Editorial: Roy Rajsic [email protected] What a whirl of tennis activity; after a busy, busy indoor season Spring sprang and the Portlock courts are full again for drop in, practice, and just plain fun. It is great to see everyone back from their Winter hiatus and playing tennis as well as ever.

When you see the schedule laid out below you will find it hard to believe how many things are going on for the Summer season. Two great innovations this year are the combined tennis/golf tournament, held last weekend to the great delight of participants and spectators alike, and the upcoming junior tennis and golf camp. The junior camp will be a tremendous opportunity for local kids to get top flight coaching in both of these challenging sports. Peter Schelling and Marjorie Blackwood deserve our thanks for being actively involved in these events. Our membership continues to grow and I think the level of tennis is getting better and better (at least I hope it is– I seem to be losing much more often these days). The women’s side is getting tougher and tougher as more players are working to develop their games. The men seem to be lagging behind a bit in taking advantage of coaching and practice sessions but I am sure that will change. The upcoming tournaments should provide some terrific competition. Enter early to be sure of getting a spot. The tournaments are designed to be fun first and competitive second – that is until the Gulf Islands Open at the end of the season. Then you have to be ready to play hard. Have fun and play nice with each other; we will see you on the courts.

Presidents Report: Erica Ross, President [email protected] Spring is officially here and we are heading into a beautiful summer, even if that sunshine is still playing hide-and-seek with us! It is great to have the indoor alternative, but several events have already been successfully held at Portlock and the drop-in days have begun. The Club sends a warm welcome our brand new 2013 members: Dave Blizzard, Sandra Bradley, Lorraine Brewster, Marshall Heinekey, Wayne LeCarte, David Naphtali, Marnie Naphtali, Barbara Peterson, Maureen Phelan as well as Holly Van Schoor. They may appear at the Portlock drop-ins, or you could even pick a new name from the club list and invite them for a game or other event. Be creative! We also embrace former members returning: Lynda Arden, Patricia Gibson, Herbert Otto, Flora Scott, Jackie Shrive, Jerry Shrive, Bill Wilson

and Jane Winter. Great to see you again! Several people have suggested the SSTA obtain an AED unit (in case of cardiac arrest) to be kept at Centre Court. While a good idea, these units are expensive, is there anyone out there...or a group...who would consider donating one? It would be perfect to have one in place for the Fall/Winter indoor season. Make the most of our outdoor season, there are lots of events, games and social stuff to choose from...See you at Portlock!

On the Money Front: Doris St Germain

[email protected] Things have slowed down over the last couple of months but we are still in good shape financially. The club account stands at $ 4,547.79 as of May 31st. Most of our usual expensed such as our Tennis BC membership and insurance are paid. The summer BBQ will be the next big expense, plus the board has committed $1000 for the Junior Golf and Tennis Camp to be held in mid August. The Golf Club will donate $1000 and PARC will contribute $2000 to this event. Our Centre Court ledger balance at the end of May was $13,907.80. The budget for the indoor court was passed at the April 17th AGM and in May we did pay $5,800 in interest payments as well as $17,400 on the principal to the Founders Group. There will be payments for the on-going expenses (such as Hydro, Golf Club lease, clothing supplies & GST) and our annual insurance which is payable in July, as well as a $500 transfer into our Reserve Fund that will be made during the summer. Overall, things are going very well and Centre Court is a success. At this time the total cost for the construction of Centre Court is $634,810.63 less the HST rebates of $62,541.30 for a final cost of $572,269.33. The upper floor was finished at a cost of $4,413.22 and has worked out very well as the main viewing area. This whole project was a huge undertaking, but has proven worthwhile and everyone who plays indoors loves the court. Thanks to all for their efforts and participation in making it such a success…

Fundraising Activities: Suzanne Tremblay [email protected] and Mary Waugh [email protected]

The new fundraising team has been very busy – learning the ropes and lining up volunteers for the various traditional events to which we all look forward… There has been a wonderful response from many members but as always we can use some more help.. They have also been some exploring of some new options… Donations since the start of the year total $3,226, and we are always happy to receive any amount to help with paying off the Centre Court loans which now stand at $272,600. The $500 charitable donation through the Tennis Canada program is still available, and any information about how to make this donation can be obtained from Erica Ross or Doris St Germain.

