadav is well-educated, practicaland a down to earth man. I hope power doesnot go to his head! To prove his vision of acorruption-free India, he has to start by mak-ing UP crime-free.

BURYING THE PAST DOESNOT JUSTICE SERVERefer to ‘Ten Years of Resistance’, 10March.

I have been a reader of TEHELKA for about ayear now. I appreciate your perspective andrelatively unbiased reporting. But it appearsthat one event — the Gujarat riots — dom-inates your magazine. Having lived in southIndia, I have never been witness to any car-nage of this or lesser proportion. I wouldconsider three aspects as priority — provid-ing relief for the victims, investing inpractices for prevention and bringing the

culprits to book. What is the media’s respon-sibility? By continuing to focus on theabsence of justice, have you achieved anything? You are likely to do more by offer-ing solutions for the future. TEHELKA does notneed to prove its secular credentials. Likemost secularists, you run the risk of alienat-ing the majority that is equally secular butchooses not to wear it on its sleeve.

R KAILASNATH, ON EMAIL

It’s sad and remorseful that the Indian Statehas not been able to provide justice to thehapless victims — not Muslims or Hindusbut Indians. Kudos to the brave fighters risk-ing personal comfort and security in order tomete out due punishment to those guilty oforchestrated hate-crimes with unparalleledbrutality post-Partition.

MAHENDRA BW, ON EMAIL

Thank you for your fair and balanced reporting. Could you please let officer RBSreekumar know that as a Malayali, I am veryproud of him. I have shared the article withmy son in Chicago amid talks of the need formitigating internal biases and being fair allthe time towards all people. RB Sreekumar isan example of that.

SHAH JAHAN, ON EMAIL

The cover story on Gujarat 2002 leaves onewith mixed feelings — rage against commu-nalism of the highest order practised by theassociates of the RSS ie VHP, Bajrang Dal, andBJP, and admiration bordering on pride thatthere are people like Teesta, Javed, Mukul, Nirjari, Girish, Sreekumar, Sohel and manyothers, not forgeing the helpless riot victims who have held their ground in theface of daunting obstacles in their cry for jus-tice. What action has anyone in authoritytaken on TEHELKA’s sting, exposing the truthbehind the state-sponsored genocide?Maybe if the Supreme Court had acted a lilefaster (2003-2008), justice would have beenbeer served.

SLJ GALLYOT, ON EMAIL

The candid and frank views of men who werein the midst of the Gujarat 2002 holocaustamply demonstrate that the riots were oneof the worst and saddest chapters of com-munal violence in our country’s history.
