WHEN IT COMES to choosing client entertainment, you essentially have two options.

Option one is to go for something tried and tested – like a sporting event – that you know will do the job well. There will be plenty of opportunities to talk business, and even more to drink booze so you can oil the wheels of negotiation. The snag with this approach is that you have to ensure that it runs perfectly as your clients will have enjoyed similar events to which they can compare it. Indeed, that puts the pressure on to make it bigger and better (read: more drunken) than ever before. My top tip is to use an offi cial partner: there’s nothing worse than being promised a ‘great view’, then fi nding out that it isa great view… of the fl atscreen TV at the Queen’s Head.

Option two is to pick something totally from left fi eld. Something that no one is likely to have done before – offering an email subject line that’s too diffi cult to ignore. This is a higher risk strategy though; it may not appeal to everyone, for starters. But it could be something your clients never forget (hopefully for the right reasons).

We sent Jon Hawkins to the most outlandish entertainment option on earth, or rather, above earth – learning to dogfi ght, in a stunt plane, with an ex-Harrier pilot. And he, well… he vomited all over himself. But before that he had the time of his life – mainly engaging ‘missile lock’ on the photographer David Harrison, during a 4g inverted dive (or something).

So how does it rate as a corporate jolly? The best of the best, apparently.

AMERICANS DON’T GET it, Indians live for it and Pakistanis cheat at it – but we invented it, and its spiritual home is a place called Lord’s in St John’s Wood. The hallowed wicket is really a sight to behold… unless it’s rained off, of course.

The gents at Keith Prowse hospitality have conjured up the ultimate cricket lover’s corporate day. Naturally you’ll be watching from the best seats in the

ground, with Sri Lanka and India – both on tour in England in 2011 – providing the action. During the breaks, the Captain’s Lounge package offers some sought-after distractions including the world famous Lord’s tea – as acclaimed by Chris Evans on his Radio 2 show. There are also unique meet-and-greet opportunities, where captains of industry (and you) can meetthe captains from English cricket past.

If you can’t escape the offi ce to indulge in the Tests though, then Twenty20 is the ideal option for you. Fast-paced and fl oodlit matches take place nightly throughout the summer at both Lord’s and the Brit Insurance Oval across the river in Kennington. If that doesn’t hityou for six, we’re stumped. WHAT A RACKETFor a summer do, SW19 has it all – even a roof. Sorry, Sir Cliff…

THERE ARE ALWAYS certain inevitabilities at Wimbledon: strawberries will be wolfed by the tonne, Sue Barker will fl irt uncontrollably with the male contenders, and a Brit will lose in the semis. It’s fi ne: we’ve come to terms with it and, to be honest, we can forgo a home win at this year’s tournament; the idea of a lanky, ill-tempered Scot lifting the trophy doesn’t exactly fi llus with national pride anyway.

But regardless of the on-court action, for an enjoyable Wimbledon experience you really need a decent base nearby to which you can retire. The Gatsby Club, located just outside the entrance gates, is the perfect place. It’s hard not to pity the rain-sodden masses on Henman Hill, but a few courses of haute cuisine prepared for you by resident Michelin-starred chef Albert Roux helps a lot.

When you want to head for the action, the Skyview Suites cater for larger corporate groups and feature balconied suites in the Centre Court complex. They even come with your own dedicated butler, making sure the champagne keeps fl owing.

If you get in the mood, then Keith Prowse offers a package where you can play former champ Pat Cash on one of the practice courts. If it quickly starts going pear-shaped, time to bow out with the ‘old tennis elbow’ excuse. ■Packages from £295 per person:0845 125 4880; keithprowse.co.uk

REACH FOR THE SKIESOf course, real men get covered in mud, blood and glory – and you get to bellow and roar them on...

MEN ARE SIMPLE beings – we eat, we sleep, we have certain passions that Mrs Square Mile will never quite understand, and we love sport. If you live for rugby, then we’ve sought out our top three packages for you.

First up, South Africa are due to play the fi nal game of their European tour against the star-studded Barbarians at Twickenham on 4 December. What better way to enjoy it than with offi cial hospitality, the best match tickets and the chance to meet both of the legend-laden teams after the game?

Or, for another clash of the titans, head to England’s crunch game against Ireland in the 2011 RBS 6 Nations. Taking place at the new Aviva stadium in Dublin on 19 March, travel packages with the RFU’s offi cial travel company start at £649 per person and include guaranteed offi cial match tickets, as well as the opportunity to upgradeto offi cial IRFU hospitality.

If you fancy something further afi eld, head to the Hong Kong Sevens. Here you’ll have exclusive behind-the-scenes access to an England Sevens training session to see the team in action and hear from the coaches and the players ahead of enjoying all three days’ play.

Now all you need is a green light from the other half… ■Barbarian hospitality: prices from £399; 01452 888 666; mikeburton.comEngland hospitality: prices from £649; 0844 788 5000; englandrugbytravel.com

THE CLIENT ENTERTAINMENT industry has taken a battering in the last couple of years. Client entertainment is less important in the good times than in the bad. Back in 2007 and before, many were turning down endless invitations to golf days, rugby matches, motoring events, etc, as they simply did not have the time or sometimes inclination to go to the them all. Client entertainment had become diluted and stale. Not any more.

