250,000 tonnes/y. (See ‘Focus on Pigments’, Oct 2007, 5). Two years ago, Cabot effectively increased its capacity in Japan by buying-out its 50% joint venture partner, Showa Denko, to take full control of plants at Chiba and Shimonoseki, with a combined capacity of 136,000 tonnes/y. (See ‘Focus on Pigments’, Nov 2005, 5). Cabot also has an 80,000 tonnes/y carbon black plant at Port Dickson (Malaysia). The world market for carbon black began to show signs of tightening onwards from 2003, with expansion in the production for vehicle tyres and rubber components in China and Southeast Asia, as well as in Brazil and Russia. There is a general apprehension that carbon black demand in Asia will soon exceed supply and this has prompted Cabot, Tokai Carbon, Aditya Birla Nuvo, Phillips and others to step up their capacity in Asia. Japan Chemical Week, 8 Nov 2007, 48 (2440), 8 Mexico: Industrias Negromex – rubber & plastics masterbatch Industrias Negromex has recently installed new equipment to make black rubber and plastic masterbatches at its Altamira complex, near Tampico. The company has a long-established reputation for manufacturing about 120,000 tonnes/y of various different types of synthetic rubber, high-styrene resins and emulsions, supplying the domestic Mexican market and about 25 different export markets. No capacity figure has been indicated for the new masterbatch plant. Rubber and Plastics News, 12 Nov 2007, 37 (8), 7 Mexico: Vista – carbon black from scrap tyres Vista International Technologies has received a letter of intent from the provincial government of Jalisco for the establishment of a plant employing Vista’s thermal gasifier technology for processing 5.7 M units/y of scrap tyres for the generation of electricity and the recovery of by-products, including fuel-grade alcohol and carbon black. The plant will probably be built in the vicinity of Guadalajara City (the capital of Jalisco province). No indication has been given as to the investment required nor as to the amount of carbon black output. Press Release from: Vista International Technologies Inc, USA. Tel: +1 303 690 8300. Website: http://www.viti.us.com (8 Jan 2008) Netherlands: Tronox – TiO 2 Tronox has just installed an 8 M wastewater-treatment unit at its 90,000 tonnes/y chloride-route TiO 2 plant at Rotterdam-Botlek. The new unit will remove 99.5% of all pollutants. In addition, Tronox is replacing the furnaces that date back to 1990 when the TiO 2 plant was first built. These improvements are part of a 25 programme designed to enable the Botlek plant to comply with new licence requirements. Chemie Magazine (Nederlandse Chemische Industrie), 13 Dec 2007, (11), 17 (in Dutch) Sri Lanka & India: Aditya Birla Nuvo – carbon black Aditya Birla Nuvo has apparently abandoned its plan to establish a third carbon black in India. Its plants at Renukoot (Uttar Pradesh province) and Gummidipoondi (Tamil Nadu province) have a combined capacity of 240,000 tonnes/y. Birla had planned to build a new plant in western India, probably at Patalganga (Maharashtra province). That project has now been replaced by a new project to spend $120 M on building a new carbon black plant in a specially designated Export Processing Zone at Koggala in southern Sri Lanka. At this stage, no indication has been given of capacity or time-scale for this project. Business Standard, 4 Feb 2008, 10 (186), II.2 Thailand & Vietnam: Omya & Surint – ground calcium carbonate As a key component in its strategy to expand its presence in Asia, Omya (of Switzerland) created a joint venture company with the Surint Holdings group (of Thailand). Within Thailand, the company has been praised for its efforts to cut back on pollution. In August 2005, Omya Surint began converting its fleet of 45 trucks to run on compressed natural gas, instead of diesel, under a programme supported by PTT Public Co Ltd (the only fully integrated gas company in the country). In fact, the first PTT-owned fuelling station for natural gas vehicles was established at the Omya Surint site in April 2007. The joint venture has recently completed a Baht 1.2 bn (or roughly $36 M) investment programme to step up ground calcium carbonate (GCC) capacity in Thailand and Vietnam. About $24 M was spent on expanding an existing calcite mine and ground calcium carbonate (GCC) facility in Lopburi province. The calcite mine is the largest in Thailand, with reserves sufficient to ensure production for more than 50 years. The capacity of the GCC plant was raised from 200,000 tonnes/y to 700,000 tonnes/y and there are plans to raise capacity to 2.2 M tonnes/y at some stage in the future. Major customers for GCC output from this plant include the local paint factories of ICI (now Akzo Nobel) and TOA Paint (of Japan), Thai Plastics & Chemicals, Nawaplastic Industries, Thai Pipe Industry, Bangkok Cable, Advance Agro, Thai Paper, Unilever Thai Holdings and Colgate-Palmolive. About $12 M was spent on installing a new GCC plant at GoDau Industrial Park, near Ho ChiMinh City (Vietnam). GCC from this plant is mainly sold on the Vietnamese market to manufacturers of paint, paper, rubber and plastics. (See also ‘Focus on Pigments’, Aug 2007, 3).
