PAC News The SCHS Parent Advisory Council appreciates all the community members and parents who showed their love for our teachers by donating school supplies this Valentines! Many thanks from PAC for helping to make our first Annual Supply Dive a success.

Family And Consumer Sciences Culinary Arts classes have been serving up some great recipes for the Black Hawk Inn Restaurant. If you would to like have lunch with us, then check the school website for the next menu being served. We would like you to have lunch with us. In addition to serving lunch, we also cater the Hawk of the Month luncheons. With each meal/menu prepared, our students learn about the various stations in operating a restaurant. With this experience, many of the students are learning that getting an after-school job is easier; work experience is work experience! In our Principles of Foods’ classes, our students are learning some knife skills, designing menu plans and preparing them, plus involved in some classroom competitions…maybe some will end up on “Chopped”. Principles of Foods classes are preparing for a “ Cupcake Wars” competition between each of the classes. Students will write and prepare their own recipes as well as create theme designs and displays with cupcakes that will be judged by faculty and staff. Congratulations to Jamila George, Mrs. Piper’s Principles of Food student, who has received eligibility to enter Master Chef Junior. Good Luck! Students in Mrs. Pringle’s 6th period class made Christmas stockings for Ms. Komatz’s kindergarten class at Pierson Elementary School. Our students sewed and designed 17 stockings and filled them with small wrapped presents. It was a great learning experience for everyone involved. We also sewed 85 Busy Buddy pillows and sent them to Sandlewood Nursing Home for their residents to use. Currently the child development classes are working on cards to be sent to the Emory L. Bennett Veteran’s Memorial Nursing home in Daytona Beach. We have made Easter, St. Patrick’s Day, Thinking of you, and Thank you for your service cards. Many of the residents have no visitors, phone calls or mail. Our donations help to brighten their days and let them know they are not forgotten. Anyone wishing to donate clean clothing, sheets, towels and toys or fabric and notions please contact Mrs. Pringle at: [email protected] or call at 386-322-6272 ext 37739. Thank you for your continued support!

SPRUCE CREEK HIGH SCHOOL RECEIVES $2,125 GRANTLowe’s Donates Money for Hawk Hydroponics

SPRUCE CREEK HIGH SCHOOL has received a $2,125 Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant for HAWK HYDROPONICS & GARDEN, a hands on math and science project for students with special needs.

We are thrilled to announce that Lowe’s has awarded SPRUCE CREEK HIGH SCHOOL funding for the HAWK HYDROPONICS & GARDEN. Our grant application was based on the goal of providing students with disabilities a hands-on project that will help in the development of social skills, working as part of a team, critical thinking and problem solving skills, vocational skills and to improve academic achievement. Thus enabling them to make a successful post-academic transition to become emotionally and economically self-sufficient. We look forward to sharing the HAWK HYDROPONICS & GARDEN with the SPRUCE CREEK AND PORT ORANGE community. This project is designed to demonstrate hands-on science and math skills for students with special needs. They will construct traditional and hydroponic gardens utilizing teamwork in design and construction. Additional benefits will include learning teamwork, physical activity, organizational and social skills, problem solving, critical thinking and increased academic achievement and self-esteem. The students have already started to cultivate the garden area and start the planting process with seeds obtained through vegetables eaten at home or at school. “Ms. Bossardet has seen her students thrive with all aspects of gardening,” said Todd J. Sparger, Principal. Our students, staff and community will greatly benefit in learning through teamwork due to the generosity of Lowe’s in funding and supporting this project. All K-12 public schools in the United States are eligible for the Toolbox for Education program. More information is available at www.ToolboxforEducation.com.

SAC Needs YOU To Help Us Make Our Amazing School Even Better! If you are interested in serving as a member of the SCHS School Advisory Council, please contact Samantha Murray at 322-6272 x 37829, via email [email protected], or simply join us at our next meeting. The School Advisory Council is composed of teachers, students, parents, and other citizens who are representative of the ethnic, racial, and economic community served by the school. We meet once a month at school in the evening. We discuss current hot topics for our school and school district and provide information about various events and programs at Spruce Creek High School. The primary purpose of SAC is to assist in the preparation of a plan to improve student performance. Actions of SAC include resource allocation, approval of staff development, school safety, and school management. All are welcome! Please join us! For more information, including meeting dates and times, visit www.SpruceCreekSAC.weebly.com.