People are rediscovering the purpose of hospitality – either to thank existing clients for current or future business or to form relationships with prospects to gain new business.

One of the best methods is to mix the two and arrange for happy existing clients to speak to potential new clients. In these tough times you need to have a close dialogue with your key customers, and the shotgun approach to marketing simply doesn’t work as well.

●●Choose the teams carefully, mixing clients with prospects. Let clients sell your business for you

FORE-FRONTHospitality expert TOBY HEELIS on why golf is ahead of the game when it comes to hospitality

GUIDE

Page 19: Square Mile Guides - Corporate Hospitality - 2010

Corporate entertainment is possibly the only way to achieve this in a relaxed and non-pressured way. Now that the invitations have dried up for the decision-makers, it is the time to restart your ‘business development investment scheme’ (read: corporate entertainment programme) before your competition realises the opportunity ahead of you.

Return on investment is now the aim of corporate entertainment. So which event will work best for you? Prices

of many events have not changed that much despite costs rising, and the price of golf days has even fallen at some places. Golf days at the top venues are extremely good value (£145-£200 per person) compared to a corporate package at an event like rugby or football (around £600 per person).

Many fi nd the act of playing golf invaluable. As well getting your guests’ undivided attention for four hours on the course, you bond over competing together. Choose the teams carefully, mixing clients with prospects – you don’t need to have a company representative in every team. Let existing clients sell your business for you.

An issue with any event is the invitee being able to justify the time away from the offi ce and being seen to be on a ‘corporate jolly’ as some newspapers report it. Golf days are usually away from prying eyes being on private land rather than a public place such as a sports stadium. The other way to help mitigate any negativity is to make sure there is a charity fund-raising angle to the day. Charities are having a hard time like the rest of us so get them involved and everyone wins.

When it comes to choosing which venue, location and easy access are key. Also, you need a forgiving golf course but one which provides challenges for the better golfer. Throw in exceptional service, attention to detail, and the wow factor and you have a winning combination. Brocket Hall Golf Club is a perfect example that has been a well-kept secret in the corporate golf world for years. Just 22 miles from central London, in Hertfordshire, it is within easy reach for the majority north of the Thames. With two championship courses of differing styles, the historic stately home setting is unique and has a Michelin-starred restaurant to round off the experience in style.

See corporate events as investments – ones that allow you to invest in your golf skills at the same time. ■

THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

For the fi rst time in eight years Royal St George’s, Kent, will be hosting The Open Championship. From 14 July to 17 July 2011 current champion Louis Oosthuizen will be competing with the likes of Tiger Woods and Padraig Harrington for the Claret Jug.

Two exclusive packages are on offer at the The Hospitality Village, which hosts private gardens, a large reception area and a business centre, just a short walk away from the 18th green and the fi rst tee.

The Clubhouse Package offers a specially designed, intimate club-style facility. Here, you can follow your favourite player, then retire to informal areas for eating and relaxing throughout the day.Prices start from £460 per person.

THE DOT IN the sky ahead of me slowly starts to move upwards and I’m momentarily dazzled as it crosses in front of the sun. I pull back on the stick and the nose of the plane rises, forcing me back into my seat as I follow the arc of the aircraft in front, and as it begins to bank left I mirror the manoeuvre, turning tighter and tighter until the dot in the sky occupies most of my screen. Through a befuddling blur of vibration and G-force I somehow remember to squeeze the trigger and then I wait, before a stream of smoke starts to pour out of the tail of my quarry. Gotcha.

Fortunately, not least for our photographer David Harrison, who is piloting the plane I’ve just ‘gunned down’, we’re just playing at being dogfi ghting fl ying aces. There are no guns; you just press the trigger, scream “GUNS, GUNS, GUNS” and a smoke canister on your target plane is activated if you’ve scored a direct hit.

There is, however, nothing fake about the competition-spec aerobatic planes we’re fl ying in, nor the fact that it’s me doing the fl ying – I’m performing loops, rolls and wingovers despite having never so much as been near the controls of an aeroplane before 30 minutes ago. Much as I’d love to think I possess a James Bond-like ability to tame any machine (or femme fatale) in seconds, I don’t; that’s why instructor Andy Hill is sitting in the rear seat of our single-prop Extra 300 doing all the important stuff like taking off, landing and making sure that I don’t send us both to an early grave.

The Extra 300 is essentially the same piece of kit used in the Red Bull Air Races, but with room in the cockpit for an additional seat with its own controls.

It looks fabulously evocative, too, complete with bared teeth painted onto the nose. When the time comes to engage with the enemy – otherwise known as your ‘colleagues’ or ‘clients’ – you won’t have any trouble getting into the spirit of the occasion.

