CAMPUS NEWS:

Mosaic Diversity Scholarship Fundraiser. The Campus held the annual Mosaic Diversity Scholarship Fundraiser on Wednesday, April 17. At that event Camilo Pardo and Jeremy (Teekz) Yenpasook were presented as recipients of the Inclusion, Diversity and Equity Advancement (IDEA) Scholarship.

These two recipients fully embody TUCOM’s vision “to prepare outstanding osteopathic physicians for the future needs of their patients and communities” to create a culture and environment that is fully inclusive representing a diverse group of students, staff, faculty and leaders.IPE. The Annual Campus IPE event took place on April 24 during which the movie “To Err is Human” was shown followed by an interprofessional panel discussion.

Research Day. Dr. Gochin and Dr. Elul spearheaded the annual campus Research Day event in April which was a very well attended and showcased 68 student research posters.

COM NEWS:For the 10th consecutive year the COM was noted by US News and World Report as one of the top 10-15 medical schools nationally in having its graduates pursue a primary care residency.

GROUPIE: The GROUPIE program is an acronym for seven areas of investigation that are ongoing at Touro California: Global Health, Research, Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, Obesity, Ultrasound, Public Health, Inter-professionalism and Empathy. The COM published the second installment about GROUPIE in a series of six new JAOA articles in the November 2018 Volume 118 Issue.

Accreditation: The American Osteopathic Association’s Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) reviewed and accepted Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine-CA’s (TUCOM) Mid-Cycle Report and determined that all standards and elements were met as required.

COM CME: The COM CME under the leadership of Sarah Passage received 5-Year Accreditation with Commendation from COMCE and are one of 8 providers nationally who received 6 Year Accreditation with Commendation under the new criteria for ACCME.

Diabetes Prevention: The DREAM team under the leadership of Jay Shubrook, DO partnered with Solano County Public Health on earning CDC Full Recognition for the Diabetes Prevention Program. This designation is reserved for programs that have effectively delivered a quality evidence-based program that meets all the standards for CDC recognition.

Innovation in Medical Education Award: In its first two years, Clinical Distinction received national recognition twice:

2017 ] AACOM’s Society of Osteopathic Medical Educators (SOME) conferred its annual Innovation in Medical Education Award in recognition of specific education innovations that have resulted in meaningful change at the developers’ institutions to Jennifer Weiss, DO, Associate Professor, for her innovation: Clinical Distinction: Advancing EPAs through a Required Year 3 Course.

OPSC Distinguished Service Award: Congratulations to Howard Feinberg, DO who was awarded the 2019 OPSC Distinguished Service Award.

Dr. Howard Feinberg’s efforts in establishing St. Joseph Hospital in Stockton has resulted in increased student rotation opportunities, establishment of residencies in family medicine and emergency medicine with more residencies to come and several grants to support this affiliation.

Congratulations to Dr. Howard Feinberg and Dr. Richard Riemer on this exciting and growing program.

Other COM News:• The COM was honored to have Ms. Pamela Murphy,

Senior Vice President of Governmental Relations, from the AACOM, visit our campus and speak with our students in March of 2019.

• Dr. Clearfield represented not only TUC but also the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners at the US Osteopathic Medical Regulatory Summit in February.

• Dr. Gail Feinberg, Dr. Stacey Pierce-Talsma, and Dr. Tami Hendriksz all represented TUC at the Women in Medicine Summit at the AACOM Conference in April, 2019.

IN MEMORY OF DR. BERNARD ZELIGER

On a sad note, the founding Dean and Provost, Dr. Bernard Zeliger passed away on December 15, 2018. Dr. Zeliger will be remembered by students and faculty alike. TUCOM honored Dr. Zeliger for his stewardship of TUCOM when he was granted the degree of Doctor of Human Letter Honoris Causa on June 8, 2003. On September 17, 2017 Dr. Zeliger was again honored as one of the five original founders of our campus during our 20th Anniversary Gala celebration. His portrait is enshrined with the other founders in the

COM academic building H83. The passing of Dr. Zeliger will leave a large void on our campus, as well as in the lives of all those who had the honor and privilege of knowing him.

Gold Foundation: Katherine Ku, Class of 2021 was also awarded the prestigious Summer Service Fellowship by the Gold Foundation. This very selective fellowship is a first for our institution, as only eight recipients were awarded this nationally. Student Doctor Ku’s project is “Participatory photography and storytelling as a way to explore community health and social action with reentry population of Solano County.”

OPSC: Four graduating students, Sarah Azam, Darcy Wilson, Naveetha Nandakumar and Lindsay Nausin, received the AWMA (American Women’s Medical Association) Glascow-Rubin Citation for Academic Achievement for being women in the top 10% of their graduating class.

Integrative Medicine Club Symposium: The Integrative Medicine Club held a very successful first Integrative Medicine Symposium on Sunday, January 6, 2019.

