COMMUNIQUÉ 67 - 2017 May 2017 2

OPEN DAY / EVENING 2017 On Monday, 24 April 2017, we held our annual open day for prospective Grade 8s. Approximately 260 learners from various primary schools spent the day with us to learn more about this exceptional school. They were met by our CEO - Dylan Fernandes and our group leaders. They were entertained by our band and the acapella choir, after which they enjoyed an exciting fashion show to demonstrate all the cultural and sport activities the school has to offer, including the prestigious awards and uniforms they can expect at SBHS. The boys were then taken on tour around the school and the facilities before they returned to their respective primary school. That evening we gave parents the opportunity to experience the “SBHS” way and have a look for themselves why this is such an amazing school. The evening started with a tour around the school, to experience some of the classes we have to offer as well as the sport facilities we have. Mr Ahrens, the SGB Chairman, addressed the parents first, followed by Mrs Freeman, Acting Principal; Mrs Sayed, Deputy Principal and Mr Marais, Acting Deputy Principal. Thereafter Mrs Hauptfleisch and Mr Garnett discussed the various Cultural and Sporting activities at the school. The floor was opened to the parents for Q & A to enable them to have clarity regarding our school and to assist them in making the right decision for their child’s future.

ITSI E-LEARNING We are pleased to announce that we have launched the new ITSI E-learning system at Springs Boys’ High school, but sadly we are having some issues with tablets that have out-dated software. Android devices Some learners are still using Android tablets with versions between 3.1 and 4.0.4. The ITSI application requires Android 4.4 to run optimally, although we are able to support tablets with Android version 4.2 on them, but this requires an older version of the application, which lacks newer features and developments. To check your version of Android, go to your device setting and look for the device information tab. iOS devices iOS devices must support iOS version 9.0 in order to be fully compatible with the ITSI platform. Windows devices Windows laptops and tablets are fully supported by our infrastructure. Windows devices must be running Windows 8.1 or Windows 10. Any learners that are found having Windows 8 are automatically upgraded to Windows 8.1 by the IT Department. Please feel free to contact Mr Young or Mr de Lange (IT Department) 011 818 2175 if you have any queries.

AFRIKAANS Six of our learners took part in the Afrikaans Spelathon earlier this term. E. Hoffmann is through to the Gauteng finals, which will take place in September. Thirty-four of our boys were entered into the ATKV Senior Afrikaans Olympiad. Results will be shared as soon as they are available. Good luck to our boys and well done on your participation.

INTERACT CLUB - BLOOD DRIVE Our Annual Blood drive for Term 2 took place on 4 May at the South African National Blood Services in our new Mall! We had many brave men joining the Interact Club, spreading awareness about the importance of donating blood and hopefully saving a life! The Club will have another drive in Term 3.

TUTORSHIP 2017 The aim of the Tutor programme is to offer extra support to our grade 8 and grade 9 learners, academically and socially, and to have access to a Big Brother here at school. Our Tutors invite all grade 8 and grade 9 learners to make use of this service and allow them to be the “Best of the Best”. SCIENCE EXPERIMENT DAY On Thursday, 11 May the Science Club boys proudly displayed their experiments for everybody to come and see. The learners had lots of fun and learned new things about science. Kyle Esterhuizen and Musa Mabena did the Jumping Jellybean experiment. Sebastian Walters and John le Roux changed iodine into purple smoke, made flammable hydrogen gas and threw sodium into water which made a burst of energy. Bongani Lumbambo made an exothermic reaction and Liam Rothballer (Club Captain) showed the students how to make elephant toothpaste with chemicals. The learners who attended could also join in the fun with our electrostatic machine, making shock discharges and learning about the laws of physics.

RUGBY With all the warm-up games out of the way, it is time for the league to start. We will be playing in the Quarter Final at Hoërskool Hugenote. Good luck to all the teams playing. As a bonus four of our boys are representing the Valke Provincial Side. A big congratulations to Tumelo, Amu, Ntokozo and Hlohomelo.

SALUTE

BROADWAY

† HAMLET †

On May 8th, 120 of our Grade 12 learners went to the University

of Johannesburg’s theatre, to watch Thinktheatre’s staging of the

matric drama set work, ‘Hamlet’, by William Shakespeare.

Escorted by their teachers (Mrs Standish, Mrs van Zyl & Mrs Bon-

aretti), our boys in green and gold were seated in the balcony for

the first time, allowing them an aerial view of the stage. For some,

this was their first time inside a theatre and so the play held more

than the usual fascination for them.

I would like to thank my colleagues for accompanying us, and Mrs

Freeman, for allowing us to take time out of school to watch a live

production of Shakespeare’s acknowledged masterpiece.