We arrive at Kemble airfi eld and are immediately handed fl ight suits to change into before being ushered into the briefi ng room where instructors Andy Hill and Mags Cunningham, both of whom have day jobs as airline pilots, are waiting. First, they take photographer Harrison and me through the basic controls of the plane and then through some of the tastier manoeuvres – loops, aileron rolls, barrel rolls, half-Cuban 8s – casually explaining that most of the learning will be done in the air. As corporate hospitality goes, this is a damned sight more exciting than the usual fare.

There’s a bit of anxious waiting afterwards while the weather decides whether to play ball, before the clouds part and we head out to our respective Extras, don parachutes and climb ▶

▶ into the cockpits. Hill, a former Harrier pilot and fast jet trainer who commutes to work from Cambridge in a plane he built himself, soon joins in the seat behind, fi res up the engine and we’re off, taxiing alongside the carcasses of decommissioned 747s due to be plundered for usable spares before being literally bulldozed.

The visibility is shockingly bad on the ground – with the nose pointing up

it’s virtually impossible to see out the front, so we zigzag along the runway and Hill looks out of the side to make sure we don’t plough into a stationary 747 or the other Extra, which is directly alongside us. Needless to say we don’t, and we line up wing to wing – frighteningly close to my untrained eyes – and when Hill gives the call both Extras rumble down the runway and take off together, still fl ying metres apart in formation. The two planes punch through the clouds in formation before we bank away from them so Harrison and I can get acquainted with the controls. Even as a passenger the feeling is astonishing, like nothing else I’ve experienced before, and as Hill skims the Extra over fl uffy white clouds I catch myself grinning inanely like I’ve just done a canister of nitrous oxide.

We level out and Hill tells me to put my right hand on the stick between my legs (no laughing at the back) that controls the ailerons and determines the plane’s ‘attitude’ – or movement around its various axes – and gently feel it move the plane around. “You have control,” he says. “I have control,” I confi rm, and do little more than think about moving the stick before the Extra

responds – wow, it’s sensitive. As an aerobatic plane it’s twitchy by design, and is capable of pulling up to 10 positive or negative G (by comparison, a Bugatti Veyron accelerating from 0-60mph pulls 1.18 G and an Apollo rocket pulls 7.19 G on reentry).

Hill retakes control and explains that we’re going to do a loop – he’ll take me through it fi rst, then it’ll be my turn. “Pull back hard on the stick. You’ll fl inch [he’s right, I will] but keep pulling. When you start to see the ground above you look up, not before [I forget], and when we’re upright again level it out,” he says. “You have control.” I start to ease back on the ▶

And suddenly the ground appears above me and my brain begins to make sense of things again. Incredible. If only I could bottle these sensations I’d be a billionaire overnight.

Next up is an aileron roll – a 360˚ degree rotation around the length of the Extra taking less than a second – then my favourite, the wingover. Start a smooth climb before dipping a wing, banking hard, descending a little and

levelling out. As I regain my composure Hill points out a distant dot in the corner of our canopy, and tells me to head towards it. They’d better be ready because Hawk – at least that’s what the badge I’d earlier stuck on my flight suit says – is coming to hunt them down.

We duck and dive, barrel roll and wingover in pursuit of one another, with regular and enthusiastic shoots of “GUNS, GUNS, GUNS!” blaring out in our headsets and long plumes of smoke trailing out across the perfect azure sky before the two planes separate.

I’m not a puker. I’m not a pussy. I’m Maverick. I’m a Top Gun. I’m Hawk. And then it hits me like a bullet through the fuselage: a sudden wave of nausea. No I’m not Maverick. I’m just very sick, all over myself. It’s an undignified end to a magical 40 minutes or so.

By the time we land, though, I’ve forgotten all about it, and we’re soon trading stories of dogfights and aerobatic manoeuvres as though we’ve been flying sorties for decades rather than a single morning.

Trust me, you don’t know your clients or colleagues until you’ve tried to chase them out of the air while pulling 5 G, upside down. As Viper says of Tom Cruise’s Maverick in Top Gun: “Let me ask you something. If you had to go into battle, would you want him with you?” Judging by the strength of my stomach, I’m not sure you’d want to go into battle with me. ■

FLORAL NOTESYou only want the best wine and champagne at your events. So don’t spoil the ship with second-

rate fl owers. Speak to Rob instead...

ELTON JOHN’S CIVIL partnership; the Beckhams’ World Cup party; the Alfred Dunhill Cup; Pierce Brosnan’s wedding; the James Bond fi lm premieres… you name it, and Rob Van Helden probably did the fl owers for it.

RVH is to fl oral design what Dior is to couture: innovative, bold and abundant. So what’s the RVH secret? “I believe in volume – in using large amounts of a particular kind of fl ower. I also like to add other elements like herbs, vegetables and fruits to givean extra dimension to displays.”

That’s what we call fl ower power. ■020 7720 6774; rvhfl oraldesign.com

Max SchubertWinemaking legend and creator of Penfolds Grange

Dreamed of making a truly Australian red with such balanced complexity it would mature and develop for at least 20 years and rival the world’s finest wines. First vintage maligned and misunderstood. Ordered to stop making it, he persisted (with the support of Jeffrey Penfold-Hyland). Penfolds Grange is now one of the most sought after red wines in the world.
