Beyond Munch & Move workshop - 20th August 2015

On Thursday 20th August, the Western Sydney Local Health District held their

first ‘Beyond Munch & Move’ workshop at Rooty Hill RSL which was delivered

by the Early Childhood Training and Resource Centre (ECTARC).

38 services attended and participated in the day’s activities which involved a

range of practical healthy eating and physical activity ideas (including

fundamental movement skills) to extend on the Munch & Move key messages

and practices, as well as some lucky door prize giveaways!

The workshop was a great success with over 90% of participants reporting

feeling confident about using the ideas to make both MUNCH and MOVE

changes at their service after the workshop.

Three more ’Beyond Munch & Move’ workshops will be held during

September, October and November as well as more in 2016. To find out more

information or to submit an expression of interest, please contact your

Munch & Move support officer (details on previous page).

Please note that places in these workshops are limited and will be prioritised

for those services who are currently meeting less than 80% of the Munch &

Move Program Adoption Practices.

“My Lunchbox” CHORUS

My lunchbox, my lunchbox

What would I like in my (clap) lunchbox?

Healthy food that will help me to play

I would like healthy food today

A tasty sandwich with salad and cheese

Yoghurt and fruit – “Oh yes please!”

Just what I love to eat for lunch

Healthy food is what I love to munch

CHORUS

A tuna sandwich and a plum

Vegetable sticks – “Oh yum yum!”

Healthy food that will help me to grow

Healthy food is the way to go

CHORUS x 2

I love healthy food in my lunchbox

“THANKS” (children’s voice)

From the FREE Munch & Move CD Songbook availa-ble for download at: www.healthykids.nsw.gov.au or contact your Munch and Move support officer

for a copy.

This song will encourage children to enjoy having

healthy food in their lunchbox. It provides ideas of

healthy food they could have for lunch and snacks

and teaches them that healthy food will help them

to grow.

FMS Focus: Leaping What is leaping?

A graceful long step so the body lifts off the ground to cover a distance or go over a low obstacle. A short run before a leap aids the momentum of the leap.

Does it looks right? Detect and Correct:

Take off on one foot and land on the opposite one

There should be a brief period where both feet are off the ground

The arm opposite the lead foot should reach forward during the leap

Practicing the Skill

As with all Fundamental Movement Skills practice is needed! You could try:

Hurdles—place some small objects on the ground which will act as hurdles for the children to leap over.

Leap frog—encourage children to leap from one lily pad to another

Obstacle courses—get the children to leap over “streams” and “rivers” made up of different objects to avoid the alligators!

Ensure that you are tracking each child’s skill development and provide opportunities for

all 12 skills to be attempted. For more ideas, refer to the resources FMS with Franky &

Friends, Fundamental Movement Skills in Action: FMS for 3-5 year olds, or USB!

Healthy Ears Happy Kids - NSW Aboriginal Ear Health Program

As part of the NSW Health’s Aboriginal Ear Health Program to help prevent

otitis media (middle ear infection) in Aboriginal children aged 0-6 years, a

range of educational resources are available for use by early childhood

education and care services, schools, health professionals and families.

The Healthy Ears Happy Kids resources (pictured) aim to

raise awareness of good ear health for Aboriginal

children 0-6 years. Healthy Ears Happy Kids resources are

fun and easy to read educational and promotional

material including storybooks, posters, brochures,

stickers and caps.

PRESCHOOLERS ARE SPENDING TOO MUCH TIME SITTING DOWN!

A recent article published in The Daily Telegraph described sitting as the “new

smoking” among adults. Researchers have estimated that Australian kids who

are in preschool, spend half of the time there sitting which increases their

risk of health, growth and development problems.

Midson Road Child Care Centre, who feature in this article, support regular

physical activity at their service through providing both structured and free

play opportunities including focusing on one fundamental movement skill

(FMS) per week in each room. To ensure that parents are informed about FMS

and educators can plan a series of activities to use the FMS, there is a

permanent space in their daily curriculum for this information. Great work

Midson Child Care Centre!

If you need ideas on supplementing or increasing the amount of physical

activity at your service, there are several Munch & Move resources available

including the MOVE LEARNING section of the resource manual, FMS with

Franky & Friends, Physical Activity for Babies and Toddlers, and FMS in

Action: Fundamental movement Skills for 3-5 years resources.

GOOD NEWS STORY!

We can all relate to celebrating birthdays in our services and some of the

decadent cakes families provide. This year Tregear Presbyterian Preschool

started a new fruit birthday ‘cake’ initiative. The service offers to make cakes

for children’s birthday cakes for a nominal fee and purchase fresh seasonal

fruit and make a cake using the fruit.

Not only is providing fruit as a cake a healthier option, the service reports that

it also creates less waste as the kids love it. Director Bernadette Reyes says that

“The children actually enjoy it more than the sweet cakes. When we have them

at the preschool, it’s all finished in a few minutes unlike the cupcakes. The

parents are also happy about it as they don’t have to worry about buying cakes

to celebrate their child’s birthday.” Check out their creations below!

Thanks and well done Tregear Presbyterian Preschool!
