Spring Catechetical Conference held in Philadelphia

Philadelphia, Pa.— Almost 100 catechists, religious, clergy and seminarians from the Philadelphia Archeparchy participated in the Spring Catechetical Conference held here Saturday, March 30, 2019.

The theme of the

conference, sponsored by the Catechetical Department of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia, was “God’s Word and Catechesis.” The theme was taken from a pastoral letter of the same name “God’s Word and Catechesis”

issued on December 12, 2018 from Patriarch Sviatoslav and the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church to the Clergy, Religious and all the Laity.

Bishop Andriy Rabiy, apostolic administrator,

began the program at 9:30 am with an opening prayer and words of welcome. He served as moderator for the conference throughout the day.

Rev. Dr. Mark Morozowich, STD, dean of the School of Theology and Religious Studies at The Catholic University of America and a priest incardinated in St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Parma, was the first presenter.

During his presentation on “The Liturgy of the Word” Father Mark captivated the audience with his ability to give examples from Sacred Scripture and its relationship to the Divine Liturgy, especially the Liturgy of the Word. He explained through many examples, what the praying community

Spring Catechetical Conference held in Philadelphia(continued from previous page)

is actually spiritually experiencing during the Divine Liturgy.

Ms. Kelly Anderson, a PhD candidate and associate professor at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia, gave an overview of the structure and Books of the Bible, both the Old and New Testaments.

In keeping with her presentation entitled “Holy Scripture: What is it? How to read and pray it?” Ms. Anderson offered many very interesting insights how we are to understand the Sacred Scripture and explained how to read and pray with Holy

Scripture, through the Divine Reading “lectio divina.” Lectio Divina has four separate steps: read; meditate; pray; contemplate. First a short passage of scripture is read, then its meaning is reflected upon. This is followed by prayer and contemplation on the

Word of God.

The final presentation was by Chrystina A. Dolyniuk, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at Rider University, Lawrenceville,

Bishop Andriy Rabiy and Ms. Kelly Anderson

Rev. Dr. Mark Morozowich, STD

NJ. Her topic was “Teaching Catechism: A Developmental Perspective on Attention, Cognition and Learning.”

She tried to provide insights to answer the practical question, “How do we capture and keep children’s attention during Catechism lessions?” She reminded everyone that children, even though the same age, are at different stages of cognitive development and have different learning skills and attention spans. A teacher must be aware of these differences when working with children in a classroom setting. She also drew upon her own experiences in the Ukrainian Catholic Church as a wife and mother and as a former catechist.

March 26, 2019

Give from the Heart for the Inauguration of Ministry

of Archbishop Borys Gudziak Glory to Jesus Christ! The Ukrainian Catholic community in the United States is rejoicing at the news that Pope Francis has appointed a new Metropolitan-Archbishop for the Archeparchy of Philadelphia on February 18, 2019. A native of Syracuse, NY, Bishop Borys Gudziak, will be formally enthroned on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 in the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Philadelphia, PA. You are cordially invited to join us for this moment of prayer, communion and outreach, uniting bishops, clergy, religious and faithful as brothers and sisters in Christ. I am writing to you today to ask you to help us raise money for the start of Archbishop Borys’s ministry. An eight-day period of events is planned for his enthronement in thanksgiving to God for providing our Archeparchy with a new spiritual shepherd. This program named “Heart to Heart” will take place in Philadelphia, PA and in Washington, DC from June 2nd to 9th. It should spiritually encourage participants in an enduring way and be capacity building for the archeparchy: •Praying for the Descent of the Holy Spirit to foster our relationship with God and our neighbor— “Heart to Heart”; •Promoting and nurturing relations within the Archeparchy and Metropolia, with the Archdiocese in Philadelphia, the city’s Ukrainian-Americans and with the local community at large, with our brothers and sisters from other eparchies, countries, rites, and Churches; •Engaging the youth “heart to heart,” putting young people at the center of the Church’s mission. Recognizing the rich legacy of our ancestors and handing it on, enhanced, to a new generation.