SSTA & SSI Photo Club – “ Tennis Photo Shoot “: May 29th was the beginning of a new fundraising experiment for SSTA --- we are exploring the use of the Internet as a vehicle for Fundraising… the shoot was lots of fun for both the photographers and the tennis folks… We got some wonderful work/images. This takes our idea to the next

step – producing a tennis “product”… So stay tuned… it is going to be fun to see what will unfold… work in progress… Anyone with an interest in Internet marketing challenges… we could really use some talent/experience or even interest in that area… please contact me… I would love to talk to you about it… [email protected]

St Mary’s Paddle& Poker: This wonderfully popular Summer event will be running again this year on August 5th and again it will take place at Jack and Ginny Giles lovely place on St. Mary’s Lake… Thanks again Jack & Ginny – you are indeed wonderful to have us back again Thanks you!!! Watch for upcoming details and be sure to put it on your calendar. For further information or to volunteer to help with the fun contact Erica, Doris or Ginny – they are the guiding lights of this endeavour…

“Guess the Number of Balls in the Bag”: Once again the SSTA will take part in the Fall Fair, September 14 & 15 with a tent display and a "Guess How Many Balls" contest! A large, transparent plastic bag filled with used tennis balls will be on show, and people can buy tickets to guess the total in the bag. SSTA brochures and membership information will also be on display, and after the event the balls will be given away. We hope this will be profitable, as well as an eye-catching and amusing way to raise the SSTA profile in the community and promote Centre Court.

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU: Balls, Balls and more Balls!! You can drop your old balls in a collection container in the stair area at Centre Court or in the box in the air lock at Portlock Park. Just the balls please – the cans go into the recycle bins. If you have balls to donate but cannot drop them off, call Erica Ross at 537-5422 or Doris St Germain at 537-1635 and we will have them picked up. We want as many as possible by September 11th, so that gives us enough time to fill the bag and count up our secret total!

Bids & Bites Bridge Tournament: Susan Russell [email protected] and Tricia Simpson [email protected] The week after Thanksgiving, Thursday, October 17 at Susan Russell’s… they will mixing things up a bit this year so it will be lots of fun and yummy food too… Because of location there will be a limit the 10 tables – that means 40 women a chattering… wow that sounds intense… I’ll bet there is lots of laughter… The registration fee will be the same $20 charge if paid prior to Sept. 15th and thereafter $25. We would also like to keep it to ladies - it is after all “ Ladies Who Do Lunch ” Perhaps we could host a “ Gentlemen's Poker Night “ – if there is an interest expressed by the gentlemen of the club… for a good time call Susan and Tricia… Country Grocer Tapes & Thrifty’s Smile Card The ‘Save a Tape’ program at Country Grocer and the Thrifty’s Smile Card program are still working well and are year-round fund raisers The total we received for both so far this year is $689.39. Please continue stuffing receipts in the box or using the Smile Card – it all helps and really doesn’t cost you anything. SSTA Clothing Line: Louise Devlin [email protected] Our clothing sales are an on-going fundraiser managed by Louise Devlin.

She is hoping to have a permanent display in the Green Room at Centre Court in the near future, but for now call her at 537-4622 if you want to buy something. It’s great to see our members wearing our logo on the court and around town. Don’t forget they make great gifts for your tennis envy friends… I have also had it on good authority that they are looking new lines… so do keep your eyes open…

Membership News: Doris St Germain [email protected] We are close to half way through our current membership year and there are 170 paid up members for 2013. A recent email was sent to the 21 members who had not renewed and several have responded that they will send in their membership dues. Anyone who has not rejoined by the end of June will no longer be considered members and will be removed from our distribution list. The membership fee is reviewed every year at the AGM in accordance with our bylaws. Section (7) states: The annual membership fee must be determined at an annual general meeting of the SSTA. In April the decision was to keep the fee for 2014 at $25.00. This fee also includes the 5% GST, which is better for the club than the 12% paid up to April 1st for HST.

Action on the Courts: Junior Program: Great News !!! One of the mandates of SSTA is to promote Tennis in the Community and we are delighted to say that the junior program is thriving… The Winter 2012/2013 season saw a total of 80 juniors - age 3-16 for a variety of programs offered by Baseline Tennis Academy. It was a great season of teaching by Marianne Banman and Andrew Ross-Collins in cooperation with the SSTA. Thanks both of you – what a great job and the future of Tennis on the rock looks solid…

they have missed their shot… “Tennis” by Peter Jensen

Business Ladies: Outdoor: Justene Tedder [email protected] The Business Women's League started up on June 12th with the schedule running to the end of September. This is a league for those women who work during the day and need to get in some exercise or fun. Women who work in business are given preference for 'player' positions and any remaining player positions will be filled by whoever wants to be a player. We play on Wednesday evening from 5:30pm to 7:00pm, using two courts at Portlock Park. This is a fun group that often goes to the Golf Club for a drink &/or a snack after the match.

