The time has finally arrived for our school store. In an effort to increase school spirit, fund the Distributive Educational Clubs of America chapter (DECA), and re-duce apparel costs for students and parents, a school-based store will be an educational tool used to prepare students with real-life experience. DECA students will be able to use marketing, inventory, and financial skills that will be essential in the retail industry. This will also give the students a powerful lesson that will help them succeed at DECA competitions. The entire student body, as well as faculty, staff, and parents, will be able to display their school pride with some of the latest spirit wear. This store is where students, par-ents, faculty, and alumni would be

able to purchase Diman apparel and other products, pay for them in a secure manner and pick up their items at the school. When the product is low, the school store could replenish uniform inventory. Our costs for producing uniform shirts would save parents about 18%. The store will also be used as a teaching tool to promote marketing and retail sales. Students involved in DECA will learn how to order, inventory, cost, mark up, and deliv-er goods purchased by consumers. Students would be exposed to the 4 P’s of marketing: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. Lastly, the store would have the potential to create a revenue stream to assist the school pay for DECA events and competitions.

Shane played all four years as a varsity defenseman for Diman. As jersey #14, he played for Head Coach Dutra and Assistant Coach O’Connor. As a junior, he became assistant captain for the team and captain, in his senior year. His Diman career netted him 16 goals, and 39 as-sists, leaving him with a total combined score of 55.

Q: When did you first learn to skate? I learned to skate at the age of 3 at the “Learn-to-Skate” program at Driscoll Arena. However, I fell and told my family I didn’t want to play hockey or skate anymore.

Q: What made you change your mind to play hockey? When I was 7, I was given a pair of rollerblades for Christmas. I rollerbladed in my driveway all the time, and that made me change my mind. I wanted to follow in my older brother’s footsteps.

Q: What is your favorite team and player? I have two favorite teams, the Arizona Coyotes and Bos-ton Bruins. My favorite player is Oliver Eckman-Larsson of the Arizona Coyotes.

Q: Who has been your greatest influence? My older brother Zach, has been my greatest influence. He played varsity goalie for Diman and graduated in 2014.

Q: What was your most memorable game?Any of the games we played against Somerset-Berkley. I’m from Somerset, so it was exciting to play against my former grade school and middle school teammates.

Q: What was your most humbling experience? The most humbling experience was the game against Hanover in the MIAA State Tournament. The final score was 10-2. We had been tied in the first quarter.

Q: What was your best moment? The best was hitting 55 points against Cape Cod Tech at the end of this regular season (January 2018).

BOY’S VARSITY BASEBALLThe varsity baseball team is having a good season. We are 8-6 as of this writing, and the team needs one more victory to qualify for the state tournament. We are currently in second place in the Mayflower Large League. Junior Daniel Perron is having a tremendous year, batting .488 with 5 home runs, 19 runs batted in, and 19 scored runs. GIRL’S VARSITY SOFTBALLThe varsity softball team earned the co-championship of the Vocational Mayflower Large League conference and also qualified for the Division III South Sectional State Tournament. Leading the team offensively are Mya Parker, Kaylee Kochanek, Sarah Alston and Courtney Hafey. Leading the team defensively are Parker, Hafey, Kochanek, and Madison Teixeira. The Bengal pitchers are Alston and Hailey Rod-erick. The Bengals await seeding in the tournament, which will be June 6th. The lone senior Bengal this year is Captain Makenzie Teixeira.

SPRING TRACKThe Diman boys spring track team completed their meet season with an unde-feated record 8-0. They also won the Mayflower League Championship Meet in convincing fashion. The team placed second at the Massachusetts Vocational State Championships. There were several state qualifiers, including James Vacanti, To-pher Frank, and Evan Vasconcellos in the 400 meter, Curtis Melo in the 400 hur-dles, Edwin Fuentes in the long jump, and Javyir Stanley in the 200 meter. The relay teams also qualified for the MIAA state meet, setting the 4 x 100 school record of 44.55 and the 4 x 800 set a school record of 8:37. The 4 x 100 team is Edwin Fuen-tes, Jacob Faris, Javyir Stanley and Nick Demers. The 4 x 800 team is Colin Melo, Curtis Melo, Nate Boardman, and Evan Vasconcellos.

Most impressive was Junior Zack Poitras who is moving on the the All State meet after throwing the javelin 160 feet at the d3 state meet.

Also, the Diman girls track team completed a rebuilding yea,r winning 3 meets and losing 4. There were many notable contributions by young athletes, includ-ing sophomores Kim Lajoie and Shakira Joseph and freshmen Lorilei Hetzler and Alexia Correira. Kim Lajoie became the first Diman female track athlete to qualify for the MIAA D3 track meet in some time, qualifying in the 100 meter dash. The future is bright!

TENNISIn their first season back since the 90’s, the boy’s tennis team managed an impres-sive record of 3-5 in the Mayflower League, with an overall record of 5-7 in MIAA play. Senior co-captain Adam Moniz had a standout season at the second singles spot, going 7-6 while ending the season on a 6-match win streak. First singles play-er, sophomore Landon Begin, finished the season 6-7, losing a close non-league match to finish the season with an even record. The rookie of the year award goes to sophomore Tyler “TT” Tavares, who picked up the sport this year, and led the team in doubles wins. Thanks to all faculty, staff and students for all the support of the new team!