Another event planned is a Youth Day on Saturday, June 8th at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral in Philadelphia. We are asking youth from the Philadelphia Archeparchy as well as those in neighboring eparchies to come join us for a day of prayer and fun! The enthronement, the Youth Day, and the other community-building activities all have costs associated with them. Please find it in your heart to give generously to the Archeparchy of Philadelphia for the inauguration of ministry of Archbishop Borys Gudziak. •Please click on the link to donate online for the purpose of the “Heart to Heart” program: Donate by credit card or PayPal: www.ukrarcheparchy.us/donate. •Or you can send a check payable to “Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia”, and mail to Archeparchy of Philadelphia, 810 N. Most Reverend Bishop Andriy Rabiy visits Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

On March 24, 2019, parishioners of Annunciation of BVM in Melrose Park warmly welcomed Bishop Andriy, the Apostolic Administrator of the Philadelphia Archeparchy, on the occasion of their patronal feast day. The Bishop was greeted by Myroslawa Hill and Roman Dubenko with the traditional bread and salt and was presented with a beautiful bouquet of flowers by a young parishioner, Liliana Nestor.

Hierarchical Liturgy followed with Bishop Andriy as the main celebrant and Reverend Ihor Bloshchynskyy, pastor, as concelebrant. In his inspirational homily, Bishop Andriy spoke about the life of the Blessed Mother and her submission to the will of God.

Following the Divine Liturgy, over a hundred parishioners enjoyed a luncheon as well as a short program presented by the children of the parish, Adriana Doyle, Adriana Soltys and Leanna Soltys, piano selections by Anastasiya Bloshchynskyy and a sing

along of religious songs with Mrs. Bohdanna Yarosevych playing the bandura.

We thank Bishop Andriy for his visit which made our parish celebration even more special.

On March 10, 2019, the children of the D.C. area got an opportunity to greet our new Metropolitan Archbishop, Borys Gudziak. This included the children from the Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family in Washington D.C. and the children of SS Joachim and Anna Ukrainian Catholic Church in Front Royal, VA, a mission parish of the Archeparchy of Philadelphia.

Children from Holy Family (picture top right) included Anna Fulmer, who presented Metropolitan Borys with flowers and Lazarus McCarthy who presented him with the traditional greeting of bread and salt.

Seven altar servers from three different families from SS Joachim and Anna (picture middle right) made the hour and a half long trip to D.C. to serve Divine Liturgy. Max and Gus Luckey, Liam Philbin, Max, Christopher,

Brendon and Francis Germain all thought it was a great honor and privilege to be able to serve with Archbishop Borys. Also pictured are Bishop John Bura, Fr. Robert Hitchens, Fr. Wasyl Kharuk. the seminarians of St. Josephat Seminary, and Fr. Mark Morozowich, Dean of the School of Theolo-gy and Religious Studies at Catholic University. Metropolitan Borys spoke to each of the altar servers, asking them their names and invited all the chil-dren to his Enthronement Ceremony in

Philadelphia on June 4. Each one of the boys are signed up for the bus and will be attending.

After Divine Liturgy, there was a reception in the church hall. Altar serv-ers coming from SS Joachim and Anna (picture middle right) claimed their table front and center.

In the picture on the bottom right we see Archbishop Borys speaking to Anna Fulmer (age 10) and Victoria Fulmer (age 9) about his Heart to Heart program. “Will you help me?” The Archbishop asked. Anna gave him a most definite “yes.” She will help him.

Lazarus was a very well-known man in Beth-any, and there must have been many guests at the funeral and many mourners with his sisters at the cemetery garden when Jesus came there to perform this miracle.

