Tjena tjena Last year had been a very exciting time for us. We hope
you had fun too. The paper recycling project brought in nearly
19,050kg of paper. Cheers to the go-green effort! We also set out
to adopt Intan the elephant from the Singapore Zoo. So far we have
raised about $1,000, still a long way from the $25,000 needed for
the adoption. Keep the donations coming! And our ladybug has a
name! There were so many good names to choose from and we finally
decided on “Lele”. Named by Catalena Chew, it means “Happy” in
Chinese and also “Smile” in the secret Smålish language. Catalena
wishes everyone who visits Småland will leave with a happy smile on
their faces. Well done and congratulations. The year then ended
with Småland’s first Christmas Bazaar. Thank you to all the småles
who showed up. Not forgetting the 17 little bosses who did a great
job in running their business. Check out the website for pictures
of the event. This year, it’s going to get even more fun! Alex and
Tampi will be celebrating their 1000-something (they can’t
remember!) birthday on 9 March 2008. Enjoy a free ice-cream on this
special day! See the coupon at the bottom of the bug news. We also
have a lot of fun activities planned for the whole year. Plus, IKEA
Alexandra has a new home for all småles. We’re sure you’d have lots
of fun there! So keep a lookout for all the excitement that’s
coming your way. Happy New Year!

froggy Frogs and other amphibians are seriously threatened and many
may be wiped out from the face of the Earth soon. There are over
6,000 species of amphibians in the world. But did you know that
half of these species may become extinct in your lifetime? If this
happens, it will be the largest mass extinction since the
disappearance of the dinosaurs.

Amphibians are a very successful group of animals. They are found
all over the world except in the sea and the Polar Regions. They
live in a wide variety of land and water habitats ranging from
forests to deserts.
frogs everywhere
Amphibians are vertebrates (animals with a backbone). They are
cold- blooded, which means that their body temperature varies with
their surroundings. On a warm day, the body temperature of an
amphibian is higher than it would be on a cold day.

count the lines
This frog is easily identified by the 4 lines running down its
back!
You can be frog-friendly by keeping their habitat clean and free of
pesticides. Do not litter or release your pet frog into our nature
reserves. You may wish to set up a frog-friendly habitat to
encourage local frogs to breed. Visit www.zoo.com.sg for more
details on frog-themed activities planned for the March
holidays!

check out these frogs at the Fragile Forest in Singapore Zoo!
The Australian gastric- brooding frog `gives birth’
through her mouth. She swallows her fertilized eggs
or tadpoles, which then develop in her stomach.
Meanwhile, she stops eating and shuts down her digestive system
otherwise
her babies will be digested! After a month, she spits out
tiny froglets.
birth through mouth
Amphibians play a very important role in the food web as prey and
predators, and help to maintain the balance in the ecosystem. Frogs
feed on mosquitoes and keep their populations in check. The
disappearance of frogs in some areas has resulted in a rise in
mosquito problems and mosquito- related diseases such as
malaria.