It’s Feedback Time! Have You Taken The School Survey Yet? Deadline April 15th! Each year, we conduct a survey of parents, students, faculty and staff to see how we are doing in meeting everyone’s needs. This survey, called the SAC School Climate Survey, provides us with valuable information about our strengths and weaknesses as a school and as a school district that we use to set goals. We need to hear from you so that we can continue to improve, so your honest, constructive feedback is appreciated. Please access the survey on our website www.SpruceCreekHighSAC.weebly.com before April 15th. You can take the survey on a computer, phone or tablet. You are welcome to come to school anytime during school hours and we will be happy to assist you with accessing a computer for the survey if needed. Thank you! It’s a great day to be a Hawk!

Library Media MinutesWith Mrs. Murray Your media center continues to be in the middle of things. While we face the realities of testing in March, April and May, we will still able to remain accessible for students most days before and after school. During testing season, we will administer over 9,500 tests through the media center and the media center labs- and we will do it all with a smile! Our goal for testing is to put students at ease and provide them with an environment that allows them to do their best. Once testing is over, the process of collecting and organizing over 18,000 student textbooks will begin. In between testing and textbook returns, Mrs. Murray will still be able to teach lessons on research and various pieces of technology and continue to work with the IB juniors on their Extended Essays. WHO VISITS THE LIBRARY? YOUR STUDENT! In 2015-2016, we have served on average 1500 students on passes from classes per month. That means we served an average of 75 students on passes per day. In addition, we have an average of 400 students total accessing the media center before school, during lunch and after school daily. Most days we also have an additional 450 students accessing resources with their teachers through media center labs. What do all of these numbers mean? They mean that your media center serves an average of 800 students DAILY. We are proud to be working together with teachers and students to help increase student achievement through direct instruction, collaborating with teachers, one-on-one assistance for students, and access to resources. MORE BOOKS IN MORE HANDS- EVEN EBOOKS! We have checked out over 5,000 library books this year. In addition, we have added a collection of eBooks that students can check out on their phones, tablets or computers to read digitally. We have seen an increase in circulation of eBooks as the year has progressed and continue to look forward to adding to the collection in the future. THE WEBSITE: KEEPING OUR DOORS OPEN 24/7 One of our goals for the media center is to increase accessibility. The media center website (www.SpruceCreekMedia.weebly.com) provides us with a way to keep the media center doors open 24/7. Students are definitely taking advantage of it! The website is visited, on average, 4000 times per month. Please take a moment to visit it yourself! It is packed full of useful resources. Thank you for your continued support of the Spruce Creek High School Media Center! Please never hesitate to provide me with feedback via the media center website or by e-mailing me at [email protected].

The Business of Flight

When it came time to choose a university, I felt like I was being pulled in every direction. Deciding to come to Embry-Riddle was the best decision I have made. Now, I am not only pursuing a Bachelor degree in Business Administration, but also, an MBA at the same time. Embry-Riddle has provided me with the resources and opportunities to succeed and get involved.

As this newsletter goes to print, the FJAS Department of Energy Science Bowl team of Captain Joshua Pollack, Dalton Price, Emma Ferguson and Suraj Singireddy will be competing at the North Florida Regional Science Bowl being held at the University of Florida. Thank you for representing Creek. There are many students at Spruce Creek that care deeply about preserving our environment and keeping the Earth clean. The Students for Environmental Awareness (SEA) Club, led by Mr. Joshua Platt, have participated in beach clean ups in order to keep our beaches clean and beautiful. Mr. Platt is also leading a garden project in which students will grow various types of plants in order to provide a well-rounded, interactive education involving multiple STEM fields. This project will be a significant and impressive change for Spruce Creek, and the garden will be usable by many teachers and their classes. Recently our students have participated in an event called Envirothon. In this event, students compete and answer environmentally based questions in different categories. The team at Spruce Creek won first place in the District Envirothon and is moving on to compete in the state competition. The students on the Envirothon team are Amy Vaughn, Lindsey Breneman, Azanta Thakur, Sophia Semensky, and Austin Nisbett. Congratulations to the winning team and good luck at States! The Florida Junior Academy of Science (FJAS), led by Dr. Andrea White, has conducted many fun labs in order to teach fellow students about the different areas of science. One of the bigger labs was a shark dissection. Students were able to learn all about sharks and their anatomy. They also did a DNA extraction lab. This lab allowed students to extract their own DNA from their cheek cells. They were able to see their own DNA strands and put them into a necklace, just in time for Valentines Day. DNA makes the perfect gift! They have also performed a lab in which they built solar cars. Students were able to build their very own solar powered mini cars. As it is her last year at Spruce Creek, we would like to thank Dr. White for everything that she has done for FJAS and the science department at Spruce Creek. We want you to know that you have impacted every single one of your student’s lives positively over the years, and you will be missed! Although it is sad to see the school year end, it is very exciting to see that many students are involved in the sciences at Spruce Creek. Students will continue to pursue their interests in science by participating in science programs over the summer. We hope to see even more students participating next year in all of our clubs and science events! We can’t wait for what next year will bring to the sciences at Spruce Creek!By Ashley Myers (Secretary of FJAS)