What a spectacle it must have been! How often does someone see a man, especially one who had been dead for four days, wake up and come back to life? I’m sure they all RAN home (at top speed…I know I would if I saw someone come out of a tomb!) And I’m sure they told absolutely everyone they met about what Jesus had just done. People were so impressed by this miracle, that they all resolved that Jesus should be their king. They would meet Him as He entered the city for Passover! They began setting to work, organizing their friends to line the streets to meet Him, and collecting palm branches and olive branches to wave at Him.

We will go to Divine Liturgy and hear the Gospel account of the Entrance into Jeru-salem. We will be given blessed palms and willow branches to carry and wave dur-ing the Liturgy in celebration of the feast! We will march in procession with them in honor of those who marched along with Jesus through the streets of Jerusalem that day! Did you know that our ancestors in Eastern Europe lived in a climate that is much colder than it was in Jerusalem? There are no palm trees there, nor olive trees for that matter. At this time of the year, spring is only just starting to show any signs at all and the only living thing outdoors may be a pussy willow tree that is just starting to flower. This is why our people bless and carry willow branches, and not palms on Palm Sunday.

Here are some pussy-willows that you can eat. They are easy and fun to make. You can make up a

bunch for your family, or even double the recipe and make a whole basket of them to share!

Ingredients · A container of pretzel rods

· A large bag of chocolate chips, melt-ed and spooned into a tall jar

· A bag of mini marshmallows (White ones are best, but the multi-colored ones are a pretty alternative)

Preparation · Melt the chocolate and pour or

spoon it into a tall jar.

· Dip each pretzel rod into the choco-late, leaving the end for holding, and set it onto a baking tray that has been lined with parchment, or wax pa-per.

· Arrange the min-marshmallows by setting them in the chocolate to look like the catkins of a pussy-willow.

· Allow them to dry and set completely.

Tip Once they are completely dry, you can ar-range them in a nice basket to take to Divine Liturgy on Palm Sunday and share with your friends afterward!

Holidays/Feast Day

(continued on next page)

He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day He rose again in fulfilment of the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. (Symbol of Faith - Creed)

And when He had descended through the Cross into Hades, so that He might fill all things with Himself, He loosed the pangs of death. And rising on the third day and making a way for all flesh to the resurrection of the dead …He became the first fruit of those that sleep, the first-born of the dead, so that He might have pre-eminence in all things. And He ascended into heaven and took His seat at the right hand of Your majesty on high. (Anaphora of the Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great)

Our Catechism, “Catechism of the Ukrainian Catholic Church - Christ Our Pascha” (Lviv, 2011), teaches us that Jesus Christ is the New Passover, delivering us, His people, from sin:

The Pascha (Passover) of ChristThe word Pascha, derived from the Hebrew, Pesach, means to pass by, to pass through. The Pascha of Jesus Christ is his passing through suffering and death to his glorification in the Resurrection and Ascension. In the deepest sense, Christ himself is the Pascha (Passover) (see 1 Cor. 5:6-8), for the passage from death to life takes place in him: “Pascha, Pascha of the Lord, for from death to life, and from earth to heaven Christ God has led us.” Without him, all the efforts of the human race to free itself from slavery to sin and death would be in vain.

In the Old Testament, the celebration of Passover commemorated the liberation of God’s People from the slavery of Egypt. When Pharaoh refused to let the people go, an angel of death took the lives of the

Egyptian first-born. He passed by the Israelite homes, the door-posts of which by the directions of Moses had been anointed with the blood of a sacrificed lamb, so that no first-born Hebrew child would die (see Ex 12:12-13). In the celebration of Passover, the Jews also commemorated the passing through the Red Sea, when the Lord God saved the people of Israel from Pharaoh’s army (see Ex 14).

The Old Testament Passover was a prefiguration of Christ’s Passover (Pascha). It prepared the People of God for final liberation and salvation in the kingdom of God: Christ—the Lamb of God—by his Blood (see 1 Pt 1:19) leads the human race in an exodus from slavery to sin and the dominion of death, bringing us to resurrection and eternal life.

