Dear Members,It’s that time of the year when we all breathe a sigh of relief-- winter is

almost on the way out and we can almost catch sight of spring peeking through the snow. But while winter is still around, The J’s got plenty of ways to keep you warmed up, active and out of the cold.

Athletes of all ages and fitness levels will find momentum on the track, bikes and in the pool for our 8th annual Triathlon and Biathlon on February 22. A little sweat will go a long way to support The J as all funds raised support our outstanding programs and services. This event sells out early so race to register at www.mandeljcc.org/triathlon.

Up next is our Sing Into Spring Early Childhood fundraiser on March 22. Join us for 90 minutes of nonstop food, fun and fundraising that features entertainment, a cereal bar and a truly one-of-a-kind silent auction! Bring your children or grandchildren for a fabulous family-friendly morning! (see page 2)

Registration for J-Day Camps and Camp Wise is in full swing! Our award-winning summer camps are truly exceptional and there’s plenty to be excited about.

This year the sounds of a typical summer day at J-Day Camps – singing, splashing, laughing and cheering – will soon be heard alongside Boker Tov (good morning) and Ma Nishma (how are you?). The J’s Anisfield Day Camp is proud to offer a new immersive 8-week Hebrew language experience for children entering kindergarten and first grade (see page 17). And to make it more convenient for parents to send their kids to day camp, The J will be offering community busing at select locations throughout the eastside (see page 17).

Our nationally-recognized Camp Wise overnight camp boasts expanded programs in archery and horseback riding plus new jet skis and lake inflatables. New intro sessions are perfect for first time campers who want to get a taste of overnight camp. Not sure which session is right for your child? Our camp staff is ready to assist! Please call or email with any questions you may have at (216) 593-6250 or [email protected]. (See pages 18-19 for more info).

Star Trac HumanSport, The J’s new, multi-dimensional, state-of-the-art fitness equipment debuted in January. Members quickly discovered how easy and, dare we say, fun, the equipment is for all ages and fitness levels. With treadmills, kettlebells, Yoga and small group training classes, there are countless ways to stay or get in shape at The J. (Fitness offerings can be found on pages 22-25)

In closing, it’s a wonderful time to be a member of The J. Whether it’s the songs and laughter from a preschool Shabbat program or the camaraderie and support of a group fitness class, you, our members are truly what keep The J in motion. Thank you for your participation and membership. We look forward to seeing you often.

preschool & ChildcareRanked Highest in Quality in a National Survey of Large JCCs Two Years in a Row!Half-day preschool and Full-day childcare – ages 18 months to pre-K

The Mandel JCC Early Childhood Center is committed to excellence in early care and education. Our program is inspired by Sheva (the Hebrew word for seven), a national JCCa program which guides our values, engagement and pursuit of excellence:• Children are Natural Learners: Our teachers inspire

children to question their world and to appreciate multiple perspectives.

• early Childhood Directors as Visionaries: Our director works with parents, teachers and The J’s leadership to cultivate a diverse and vibrant learning community.

• early Childhood educators are professionals: Our educators are lifelong learners, always engaging in professional development.

• Families as engaged Learners: Our families are valued and appreciated, supported by on-going activities that strengthen our school community.

• environments as an Inspiration for Inquiry: Our classrooms provide spaces that provoke children’s wonder, curiosity, intellectual engagement and creative expression.

• Discover CaTCH as Sh’mirat HaGuf (taking care of our bodies): Our wellness curriculum supports children’s physical activity and knowledge about healthy eating.

• Israel as the Story of the Jewish people: Our educators create a connection with Israel through classroom activities and holiday celebrations.

What We BelieveEarly Childhood Education is more than preparing

children for future success in school. It is about honoring the process of childhood and supporting every child in realizing his or her full potential.

Children learn best through play – they develop physically, cognitively, psychologically, emotionally, socially and linguistically. It is how they learn about themselves, other people and the world around them. Play reflects the natural rhythms of children’s concentration and curiosity. It is through play that children develop the skills of formal education including reading, math and science.

How We BehaveWe view relationships as the primary vehicle

through which individuals learn and mature. Our school functions like a healthy family and our adult relationships serve as positive models for children to emulate. Our teachers never stop being students – they understand that growth and learning is as vital to them as it is to children.

programs feature: • Outstanding, highly-trained and experienced educators• Full and half-day programs for children 18 months – Pre-K• Developmentally appropriate and enriching curriculum• Celebrations of Jewish holidays, Shabbat, and Jewish values• American Red Cross swim lessons & Yoga instruction for

Campers who will be entering Kindergarten and first grade in the fall of 2015 will have the option to participate in this special program where they will engage in all Anisfield camp activities while learning to understand and speak Hebrew naturally, by listening to and speaking with their counselors and friends.
