It is four years since I arrived in Scarborough and they have flown by. This season I am taking time to reflect, hatch future plans and develop some exciting new projects. But never fear, I’m leaving you in the capable hands of two giants of British Theatre – Alan Ayckbourn and John Godber – who direct their own work as part of a season that also includes a host of entertaining, varied and excellent visiting work.

On a sadder note, on New Year’s Eve we lost Charles ‘Mac’ McCarthy. Without Mac’s tireless efforts the Odeon would never have been converted into our beloved SJT. His support for me was typical: generous, energetic and enthusiastic. We will all miss him.

We take our role as custodians of this historic Odeon building very seriously and passionately believe that it is an important cultural icon for the town and a valuable community resource. In order to secure its future for the next generation – particularly relevant in the countdown to our 60th anniversary celebrations in 2015 – our home needs some significant conservation and maintenance.

It is Laura Stratton’s birthday and, to celebrate the event, her husband Gerry, their two sons and their partners are gathered for an evening out in the family’s favourite restaurant. The dinner turns out to be a significant moment in all their lives with repercussions for years to come.

Time Of My Life was first produced in Scarborough in 1992 and presented a year later in the West End at the Vaudeville Theatre. This will be its first major revival directed by the author.

Personal battles play out on the pitch as a team of nurses, students, receptionists, lawyers and housewives fight to excel in what was once uniquely a man’s world. Maggie faces a side at the top of their game, as well as her own uncertain future. Will her courage and passion win out?

Muddy Cows gets inside the world of elite female rugby with crashing tackles, rucking mothers, and real life hookers.

BAFTA-winning playwright John Godber has written extensively about sport, including iconic rugby league comedy Up ‘N’ Under which won an Olivier Award and was made into a feature film.

To assist them, civilian witness Barry Hawkins and Ez Swain, his ‘minder’, are on hand to confirm final identification. What can possibly go wrong?

For the luckless Major quite a lot really, when his key witness turns out to be a garrulous, suspiciously unreliable traffic warden and the minder, a troubled young female soldier with severe attitude problems. On top of which, is Quentin’s so-called elite unit really all it’s cracked up to be?

Steve Phillips and The Rough DiamondsLocal blues and guitar legend Steve Phillips, playing with his band The Rough Diamonds, proves his status as one of the best British blues guitarists you are likely to hear. This is a very specific point in time.

I’ve been waiting to have the idea for this show for weeks, for months. A space held open in my head waiting for the idea. For months. I’ve done previews and I’ve booked the tour and I’ve stared at the internet and I’ve made chicken and I’ve tried not to worry. But the idea has not come and I have worried. I’ve worried and doubted and waited more and more and more. But then today, having dropped my dad off at the train station and met my friends for some coffee, Whilst driving home to write this (very overdue) brochure copy - dreading the thought of heaving half lies and optimistic promises into something vaguely intriguing but not developmentally restrictive - half way home, it happened. Somewhere between East London and South London - It arrived. The Idea. Just like that. Like a child, late home from school, oblivious to the worry and the panic and the phone calls. It just walked in and sat down like it wasn’t even a big deal. So now I’m typing this in my bedroom because the boy who lives next door is playing the James Bond theme on what I assume to be a trumpet .

And you have to trust me .

Two hours ago I didn’t have the idea. Now I do. And it’s going to be good.

Onyx Brass has dominated the international brass chamber music scene, playing across Europe and the US, and even for The Queen and previous Prime Ministers. They have performed and recorded with the likes of Bob Chilcott, John Tavener, John McCabe and Judith Bingham.

This programme takes us on an eclectic tour of the countries and composers who have contributed to our rich history of brass ensemble music over the centuries. It is rooted in the Renaissance but with a touch of the great fugue as well as more modern European composers.

In ancient civilisations, temple priestesses meticulously mapped the heavens, seeking to understand their gods. And so astronomy was born.

A story of time and space: two women astronomers, from the 21st and 18th, look up at the same night sky and find themselves colliding in their search for understanding. Caroline Herschel longs for a family and home of her own; Jess contemplates the prospect of losing both.

Each woman can precisely map her position in the universe yet struggles to find her place in the world.

Ginger Baker’s Jazz ConfusionThey once voted Ginger Baker as ‘the musician least likely to survive the 60s’.

Now, four and a bit decades later, Ginger has proved them all wrong, returned to the UK and formed a formidable quartet with funk and jazz giant Pee Wee Ellis (tenor sax), Alec Dankworth (bass) and Abass Dodoo (percussion).

The music is a healthy mix of Thelonius Monk, Wayne Shorter, Sonny Rollins, plus originals by Pee Wee Ellis and Mr. Baker himself; a fresh, challenging and highly charged mix of jazz, fusion and African sounds. Ginger Baker and Ghanaian percussionist Abass Dodoo provide a perfect powerhouse of rhythms.

Digital cinema at the SJTExciting news for film at the SJT! April 2013 will see the installation of a digital projector in The McCarthy theatre.

What will this mean to you the cinema-goer? A greater choice of films, new releases quicker, our ability to show more screenings and present more specialist, classic, children’s and foreign language films among our standard programme.

We plan to introduce the occasional ‘season’, which in turn gives us scope for Q&A’s with members of the film industry.

‘Live’ in the MacThrough partnerships with the The National Theatre and The Royal Opera House we will soon be the first and only cinema in Scarborough to stream live performances of theatre, opera and ballet from these venues as they are staged in London.

Donation: Customers will be asked if they would like to make an optional 60p donation towards the upkeep of the iconic SJT building.

Concessions: Available to those receiving state retirement pension or unemployment benefits, full-time students and children aged 16 and under. To those receiving disability allowance and to one carer, tickets are available at the lowest price for that performance.

Re-sales & Exchanges: We must have the ticket at the Box Office to perform a re-sale or exchange. We will attempt to re-sell tickets on the customer’s behalf if we receive them within three days of the performance. More than three days prior we will exchange them for another performance for a fee of £1 per ticket.

Late-comers: Anyone arriving once the performance has begun will not be admitted until a suitable break, which, on occasion, may be the interval.