Christ, our Pascha, takes upon himself the sin of the world, suffering, and death: “What suffering did he accept for our sake? This was the suffering of love. Love is long-suffering.” The Passover of Christ is the manifestation of God’s

love: “Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end” ( Jn 13:1). The Lord willingly accepts his death: “I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it up again” ( Jn 10:17-18). Christ offers himself in sacrifice for us, “as the Priest and simultaneously as the Lamb of God, who takes the sin of the world.”176 Christ conquered death by his Resurrection, for God will not suffer his “holy one to see corruption” (Ps 15[16]:10). On account of the Resurrection, the death of Christ has become our passage to new life.

“The last enemy—death” (see 1 Cor 15:26), against which the human race was powerless, is now destroyed by the Pascha of Christ. “We do indeed die, but we do not continue in it; which is not to die at all. For the

THE ENTRY OF CHRIST INTO JERUSALEM

tyranny of death, and death indeed, is when he who dies is nevermore allowed to return to life. But when after dying is living, and that a better life, this is not death, but sleep.” The Resurrection of Christ is a unique and unrepeatable historical event and the foundation of Christian

faith: “If Christ has not been raised ... your faith has been in vain” (1 Cor. 15:14). Faith in the Risen Christ is the beginning of our Pascha. Every year Christians prepare for the celebration of holy Pascha during the time of the Great Fast (Lent).

The Pascha (Passover) of Christ

The Fast lasts forty days as an image of the forty-year journey of the People of God into the Promised Land and the forty-day fast of Christ in the wilderness. By training the Christian to abstain from sin, the Fast leads to interior freedom and true joy. Throughout the Fast, the Church

The entry of Christ into Jerusalem is a celebration of triumph. This is the way the Gospel presents the event. Our Church brings us to this moment of glory. Coming at the close of Great Lent, the celebration of the Feast gives a foretaste of Paschal Joy.

According to the Gospel of St. John (12: 1-18) the public celebration which accompanied the Entry into Jerusalem was not only on account of Jesus, but also to see Lazarus whom He had raised from the dead. The people took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him. Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it. The Disciples followed Him and the welcoming crowd met them at the Jerusalem Gate. In the icon, our

focus of attention is on the portrait of Christ, seated sideways on the donkey, His head turned toward the Disciples following Him, and His right hand raised in blessing.

Traditionally, children play a prominent role in the representation of the Entry Into Jerusalem. Some are depicted: one, high in a tree, cutting the palm branches; another, spreading his cloak along Christ's way. Though the Gospels do not specify the children's presence, the Church sees in them the very embodiment of the Biblical reference: "Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings you have fashioned praise." (Psalm 8: 3) Related to this is the call of the Palm Sunday Vespers: "Wherefore,

like babes, rejoice, carrying branches in your hands, and praise Him, singing, 'Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He Who comes, the King of Israel.' "

The Icon of the Entry portrays the journey of Christ to His voluntary passion and death. At the same time, it gives us an image of His installation

His Beatitude Sviatoslav: «Sin paralyzes a person and prevents one from being oneself»

Tuesday, 26 March 2019

Sin does not allow us to function fully. Therefore, it is so important for us to receive God's mercy. The Father and Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, during the sermon to the faithful on the second Sunday of the Lent in the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, asks to deliberate over this.

On the second Sunday of the Great Fast, the Word of God tells us about Jesus Christ who comes to man and proclaims the Word of the Gospel in a private home ... The Gospel emphasizes the desperate act of several people who begin to disassemble the roof and put down to the teacher a relaxed man ...

The preacher remarked that in the modern world people sometimes lose understanding. "We often think that sin is something like psychological distress. And we are looking for different ways to calm ourselves. A person often looks for something that would help her simply not to see the evil," said the Bishop.

Even more, continued His Beatitude Sviatoslav, the modern man thinks that the cause of such negativism, such anxiety are God's commandments, and therefore tries to ignore them. He does this in order to seem to be free from everything that can create psychological or psychological discomfort for him.