7Asian Awareness This is the Year of the Monkey 4714, so Ping, our Panda mascot, was featured on our bulletin board with a monkey in March. We celebrated the Chinese New Year on February 11th with members providing delicacies including fried rice, roast pork, soup, almond cookies, fried dumplings, crab ragoon, rice noodles, steamed dumplings and fortune cookies. Many thanks Nami, Star Fitzmaurice, Kaylyn and Kevin Ling, Amica and Artis Lertchicharoenpon, Helene Mayang, and Lydia and Lena Yang, plus Joanne Zhao. Efforts to earn money for our first semester project included a $500 donation to WWF for the Panda. We sold bowls of fried rice for $2.00 at the 8th grade open house on Feb 25th , and we sold a plate of fried rice with sweet and sour meatballs and with a side of veggies for $3.00. We have also set a goal to donate money this second semester to a monkey preserve. We are confident we will be able to make our goal. A side project we are working on is with the Environmental Impact Project where our Asian Association will have a plaque showing our donation of a tree. It was our desire to have a loquat tree planted, but non- evasive Florida plants will be the sole type of vegetation allowed. Japan was our emphasis in January. We served teriyaki chicken and we played a Kahoots game regarding facts about Japan. The seniors won our Minute Contest of who could get that Oreo from one’s forehead to one’s mouth fastest. BUT, the Juniors are winning overall with 3 successes. In February when we played Chocolate Unicorn (piling KitKats on one’s forehead without dropping any in a minute) it was the juniors’ unicorn that was the tallest and the most steady! We look forward to combining efforts with the Indian Cultural Club in March. Maybe we’ll learn a Bollywood dance!

MODEL UN Hello all! Model United Nations had a wonderful end to the 2015-16 year, with three of our delegates placing in the Model UN state conference, FHSMUN (Florida High School Model United Nations). Congratulations to Bryce Tapp and Azanta Thakur for receiving Outstanding Delegate in their respective committees, and Zachary LeBlanc for receiving Most Improved Delegate in his. Our delegation of Malaysia received Distinguished Delegation, and each participant at FHSMUN excelled. We are so excited to leave the state of the club in these excellent and capable hands. For the rest of the year, we look forward to hosting elections to confirm in a new president, VP, secretary, and treasurer, and a final banquet in which we will award superlatives. With all the formalities aside, I would like to dedicate a bit of yours and my time to reflection. I joined Model UN in my freshman year, not at all knowing what to expect. What I found there was a world waiting to be discovered, a whole expanse of education and possibilities of learning just there, in all its beauty. Over the course of the next four years, I would find myself comfortably settling into my passions, all ignited by MUN. The club allowed me to find lifelong friends in sponsors, organizers, and my fellow delegates, as well as learn so much more about the world and the issues that are raging outside the borders of America. I learned what it meant to be a millennial in an increasingly vulnerable planet, and I slid into my niche in society: political, socioeconomic, and environmental activism. MUN helped me find my voice, the voice that I now use to stand up for myself, and that I plan to use to stand up for those who cannot afford to have one. My best and favorite memories of high school lie within this club, whether it’s working with new people at every conference to solve yet another crisis, or giggling on the floor in the middle of the night at FHSMUN, or all the inside jokes and puns we have made throughout the years. I just want to take his opportunity to thank our former sponsor, Mrs. Worcester, and our current sponsor, Ms. Wilson, for putting up with my crazy ideas and incessant arguments/rants, and especially for making this club available at every chance. I want to thank the officer board for being the best friends a delegate could ask for, and the members of MUN for engaging and showing up to the meetings. I hope future members will experience the same love I developed, and that MUN will prosper and flourish. Thank you all once again, and have decorum delegates. Azanta K. ThakurSecretary ‘14-’16

Young Republicans The Young Republicans of Spruce Creek High School proudly announces that Mr. Beatty will be co-sponsor with Mrs. Keith. He replaces Mr. Norman who stepped in as Mr. Tramont began campaigning and could not continue as co-sponsor. Mr. Beatty began his involvement in January helping to put up the new bulletin board with posters from Turning Point USA that say: “I<3 CAPITALISM” and “SOCIALISM: You make it. They take it.” The Young Republicans bestowed flags to the school for the front pole as well as the ones at the football field. With the help of the ROTC, a ceremony was held early one morning in February to lower the half-masted flags in honor of Judge Scalia. Three new Star Spangled Banners were presented and one state of Florida flag. They replaced the faded and weather battered flags. Money was earned to pay for the flags via a spirit night at Donnie’s Donuts on February 23rd. Many thanks to those who stopped by to socialize. We also participated in the Club Expo and the World Language Festival where we earned a few more dollars selling baked goods. Money now earned will go to purchase a metal picnic table to be painted red, white and blue and placed in the Environmental Impact Project area between the parent pickup wall and the Black Hawk Inn. We wish the best to both Madison Taaffe and Jackson Morfis as they have applied for the opportunity to receive a $2000 scholarships from the Republican Party of West Volusia. Deadline was Feb 29th. We are heading toward the end of third quarter with enthusiasm as the Primaries occur March 15th. God Bless America!

