TUCSON GUITAR SOCIETYSÉRGIO ASSAD
The mission of the Tucson Guitar Society is to promote the awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the guitar and similar stringed instruments to people of all cultures, ages, abilities, and economic means in Tucson and surrounding areas. The Tucson Guitar Society, formed in 1987, is a nonprofit, community-based organization. Our goal is to provide local guitar enthusiasts with opportunities for meeting other enthusiasts, improving their playing, and attending guitar performances and other events. The Society sponsors workshops, concerts and classes throughout the year. We also work with other arts organizations to expand the reach of our instrument. Society members range from appreciative non-players through all levels of performers from beginning students to professional musicians. All members are eligible to receive discounts on activities sponsored by the Society.

Sérgio Assad is best known as the older sibling in the Duo Assad, described by many as the finest pairing of guitarists currently before the public. With Odair, the two have also appeared under the name The Assad Brothers. Sérgio has given many solo concerts as well, often playing his own compositions, much of which is guitar music scored for one, two, or four guitars. He also frequently writes guitar ensemble pieces with other instruments such as violin, cello, and clarinet. A few are large works including the ballet Espantalho for chamber orchestra and Concerto Origins for two guitars, violin, and chamber orchestra. The Duo Assad began making regular concert tours of the Americas and Europe in 1969. Sérgio has compiled a large discography, both as a soloist and in duo with Odair.
This year, students will play two tribute concerts for the maestro. The concerts have mostly different programs, so feel free to attend both events. Simply “buy” a free ticket on the TGS official website: https://www.tucsonguitarsociety.org/concerts
Led by professor Tom Patterson, the guitar department at the University of Arizona in Tucson is known for being of the top guitar programs in the nation. It is host to many successful students who have placed in some of the top competitions in the U.S including the Guitar Foundation of America competition and abroad, like the Tarrega and Alhambra Competitions. The UofA Guitar Department is proud to host internationally acclaimed artists Sérgio and Odair Assad and David Russell as artists in residence who are able to provide concerts and master classes to our talented guitar majors. The guitar department also hosts 5 in-house competitions: The Beeston Memorial Competition, the David Russell Bach Prize, and the Sholin Memorial Competition for the entire department, including graduate and doctoral students; and the Wolfe Memorial and Schaffer Memorial Competition for undergrads only.