The spiritual leader emphasized the

importance of forgiveness in the life of man. The word "forgiveness" turns into a miracle of healing. "Forgive - means to eliminate all that makes a person broken," says the Primate.

Today's event, emphasizes the preacher, tells us the truth. "For sin is a paralysis of a person. This relaxed man has all the members of his body healthy, but he is weak, because he lacks the inner strength that would tie his whole being into a single, complete body. That's what sin does. He paralyzes us. It does not allow us to fully operate. Therefore, it is so important for us to receive God's mercy," emphasizes the spiritual leader.

"When God gives me forgiveness, He heals me. His forgiveness

means: "Arise and walk." In today's God's Word, we see that God's forgiveness signifies a new creation of man.

But the Gospel also says, the Primate added, that a relaxed sinner can not come to Christ alone. He needs a community of believers who, by the power of their faith, would bring him to the Savior. We are with you today in the temple, because someone once brought us to God. Department of Information of the UGCC

Eight years ago, the new Head of the UGCC, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, was enthroned. How it was...

Friday, 29 March 2019 Eight years ago, on March 27, 2011, elected by the Electoral Synod of Bishops of the UGCC and confirmed by the Holy Father, the new Head of the UGCC, the Major Archbishop of Kyiv -Halych, His Beatitude Sviatoslav came to the throne.

The feast began with the Procession of the Cross. It passed from the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin to the main Church of the Greek Catholics: the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ. More than 350 priests, 60 bishops of the UGCC and other Eastern Catholic Churches, representatives of the Apostolic See, the European Bishops' Conference, the hierarchs of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine took part in the procession.

The rite of enthronement of the Head of the UGCC began with the proclamation by the secretary of the UGCC Synod of Bishops Bishop Bohdan Dziurakh of the decision of the Synod to elect Vladyka Sviatoslav as the Head of the

UGCC. Consequently, the newly elected Head of the Church ascended the Amvon, where, during the acclamation "Axios!" he received the insignia of the Head of the Church. An omoforion to the Primate of the Church was presented by Metropolitan of Peremyshl-Warsaw Ivan (Martyniak), a panagia and an encolpion were presented by Metropolitan of Philadelphia Stefan (Soroka), and Metropolitan of Winnipeg, Lawrence (Huculak), presented a miter. Patriarchal rod, a symbol of acceptance of the new authority and new powers, was presented to the new Head of the Church by Archbishop of Lviv Ihor (Voznyak), who until the enthronement, had acted as the UGCC Administrator.

The rite of sitting on the throne, a central liturgical moment of the enthronement according to the Byzantine tradition, was performed by Metropolitan of Peremyshl-Warsaw Ivan (Martyniak), Metropolitan of Philadelphia Stefan (Soroka), Metropolitan of Winnipeg Lawrence

(Huculak), Apostolic Exarch for the Ukrainians in France, Benelux and Switzerland, Bishop Mykhailo (Hrynchyshyn), Eparch of Sambir-Drohobych Bishop Julian (Voronovskyj), and Bishop-emeritus of Stamford Eparchy Most Rev. Basil (Losten).

After this, the newly-appointed Father and Head of the UGCC, the Major Archbishop of Kyiv-Halych, delivered his enthronement sermon. "Today we, the heirs of Volodymyr's baptism, experience unity and continuity with our history and tradition. We take ownership of the precious heritage of our great predecessors: the Servant of God Metropolitan Andrey (Sheptytsky), Patriarchs Josyf, Myroslav Ivan

and Lubomyr. Today these men, with the warm hand of Lubomyr, bless us and make this treasure alive, significant and enlightening for a modern Ukrainian. 'Holiness of the united people of God' – this is, and this will be, the development strategy of our Church," said His Beatitude Sviatoslav in the final part of his first patriarch's word.