Drop In : The Drop-In at Portlock Park has been very popular for a very long time. Now that the weather has become so beautiful it is time to once drop-in and see your friends and meet new ones. If you are new to the club we encourage you to come out, you will be warmly welcomed by those present. There is a wide range of abilities and great comradeship. The times are as follows:

Men – Tuesday – 8:00 to 11:00 Ladies – Thursday – 8:00 to 11:00 Mixed – Friday – 8:00 to 11:00

Tournament Results: --- Jennifer Morgan [email protected] Jennifer is once again coordinating a wonderful Tournament agenda for SSTA… She does it so well and so smoothly… Great Job Jennifer and a million Thanks from all of us…

Opening Day Tournament and Lunch: We want to thank Jennifer Morgan for organizing the Opening Day Tournament as well as hosting the potluck afterwards, it was very generous of her and Mike to once again host it at their lovely home. It was well attended and everyone had a great time. The tournament, despite some sprinkles, was a roaring success. We had a very competitive field and lots of great tennis, in the end we had a tie for both the men’s and ladies’ champions. Marcus Wenzel and Rick Weatherall finished with the same number of points as did Justene Tedder and Ann Stewart. In true Salt Spring fashion we tossed for the winners and Rick and Ann prevailed and are now the “raining” champions. Let’s hope the weather improves and we get some warm spring weather. Jack Fisher Memorial Mixed Doubles… The Jack Fisher Memorial tournament survived a bit of drizzle and went off well. Joan Beatty (Jack Fisher's daughter) played and presented the generous Fisher prize and the cup to ladies winner Erica and men's winner Michael Powell, runners up were Justene Tedder and Blair Carley. Some great tennis was played

Entry was limited to 16 participants: 8 men and 8 women, a man and a woman in each team. Participants entered individually and the golf and tennis Pros set the teams for the day.

Half the participants played golf in the morning while the others played indoor tennis then switching for the afternoon.

For golf nine holes were played using the alternate shot format with 2 points available per hole for a maximum of 18 points. For tennis a nine game match was held with 1 point awarded for each game won. Each team played two matches for a maximum of 18 points.

The overall winning team was determined by adding

the points earned from golf to the points earned from tennis.

This year’s tournament was a roaring success with very happy competitors… All went well and everyone went home happy. There was a Tennis Gypsy Camp sighting at Centre Court during this Prestigious Event… laundry and all…

The big winners were Pat Sutherland and Blair Carley. They won both the tennis and the golf sections of the tournament. Pat showed her consistency at tennis and golf but the real surprise was how well Blair can play golf, winning 16 of 18 points in golf. We will be running this event again with the possibility of the tennis members challenging the golf members.

Interclub Report: Ann Stewart [email protected] SSTC had a most enjoyable Interclub exchange at Oak Bay - in spite of the fact that rain drenched their courts. Luckily, our host was able to find available courts in the Oak Bay Rec. Centre, and all 12 of us had good games and an enjoyable social time. We have just had another delightful day of tennis with the Oak Bay here at Portlock with a delicious potluck meal supervised by Rose at Fernando and Tami's home - very many thanks to them for all their help. There was also a cut-throat competition which we hold every year with Gabriola! A small team of three men and three women represented SSTA well . The date was June 11th. SSTA proudly regained possession of “ The Cup “ with a score of 72-41 or thereabouts – it was a bit lopsided, but a great time was had by all and play fitted neatly between showers !!! If anyone would like to join in , let Ann know, they do need spare/alternatives – the match is scheduled for Gabriola on July 9th Hoping to hear from enthusiastic players… Contact Ann Stewart

Instructional & Coaching Opportunities: Tennis Etiquette: Suzanne Tremblay [email protected] Not so long ago, there were four ladies playing a doubles match on Centre Court. After a few games, they stopped: no one could remember what the score was for the current game, nor where they were in the set…They agreed to a score that seemed fair to the four of them and went on playing. This little tale, sadly or funnily a true story, players’ names withheld, brought about a discussion on tennis etiquette: who is to announce score, when, and how to settle disagreement if any. I was tasked to write this article. Now those of you who know me will be giggling because I am learning these rules almost as I write them, being new to playing. If I got them wrong, I am confident one of you good souls will kindly correct me in a future edition of this notorious newletter. Here we go:

