Formative Assessment: It's in the Plans!
Understanding the relationship between assessment and instruction is vital to designing lessons that reach all students. When planned with instruction, not after instruction, the assessment of students can be a beneficial practice that improves learning and saves instructional time. The goal of this session is to move teachers from understanding the need for assessment to intentionally planning for successful assessment integration in the classroom. Participants will learn how to employ a variety of assessment and instruction planning strategies so that assessment results are not just data but meaningful information that holds the key to true differentiation.

Making Rigorous Instruction a Reality
When educators discuss “increasing rigor” in classrooms, what do they really mean? Understanding the implications of new standards means looking beyond the buzzwords and creating deeper, more complex learning that reveals students’ full potential. This session will help teachers interpret new standards in terms of learning levels and complexity. Close examination of both the Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy (RBT) and Webb’s Depth of Knowledge (DOK) will be paired with analysis and application of teaching practices best matched to the rigor of new Common Core and NC Essential Standards.

The Science of Learning: Teachers are "Neuro-Plasticians"
Teachers change brains. Whether the changes increase or impede learning about the content they teach is dependent on how each student’s brain receives the information. Teachers who understand the connections between brain function and educational practice can increase the probability that desired learning takes place. In this session participants learn what neurosciences have clarified about the Information Processing Model, neuroplasticity, the strong link between emotions and learning, and how the brain builds neural schemas. When teachers understand the “science of learning” they can increase student achievement by intentionally designing instruction to complement how the brain works.