Book ReviewWinter

Eleanor and Park is one of my favorite books out there.Eleanor and Park is a romance between two high school kids named Eleanor Douglas and Park Sheridan. Eleanor and Park is based in the mid-80s, men-tioning famous rock bands and comic books of the time. The story opens with the nightmare every “New Kid in School” (in this case, Eleanor) faces – the school bus. The bus is loud and crazy with students who don’t know how to behave themselves. Everyone has their place, and Eleanor struggles because she’s a very outgoing and different person so she is looked down on. It’s only when Park takes pity and gives her a seat that their relationship begins. These two live very different lives, both at home and at school. Not only do they look drastically different, with Eleanor being a large redhead and Park being a skinny student with Korean parents, but they also see the world in a different mindset and don’t always see eye-to-eye. Somehow, they learn how to not only get along, but also get closer with each other than with anyone else before. This is a very realistic and relatable book especially when it comes to romance in high school. With constant fighting, trouble at home, and a love that feels like it will last forever, Eleanor and Park pulls hearts strings, makes you laugh and cry. It is definitely one of the best books in our library.

BOY’S VARSITY BASKETBALL This winter was a good one in the Peter Goy Auditorium at Diman, as our basketball teams rode the home-court advantage to a combined 16-4 home record en route to a pair of playoff berths. The boys’ home record of 9-1 helped propel them to a 13-7 season and a #11 seed in the state playoffs, while the girls went 7-3 at home for a 12-8 season record and a #13 playoff seed. The boys finished 10-2 vs vocational schools and qualified to the State Vocational Tournament. The team defeated Westport, Connolly, South-eastern, and Blue Hills in the same season, which had not been done before. We had a very well balanced team where we had multiple May-flower All Stars: Ryan Motta, Lyndon Carreiro, and Adam Moniz. Jordan Brodeur had a few outstanding games, including a great performance vs Westport, and Mason Gomes led us in a victory over Old Colony. Curtis and Collin Melo were consistent on defense and organizing the attack. The team started 2-5 but then went on a 7-game winning streak. Ryan Motta set what is thought to be a school record for 3 pointers, with 40 total from beyond the arc.

WINTER TRACK FINALS The Boys finished their regular season with a record of 3-3 against the our EAC opponents and had dominating performances against Division 1 teams Durfee and New Bedford HS in an unscored exhibition meet. Capping of the season, the Bengals finished second at the EAC League meet, the first time Diman has ever competed in that meet! The Girls team wrapped up their season with a record of 1-5, finishing 5th in the EAC League Meet, as well as dominating against Division 1 teams Durfee and New Bedford HS in an unscored exhibition meet. The postseason ended with several athletes qualifying for the Division 3 State Meet as well as the Janiak Freshman/Sophomore meet.

VARSITY HOCKEY This year’s young hockey squad battled to a 5-13-2 record, with victories over Durfee (twice), South Shore, Upper Cape, and New Bedford Voke. Coach Dutra says the team improved in ways that didn’t show up on the scoreboard, and should be poised for success next year.

This was the inaugural year for the Diman DECA chapter. The team consisted 30 registered students across 10 shops and three grade levels. Initiated by DECA Advisor, Mr. Machado and senior, Elijah Fullerton, the team did exceptionally well in their first year, earning several district and state wins. The Diman DECA chapter will be involved in launching the new Diman Store coming this fall.

With over 200,000 high school members, DECA is a international organization that prepares business-sav-vy students for careers in management, marketing, hospitality, and financing. Students may participate in a variety of competi-tions, including role-plays, a presentation, or a 30-page business plan pertaining to their respective fields of interest. Similar to SkillsUSA, there are three levels to challenge students: Districts, States, and Internationals.Diman’s DECA chapter was instituted this year by senior and chapter President, Elijah Fullerton, who believed the competition would bring much opportunity to students interested in pursuing business. “DECA allows students to distinguish themselves when applying to colleges and even offers scholarships to chapter lead-ers,” Fullerton explains. On January 10th, twenty-two students made the trip to compete in the DECA District 8 Conference in Falmouth. Diman emerged with thirteen medals from the mini-awards session, which rec-

ognized those who had performed the best on the written exam and the two role-play events. The grand awards ceremony then announced the top four teams in each category that would be progressing onto the State Conference. Impressively, six Diman competitors placed. These six students journeyed to Boston from March 8-10 to compete in the 59th

Massachusetts State Career Development Conference and were accompa-nied by senior Kylie Cooper and junior Sara Almeida, winners of the Massa-chusetts SCDC Program Cover Design contest and State Pin Design contest, respectively. Di-man came back

from the conference with junior Marcus Banoub placing amongst the top ten in the Retail Merchandising category. As its first year as a DECA chapter, Diman performed exceedingly well. The conferences provided limitless opportunities and truly allowed our students to start building their legacies. Of course, none of this would’ve been possible without the help and support of chapter advisor, Mr. Raymond Machado of Graphic Commu-nications. We also thank Mrs. Lois Miller and Mrs. Tracey Collins for chaperoning the District and State Conference trips.Cooper and Almeida attended the DECA International Career Development Conference as part of the Leadership Academy for winning the State design contests. ICDC was held on April 21-24 in Atlanta, Georgia. Congratulations and excellent work to all competitors!
