MAJOR: Fashion Merchandising - Product DevelopmentINTERNSHIP: Sales Intern - Jill Stuart New York, New York, NY

My approach to finding a fashion merchandising internship was to narrow down my search to a few different specializations that were the most interesting to me. When I interviewed at Jill Stuart I had a strong feeling that I would enjoy the work and the environment, so when I was offered the position I said yes immediately.

Although most people would think that a sales intern would always be out on the sales floor, many of the tasks I was assigned were computer-based and I worked on them in the office.I created ecommerce sales reports, recorded data for weekly selling reports from our buyers, and created line lists. Thankfully, I was also able to assist in meetings with buyers and provide them with samples of the garments they chose. For me the most rewarding part of the internship was actually applying my practiced skills to real situations, and finding that I was very capable in doing so.

My supervisor was absolutely wonderful. And, she is a recent Marist alumna. She was kind, helpful, and encouraging toward me. It is a unique situation to report to someone who has graduated from Marist. It lets you see that Marist graduates go on to play important roles in the workplace. And, I was able to establish a professional relationship with someone who has the same educational background.

Networking opportunities were certainly available and it was very important to me to be friendly and helpful toward everyone I met, so that I could make a good impression. It is good to feel as though you will be able to reach out in the future to the people you meet during your internship.

Jill Stuart is a fairly small company so I doubt there would be an opening by the time I graduate. However, if they made me a job offer, I have to say that I’ve enjoyed my work and the environment enough to want to be a full-time employee.

My advice to Marist students is that it is necessary to view internships as a practical learning opportunity during which you can apply the skills you have been taught in the classroom. It might seem hard to keep yourself motivated if your internship is not paid, but it is up to you to get as much as you can out of the experience. It can also be tricky to find the right internship, especially if you have never applied for one before. But persistence and hard work always pay off!

MAJOR: Fine Arts/Studio Art - Digital Media TrackMINORS: AdvertisingINTERNSHIP: Art/Photo Intern - Westchester Magazine, Rye, NY

I have been interested in a career in business, yet my passion is art. As a media assistant for the Marist Center for Multicultural Affairs I became interested in the magazine industry to use my art for business. When offered a summer internship with Westchester Magazine in their art/photo department, I was very excited to learn about designing a magazine.

At first my tasks included making photo requests and assisting with layout designs. What I did not expect, and what I enjoyed the most, was setting up and working at photo shoots. I assisted with shoots for food and chef articles, one on local small businesses, and a fashion shoot. I was asked to manage shoots when my supervisor was unavailable. I learned what goes into producing a photo that will be used in a spread. Not only does it have to look good, but you also have to think about it in terms of page layout and where text will be placed. I enjoyed this so much that I would put in extra time during the week.

I had two supervisors: the group creative director and the fashion and style editor. I enjoyed working with both because they made sure that, in addition to my regular tasks, I had the opportunity to work on aspects of the magazine that were interesting to me.

Networking opportunities were plentiful. In addition to the office staff, there were after work events, including the Best of Westchester Party, a huge event hosted by Westchester Magazine every summer. I met amazing people out on photo shoots, including a high-end fashion photographer who was particularly impressed with my work.

Now, the magazine industry is somewhere I picture myself working long-term. I especially valued the atmosphere and people at my internship. Everyone worked well together and enjoyed the work.

My advice to other Marist students is to do more than you are asked in your internship. When you show initiative, you will stand out to your supervisors as someone who is dedicated to the field and is willing to put in the extra time and effort. They will remember that when your resume crosses their desk should you apply for a job or need a letter of recommendation.

MAJOR: Communication - Sports Communication and Public RelationsINTERNSHIP: Promotions and Public Relations Intern - Rockland Boulders Baseball Club, Pomona, NY

I chose the internship with the Rockland Boulders Baseball Club because it gave me the best opportunity to build my skills in sports communications and public relations. Since I came to Marist to learn the fundamentals for this type of job (and for this sport) it also offered me real world experience to add to what I learned in my courses. It was a true “hands on” opportunity.

My intern tasks and responsibilities were to run the Rockland Boulders Baseball Club’s social media accounts. This is very important in this day and age. I posted to Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat throughout games. In addition, I had the opportunity to write game recaps that appeared on the team website. Other responsibilities included preparing the ballpark before the gates opened to visitors and helping to run on-field events between innings.

My supervisor was always very helpful. He gave me excellent insights into improving my writing skills. This is something that cannot be learned in the classroom. He also allowed the other interns and me to include some of our own ideas to help make the social media accounts reach a wider audience. When I reflect on this experience, I did not expect to take away as much learning from this internship as I did. I learned a great deal and had fun doing it!