In Germany, His Beatitude Sviatoslav spoke at a meeting of the Church in Need

Thursday, 04 April 2019

Father and Head of the UGCC, His Beatitude Sviatoslav arrived in Germany on a working visit and participates in the meetings of the Church in Need, a charity organization, which was founded in 1947. The Primate is accompanied by Fr. Andrij Maxymovich, administrator of the Patriarchal Curia and Fr.. Lubomyr Yavorsky, patriarchal econom.

In his words, the Head of the Church thanked everyone for the opportunity to speak at this event. He also noted that the UGCC had a difficult path in its development: "The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church was an opposition to the

communist regime in the USSR. Only 30 years ago our Church was revived, received a complete dismissal. It is a global Church because it operates not only in Ukraine and for Ukrainians, but for all around the world."

In addition, His Beatitude Sviatoslav (as an example) mentioned the visit of the Bishop Yosyf Milyan and fr. Andrij Gakh to South Africa, where they first served the Liturgy. In this way, according to the Primate, the UGCC learns different cultures, languages and countries.

The Greek Catholic leader, in his speech to the audience, listed the important issues, challenges and problems that Ukrainians are now facing: the war in

the east (in particular, environmental problems, since Donbas suffers from water pollution and mined areas), annexation of the Crimea, populism, etc.

"We were not a rich country before the war. However, imagine what is happening to the country's economy now, during the war! "- calls on the Head of the Church. According to him, not only the war and economic problems force many young and educated people to emigrate to Western Europe, but also social unrest and political instability.

His Beatitude Sviatoslav spoke about the presidential election in Ukraine…

"We need freedom, Christian morals, which are the fundamental values that will build a modern and successful country," the Head of the UGCC said, adding that Ukrainians also need to have spiritual and moral authorities.

In the end he mentioned the great contribution of the volunteer movement, in particular Caritas Ukraine, as well as the ecumenical situation in Ukraine.

Pope at Audience: In “Our Father” we pray for needs of all27 March 2019

Pope Francis continued his catechesis on the Our Father during his weekly General Audience. In Wednesday’s reflection, the Pope focused on the petition: “Give us this day our daily bread”.

By Christopher Wells

During the General Audience on Wednesday, Pope Francis began a series of reflections on the second part of the “Our Father”, where, he said, we present our needs to God.

Prayer begins with concrete needsThe first of these

petitions, “Give us this day our daily bread”, reminds us that we are not self-sufficient. Prayer, the Pope said, begins with our daily concerns, our most pressing, concrete necessities of life. Pope Francis invited us to consider this prayer from the point of view of those who are in

real need: “How many mothers, and how many fathers, even today, go to sleep with the anguish of not having sufficient bread for their children for the next day?” he asked. Seen from this perspective, “the words

Here, he said, “our daily bread” means not just food, but also all the necessities of life, such as water, medicine, a home, a job. Moreover, he continued, in the “Our Father” we are reminded that we must pray not just for our own needs, but for the needs of everyone. “If it is not prayed in this way”, the Pope said,

“the ‘Our Father’ ceases to be a Christian prayer”.

"Our Father" includes an attitude of solidarityWith the request for “our daily bread”, rather than my daily bread, the “Our Father” includes in itself an “attitude of empathy, an attitude of solidarity”, Pope Francis said. In this way, Jesus teaches us to present the needs of everyone to the Father.

of the five thousand, from the Gospel of St Matthew. The multiplication of the loaves and fishes was a true miracle, the Pope said; but the greater miracle was the sharing. The young boy who shared his bread and fish “had understood the lesson of the ‘Our Father’, Pope Francis explained: “That food is not private property… but providence to be shared, with the grace of God”.

Only the Eucharist can satisfy hunger for the infiniteIn this miracle, the Pope

said in conclusion, Jesus anticipated the offering of Himself in the Holy Eucharist: “Only the Eucharist”, he said, “is able to satisfy the hunger for the infinite and the desire for God that animates every human person, even in the search for daily bread”.