Academy Of Information Technology And Robotics AITR is having a great third quarter and as this letter is going out we are participating in the Orlando Regionals for FIRST Robotics Competition. The last week in March we will be participating in South Florida FIRST Regionals and in April we will be traveling to St. Louis for National Competitions. Our robotics team S*M*A*S*H Team 2152 has received incredible help from many mentors and parents who give up their personal time to come in and help the students understand and work with the engineering necessary to build an entire competition robot in six weeks time. In addition we have received incredible help from outside sources for the academy financially. In just the last few weeks we hosted a visit from Larry Volenec, PE|Regional Manager, and Tony Tucci from Florida Power & Light who brought in a generous financial donation for the academy. According to Mr. Volenec, FP&L’s hope is, “that we might help inspire young adults to work in the high-demand fields such as manufacturing, health and biomedical industries, energy and information technology. One of the offshoots might be helping utilities make the electric grid even smarter, pushing the envelope of battery storage technology, or increasing the efficiency of solar photovoltaics and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.” The students and teachers of the academy sincerely appreciate FP&L’s generous donation. AITR’S CyberPatriot Varsity Team placed second in the state for the platinum level. The Junior Varsity Teams were first and second in the state’s gold level. They will be participating in off-season competitions and will be part of the cyber camp held at Daytona State College in the summer. AITR will again host their annual Robotics Summer Camp. Information on the times and dates, plus an application will go out in the next newsletter.

Guten Tag Freunde! German Club has been busy, we completed our snack fundraiser with astounding success and went on our annual bowling trip with twenty club members. We met up at New Smyrna Lanes to test our bowling skills. In January, we sold Welch’s fruit snacks, including the new apple-pear flavor, and three different varieties of chocolate covered pretzel rods. We only had one left over box! At our meeting in March, we celebrated our fundraising success with a pizza party. Our IB seniors worked hard on their IA’s, and we ate red, heart shaped cookies to celebrate Valentine’s Day. We watched German language movies like “Hilfe...Ich bin ein Junge”, “Copying Beethoven”, and Star Wars without subtitles. We read traditional German folk tales and learned about holidays like Oktoberfest, Weihnachtszeit, and Karnival—otherwise known as Octoberfest, Christmas time, and Mardi Gras. Ben Weinrich brought in his griddle so we could make Strammer Max, a classic Austrian breakfast. We collaborated with Mrs. Pringle to collect linens and clothes for the less fortunate. Additionally, next quarter, as part of our April project, we plan to donate pet supplies to the New Smyrna Humane Society. Also in April, we’ll meet up at the movie theater and see a new film, Batman vs Superman or Caesar. We’re excited to do more as a club and with other clubs to improve ourselves and our community. 10JROTCParents and Cadets: Fast and Furious best describes the past two months for the Cadets as we have provided Color Guard support for the 8th Grade Open House, and National Honor Society Induction Ceremony. We also competed in a few Drill competitions, conducted a few fundraising events and through it all found time to plan for our Military Formal scheduled for March 16th at the Shores Hotel (and Parents are invited)! On February 27th the Drill Team went to Umatilla High Drill to compete a female color guard, male color guard, a male squad, and a mixed platoon. The platoon will be going to the state competition on April 16th, wish them luck! This past Monday, we did a spirit night at Jersey Mike’s Subs to bring in funds for Military Formal as well. The SCHS Warrior Games is coming up on March 11th, and we will have a team to represent JRTOC. Next month, we will continue going over first aid procedures for the lower level Cadets and Leadership rules/lessons for the upper levels. We will participate in the tri-school challenge with Atlantic and Mainland High School’s on April 9th. We look forward to defeating them and maintain bragging rights and the champions trophy. The HAWK Battalion will celebrate our Award’s Night on April 14th in the Spruce Creek Auditorium and will be gearing up for the Cadet Challenge in May. The end of the year in dwindling down, so let’s make the best if it. Have a great spring break and look forward to seeing you March 28th!

Your S-5, LT Autumn Himmel