1. Announcing scores: The server is the person who announces the score, before serving…not while tossing the ball, but before serving. That way, if anyone disagrees, the person can voice her/his opinion before the ball is in play, and thus not disturb play. It’s easy enough to see that if you announce the score while tossing the ball, and you got it wrong, the discussion risks erupting while the ball is being returned…which may simply compound the problem as the next point will need to be discussed as well…or simply replayed.

2. Disagreeing with the said score: If you disagree with the said score, honesty and integrity dictate that you should speak out, explain your reasons and reach a consensus. Tennis players being very civilized by nature usually settle these matters amicably. It is usually simply a matter of comparing mental notes on the recent points…unless all four players suffer from some form of memory impairment, in which case the matter becomes more troublesome or funnier (you choose your option here). If the disagreement persists, then…good luck to you!

Page 17: Spring Summer 2013 Final Working - saltspringtennis.ca$634,810.63 less the HST rebates of $62,541.30 for a final cost of $572,269.33. The upper floor was finished at a cost of $4,413.22

17

3. Calling the ball in or out:

Regrettably, Centre Court is not yet equipped with a Chase review system to verify where the ball actually fell: did it clip the line or not? From across the court, it is very hard to tell sometimes. So it is the team receiving the ball that makes the call, even if you saw clearly that your ball was clearly “IN” and your opponents deem it “OUT”, you respectfully accept their call. Every body makes mistakes. Don’t worry, it is likely, they too will think you made a mistake also at some point. However, if because your opponent’s sight was glued on the ball, she didn’t see the line…and your opinion is sought, then speak with honesty. If it is a close call and you are not 100% sure the ball was “IN” or “OUT”, give your opponent the benefit of the doubt and the point!

4. Ending on time: We all get so wrapped up in our game, and it is very tempting sometimes to go on playing when we are one set each and at deuce in the final game of the third set at 5 games to 5 to finish it cleanly….but if another party is waiting to start playing their game, and your time is up, you must leave the court. Remember, this is just for fun.

5. Cursing and such things: Well…you know! Many of us are guilty of expressing our disappointment at a poor shot verbally…Mea culpa! Let’s remind ourselves that much of the beauty of this game lies in the players’ behavior on court and towards each other.

The most important thing is to have fun, respect the other players and enjoy yourself…

Thanks Suzanne

I don't have much going on SaltSpring as far clinics but I am hosting the Golf/Tennis Tournament June 16. I'm also running the Kids Tennis/Golf camps this August from the 12th-16th and 19th-23rd. Marj and I are going to do 2 camps in Whistler for adults.

Women's Only Camp- July 12-14. Extreme Art of Doubles Camp- August 1-4.

I will also be hosting my own Art of Doubles Camps on August 16-18 and September 20-22

Whistler. Check the Whistler Tennis website for further information. My private and group lesson programs are getting busier on SaltSpring which is nice, if I continue to get busier there then I won't have to do so much travelling. I'm also hoping to do a local camp on SaltSpring with Marj but can't confirm a date just yet --- stay tuned…

Pete's Tennis Tip

When playing doubles remember-- The middle solves the riddle !!!

Hitting through the middle has many benefits, first there may be confusion on who is going to take it,

and second it is a great way of bringing a player to the inside

then following it up with an outside shot… hopefully for a Winner !!!

You are sure to impress with this strategy…

Court Maintenance Report: Pat Lazenby [email protected] Fulford Court: .. Fulford has problems with bubbles and the fence, but Lorraine has it under control. There is also a rumble that the Pickle Ball players are canvassing for red lines on the Fulford Court… nice to see some more action down there --- it is a truly lovely setting… Portlock Courts: Pat had reported the problems with nets on 3 & 4 and PARC manager, Lorraine Brewster is all over it for us… Centre Court: Thanks to Colin Lawler, Ron Miville. Ben Neufeld. Michael Powell - the dreaded screws & bolts in the gutters at Centre Court are now covered with corks… This will cut down on injuries when collecting those wayward balls… A great job putting on the corks, but emptying the bottles to get the corks went way above and beyond the call of duty.. well done guys… and Pat…
