Solution brief
SAP Extended WarehouseManagement Application
Optimized by IBM DB2 and IBM POWER7With supply chains being adversely affect-ed by market uncertainties, companies
face greater challenges in managing their
logistics environments. How can you opti-
mize asset utilization, balance automation
and labor, and maintain high throughput?
The SAP Extended Warehouse Manage-
ment (SAP EWM) application, optimized
by the IBM DB2 database environment
and IBM POWER7 servers, can help you
streamline your processes to keep your
supply chain running smoothly.
Update your logistics environmentAre you at the technology end-of-life for
your current warehouse management
solution? Businesses that have an exist-
ing warehouse management solution may
nd it capable of meeting the historicalneeds of the business, but unable to
adapt to current and future requirements.
SAP EWM can help you meet this chal-
lenge so you can better manage risk,
make inventory more visible, contain
costs and adapt to customer expectations.
IBM and SAP can help you optimize your
warehouse management system with a
cost-effective deployment model. With
deployment by IBM as a natural footprint
expansion for SAP customers, SAP EWM
addresses the technology obsolescence
challenge IT departments face in the
area of warehouse management. It also
addresses the business-side challenges
faced by supply chain professionals,
extending supply chain operation capa-
bilities beyond company boundaries and
enabling collaboration. And IBM has been
implementing warehouse managementsystems for over a decade, so we are
familiar with most of the products com-
panies are running and can analyze your
current system.

Gain greater efcienciesSAP EWM is a state-of-the-art, best-in-
class warehouse management application
that supports high warehouse productiv-
ity and efciency. You can integrate the
warehouse management process with
other key logistics and fulllment pro-
cesses, like transportation management,
global trade management, available-to-
promise checks and event management.
SAP EWM can help you:
Control warehouse processes: Manage
movements in the warehouse, from
point-of-goods receipt to goods issue,
and in the yard, from the time a trailer
checks in until a product is packed
and shipped.
Improve warehouse efciency: Miti-
gate problems and major issues with
high inventory accuracy, stock and
process transparency, storage plan-
ning and process optimization, andexecution.
Gain real-time visibility and control
of warehouse operations: Transform
operations into an adaptive fulllment
supply chain in which your customers,
suppliers and partners share knowl-
edge and resources.
Increase competitiveness and
bottom-line revenue: Respond faster
to changes in supply and demand.
Improve labor management and ben-et from advanced slotting functional-
ity: Increase efciency to dramatically
reduce your storage and fulllment
costs.
Integrate automation: Efciently bal-
ance automation and labor to maintain
high throughput.
Use a proven, scalable, integrated
solution: Take advantage of DB2 and
POWER7 servers with support from
IBM Services and IBM Global Financ-
ing.
A quality management engineSAP EWM provides exible deployment
options and seamless integration into the
SAP Business Suite applications using
standard SAP integration technology. It is
highly congurable with standard SAP en-
hancement functionalities, including radio
frequency (RF), radio frequency identi-
cation (RFID), automation and Pick-by-
Voice. The solution includes hardware,
software licenses, training materials,
testing materials and precongured ware-
house processes that can be expanded to
meet your specic situation.
In addition, SAP EWM can address com-
mon requests not supported by older
warehouse management systems such
as labor management, slotting to reduce
breakage and accelerate picking, and
value-added services such as special la-
beling and packaging. It provides greater
visibility for real-time product availability
checking and credit approval prior to
pickup. The solution also provides an
integrated quality management engine to
conrm that products adhere to speci-
cations. Risk management is provided
through traceability with complete batch, lot or serial number visibility to manage
recalls and product diversions.
More functionality, greater exibilityWith SAP EWM, your business can
increase warehouse productivity and
efciency from inventory to labor man-
agement to customer service. IBM is a
leading implementer of SAP EWM and the
sole developer of a SAP EWM accelerator
template that includes conguration, test-
ing and training. And IBM has the ability
to combine other elements into a single
appliance purchase, including hard-
ware, software, databases and consulting.

Better warehouse management is
better businessFrom the warehouse and in the yard, you
can benet from controlled warehouseprocesses with managed movements, im-
proved warehouse efciencies, near real-
time visibility into operations, and reduced
storage and fulllment costs. In addition,
the ability to respond faster to changes
in supply and demand can increase your
overall competitiveness and bottom line.
SAP and IBM bring together a best-in-
class warehouse management solution
to help you transform operations into an
adaptive fulllment supply chain in which
your customers, suppliers and partners
share knowledge and resources.
IBM DB2Extreme reliability, performance and avail-
ability are critical to all SAP systems and
the applications that depend on those
SAP systems. DB2 is optimized and test-ed jointly by IBM and SAP experts before
any new versions of DB2 or SAP solutions
are released. This synchronization of both
IBM and SAP releases helps keep DB2
invisible to the customer, yielding less
risk and more cost savings.
A signicant indicator of DB2 leadership
is the fact that SAP relies on it for its daily
operations. SAP runs DB2 for its own
business production environment, and
it is the preferred platform for develop-
ment in both organizations. This helps to
ensure deep integration with SAP appli-
cations, superior performance, extreme
scalability and low total cost of ownership.
IBM POWER7IBM and SAP have worked together
closely to provide tested, optimized ap-
plications for the IBM Power Systemsplatform. POWER7 servers build on this
legacy, offering unparalleled capabilities
for clients to help reduce risk and more
easily respond to business change. The
Power Systems platform is designed for
simple management and high availability
so you can concentrate on running your
business rather than managing your IT
environment.
POWER7 servers offer an ideal combina-
tion of open standards and integration,
enabling freedom of application choice on
a wide variety of operating systems. The
Power Systems family is designed to free
businesses from IT complexity and im-
prove the responsiveness of both systems
and people. It can help businesses install
applications faster and manage them
more easily, as well as provide rock-solid
security, virus-resistance and legendary
system uptime.
IBM and SAPWith a partnership that dates back to the
founding of SAP nearly 40 years ago, IBM
has the close relationship, experience and
expertise needed to make the most of
your SAP investment. IBM stands out with
its truly end-to-end, holistic set of offer-
ings and capabilities that is unmatched inbreadth, depth and quality. IBM offerings
span the entire SAP requirements spec-
trum, from leading technology, to com-
prehensive services, to industry-specic
solutions co-developed with SAP. In 2010,
SAP awarded to IBM an SAP Pinnacle
Award for customer satisfaction and
Global Technology Partner of the Year.
