Karen Stintz, BA, MSC, MPA

President & CEO, Variety Village

Variety Village serves a large community across Ontario through outreach programs in the areas of accessibility training and education as well as our newly expanded programs, such as Children in Motion, which is presented at the MLSE LaunchPad in downtown Toronto. In the spring, Volt Hockey will expand to the City of Markham so that more children can play the adaptive sport. We also serve as a centre for rehabilitation to community for stroke, physical trauma and more.

Variety Village is a special place built through funds raised by Variety- the Children’s Charity of Ontario. The original mission of Variety, the Children’s Charity was to make sure that no child was left behind. At Variety Village, we have expanded this mission to make sure that Every-body is welcome.

As a not-for-profit facility, we rely on donor dollars, government and foundation grants. Our corporate partners help us provide programs and services, both here at the Village, and within the larger community through third party events such as Pizza Nova’s That’s Amore Pizza for Kids, coming up on May 8 and the Ontario Teamsters Invitational Golf Tournament on July 10.

This program guide is filled with program choices for children, youth, adults and active agers. We are confident there is something for everyone within these pages. Be sure to sign your kids up early for summer camps to avoid disappointment – they fill up quickly!

If you have questions or comments, there is an opportunity for all members to provide feedback using the “Talk to Us” button on the Variety Village homepage.

I am proud of the work that we do at Variety Village and proud of our staff and volunteers who make it possible. Thank you for choosing Variety Village.

MESSAGE FROM THE CEOWe have had a very busy fall and winter and look forward to welcoming the spring with a freshly renovated women’s changeroom and the re-opening of our front lobby, including new automated doors. We are grateful to the Rick Hansen Foundation, the Federal Government and the Ontario Trillium Foundation for investing in Variety Village.

Variety Village is an accessible and inclusive sport, fitness, wellness and life skills facility that also provides adapted programs and equipment for people with disabilities. As a renowned training centre where athletes play, learn and compete from grassroots right up to elite podium levels at the Olympics, Paralympics and Special Olympics, Variety is proud to offer opportunities for play and competition on eight sports teams. As well, our certified personal trainers are ready to work with you to help you meet your fitness goals.

INTRODUCING PHYSICAL LITERACY TO YOUR INFANT OR TODDLERParents and children can register for a number of early morning/early afternoon programs in the fieldhouse or pool. The activities are designed to foster social play and connections for children and friendships for the parents. Memberships for kids under three years are free.

GETTING ACTIVE WITH CHILDREN IN MOTIONPrograms for children three to six years of age. In the fieldhouse and in the pool, we introduce children to fundamental movement in an environment that is fun, inclusive and interactive.

NOT SURE WHICH SPORT YOUR CHILD IS INTERESTED IN PURSUING? As children transition out of our Children in Motion classes and show an interest in sport, Variety Village offers Multi-sport classes on land and Red Cross swim programs in water. These classes introduce, and help to foster, sport skills. Throughout the 11-week program, coaches from our teams will guest teach, introducing simple sport specific skills. This gives children the opportunity to experience each of the sports we offer at Variety Village. For children five years and older.

INTRODUCTION TO SPORT This program suits children who have mastered basic fundamental movement skills through the Children in Motion and/or Multi-sport classes. If your child has an interest in participating in a specific sport on land or in water, Variety Village offers eight introduction to sport teams including wheelchair basketball, weightlifting, track, swimming, synchronized swimming, Taekwondo and VOLT Hockey.

Coaches facilitating the programs follow a teaching model that focuses on age, stage and development under the Canadian Sport for Life Long Term Athlete Development Model (LTAD). At this level, children are introduced to the ABC’s of sport: agility, balance and coordination, in an environment that is athlete-centered, fun, safe and inclusive. For children five years or older.

VARIETY VILLAGE ATHLETIC CLUBSYoungsters who have excelled in the grassroots programs and are interested in competition will transition towards the Athletic Clubs, where the focus is on competition following the LTAD model. At this level youngsters are required to commit to year-long training schedules, competitions and camps within the region, province and country. Coaches are certified under the National Coaching Certification Program with years of expertise in their sport.

Families joining Variety Village demonstrate their commitment to activity and the importance of exercise on a daily basis. Alongside programs available for parents, we offer recreational and aquatics programs for children that create new connections, foster fundamental movement skills and teach basic sport skills. Our goal is to promote physical activity in an environment that is inclusive.

The Ability in Action program is an energetic and hands-on learning experience. On-site at Variety Village or off-site at a location of your choice, our Ability in Action program staff provide activities that are both interactive and inclusive. Through the Ability in Action program, educators, students, coaches, service industry leaders and participants from municipalities across Ontario receive practical experience to promote inclusive sport and activities. With the focus placed on integration, acceptance, awareness and teamwork, participants gain an increased awareness of the importance of inclusive activities for people of all abilities.

We educate individuals, classes and community organizations about the importance of providing opportunities for people of all abilities. Through inclusive and integrated hands-on activities, adapted games, wheelchair activities, rockwall climbing and energetic discussions, participants will learn the importance of welcoming, accepting and understanding that we are all able, and as such, should support each other’s goals whether they are related to sport or social ventures.