What I enjoyed most at this internship was getting to know how other interns go about doing the same work. Everyone writes articles in different ways and everyone has their own approach to social media. This is very valuable information and something I never expected to enjoy learning.

I was able to network with the current employees of the Baseball Club, interns from other schools who have the same college major, and members of the media. It was a wonderful opportunity to “pick their brains” and learn more about public relations and sports.

If I were offered a fulltime job with the Rockland Boulders, I would definitely accept. The amount I learned as an intern makes me excited to think about how much more I would learn as a full time employee!

My advice to future interns from Marist is to be a sponge. It is okay to come into an internship and feel like you don’t know very much. Be sure to ask a lot of questions. You have to absorb as much information as you possibly can. You definitely learn more about the workplace as an intern than you do in a classroom, but you have to want to learn; and if you do, you will.

Colby Gray JUNIOR

MAJOR: Information Technology & Systems / Information SystemsMINORS: Business and MathematicsINTERNSHIP: Supply Chain Data Analytics Intern - Infineon Technologies AG, Munich, Germany

Infineon is a large, multi-national company and I thought moving to Germany for a summer would be an amazing experience. I was right! The people I worked with taught me a great deal about the world because they were from many different countries. I will be forever grateful for this opportunity.

The multiple projects I was assigned to were focused on the business supply chain. I developed applications dealing with “big data,” a term for data sets that are so large or complex that traditional data processing applications are inadequate to deal with them. I wrote queries for databases with millions of rows. I worked on web page design for digital business applications. I also ran algorithms to look for Key Performance Indicator correlations, which is a metric used to determine performance against business objectives. I created PowerPoint presentations and explained my findings to groups of high profile business people.

My supervisor was the Head of Supply Chain Innovations, an incredible man who taught me how to be professional and, in particular, how to give presentations that were succinct and geared toward the audience. The people I presented to were business rather than technology oriented; they weren’t interested in the technical aspects of my work. I learned how to simplify my presentations and get straight to the point.

It was my responsibility to arrange my own housing for the summer (which was another amazing learning experience). I lived with a roommate in three different AirBNB accommodations, one each month. A stipend from Infineon helped pay for housing.

Something I appreciated about Germany is that the workplace is very laid back. You could come and go as you wanted as long as you met the required number of hours for the week. This flexibility relieved the stress of worrying about being late. Since the internship was paid, I used most of my earnings to travel with other interns around Europe.

Networking opportunities were plentiful, in part because Infineon’s interns come from all over the world - India, United Kingdom, Netherlands, China, Iran, France, Spain, Italy, Ireland, Greece, to name a few. It was a very culturally rich environment. I developed relationships with employees who would vouch for me if I need references for a new job

My advice to Marist students is to start looking as early as possible for internships. Try to get an internship after your sophomore year, as it will make finding one after your junior year much easier. Apply to anything that peaks your interest!

Michelle LaGrutta SENIOR

MAJOR: Media Studies - Interactive Media & Game DesignMINORS: Public RelationsINTERNSHIP: PR Intern - Sandbox Strategies, New York, NY Sandbox Strategies is a small PR firm that works with different entities in the video game industry. I reached out to the company because I have always wanted to work in the games industry and public relations is something that I find interesting and rewarding. Working at Sandbox Strategies fulfilled both criteria!

My responsibilities fell under many different categories; usually I am assisting staff members with their assignments. Many of these tasks include writing up releases, tracking press coverage, compiling contact lists, and preparing client interview docs. Researching is an important skill for my position. Much of my time is spent researching various games, influencers, and developers. My favorite assignments are the ones where I get to help test out games from our clients!

One of my favorite things about my internship at Sandbox Strategies is the office environment. I am very lucky to be working with employees that are caring and always willing to help each other. Very often, someone from the office will take the time to sit with me and teach me something new about anything related to PR and business in the games industry. And, because Sandbox Strategies is such a small firm, it will be very easy for me to contact any of the employees for future networking opportunities.

I enjoy working alongside my supervisor. She is personable and quick to help me with any questions that I have. Her assignments are flexible and she is always sure to compliment a job well done.

If I was offered a job at Sandbox Strategies, I would definitely take it! I love the work that I did there and the people with whom I worked. I am extremely comfortable with how the firm operates. Working there made me realize that this is definitely an industry that fits my skills and personality.

My advice to Marist students applying for internships is to take on different challenges in the workplace, even if it entails something with which you are unfamiliar. Internships are only temporary, so they are a great opportunity to test the waters in different industries! I was very unfamiliar with working in PR outside of my classes, but I grew to love it. Also, I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to continue working at Sandbox Strategies beyond the spring semester and into the summer for a paid internship.