Nutrition Club: The Nutrition Club hosted a first ever Touro COOKS (Clinically Oriented Osteopathic Kitchen Studies) event on March 20th in the gym. Over 40 students, from COM, COP and the MPH programs joined together to prepare meals and learn about the micronutrient content of meals, and to harvest and plant microgreens

ALUMNI NEWS:American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM): Two TUCOM alumni received first and second place awards at the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) annual meeting resident Research Poster competition:

◆ Roland Haj, DO, Class of 2015, received first place for his poster on “Ultrasound First the Correct Approach for Pediatric Appendicitis a Community Hospital?” from Flushing Hospital Medical Center.

◆ James Wilson, DO, Class of 2011 and US Naval Reserve, received second Place for his poster on “Smallpox Vaccination in the Setting of Autoimmune Disease:” Franciscan Health Olympia Fields, Internal Medicine.

Second Generation TUCOM Graduate: Steven Joye, DO, Class of 2005 and Emergency Physician in Sonora is now joined by our new alumnus Ashlin Joye, DO, Class 2019 who matched in Ophthalmology at Oregon Health Sciences University as our first second generation TUCOM graduate.

Inspirational: Daniel Gilbert, DO Class of 2006, Urologist, was featured when he donated surgery to help an uninsured Napa man so he may live without pain. What an inspirational story!

DEPARTMENT UPDATES:Basic Sciences Department UpdatesTamira Elul, PhD: presented “Novel molecular mechanisms of neuronal circuit development” at the meeting of the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology in Tampa, Florida in Jan 2019.

Eiman Mahmoud, MD was selected to be part of the Global Health Education Committee and a member of the International Working Group for Health Profession Education and Health System Strengthening in Africa.

Mark Teaford, PhD was elected a Fellow of the American Association of Anatomists.

Andrea Taylor, PhD was selected as a Fellow for the American Association for Advancement of Science.

Dr. Taylor was elected as an AAAS Fellow for her transformational contributions to our understanding of primate functional morphology and feeding mechanics and for advancing the status and careers of women in biological anthropology.

In November, 2018, Dr. Taylor participated in a Grantee Engagement Workshop in Healdsburg, CA, sponsored by the LSB Leakey Foundation, with the goal of developing best practices to support grantees in the field.

In March, 2019, Dr. Taylor facilitated a four-hour mentor-training workshop to biological anthropologists entitled “Mentoring the Mentor”, which was held in Cleveland, Ohio.

Dr. Taylor served as Program Chair for the session entitled “Primate Craniodental Functional Morphology” at the annual meeting of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists, Cleveland, Ohio on March 27, 2019.

Clinical Education Department UpdatesCallbacks: This Spring the CED held a successful 3rd Year Callback session for our Class of 2020 students, helping to prepare them as they transition to their 4th year of medical school.

Orientation to Clinical Clerkships: CED organized a successful Orientation to Clinical Clerkships for our Class of 2021 students helping that class get ready for their transition from the preclinical to the clinical years.

Tami Hendriksz, DO, was selected by TUC alumni for the inaugural “Inspiring Faculty Award” . Thank you Dr. Hendriksz for continuing to being an inspiration to all of us.

Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Department UpdatesStacey Pierce-Talsma was appointed as Vice Chair for the Review Committee for Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), a national organization that accredits over 11,200 residency and fellowship programs for over 135,000 resident physicians. This appointment recognized Dr. Pierce-Talsma’s prominence in the field and her contributions to the health of the profession and the public.

Dr Pierce-Talsma was also elected to the Board of Directors of the OPSC.

Nicole Peña, DO completed the ACUE course bringing new course ideas and best teaching practices to the department.

Dr. Victor Nuño: Starting on June 10, 2019-Dr. Victor Nuño will be the course director and founder of Touro’s first required fourth year OMM Rotation. This OMM

rotation will include a rotation with faculty at the Solano county clinic, seeing volunteers in the building H89 OMT lab, and assisting with teaching in the OMM and Anatomy Labs.

OMM Department Staffing Changes:The OMM Department welcomed Ms. Shawna Simms as the OMM Department Administrative Coordinator.

The Department congratulated two long term department members: R. Mitchell Hiserote, DO (former Department Chair 2014-2016) and Lee Ann Cuny, DO as they embarked on the next phase of their careers.

The Department also honored John Glover, DO, FAAO (Former

Department Chair 2004-2014) who is scheduled to retire, July 1, 2019. In recognition of service to the OMM department and to the COM, the OMM Lab will now be designated as the John Glover, DO Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Lab.

Pre-Clinical Education Department UpdatesEduardo Velasco MD, MSc PhD served as Panelist for NBOME’s Preconference Workshop at the 2019 AACOM Educating Leaders Conference.

Dr. Velasco also serves on the AACOM Diversity Council as a member and participated at the AACOM Council on Diversity and Equity Meeting.

At the ACCOM Annual Conference Dr. Velasco presented; “Two-Year Follow Up Assessment of the WARM Program“ on Thursday, April 11, 2019 at the Educating Leaders 2019 event.

Primary Care Department UpdatesAlesia Wagner: Dr. Alesia Wagner, DO was awarded the OPSC Physician of the Year. She was nominated by our students for her commitment to her students and her ongo-ing mentoring efforts.

Dr. Wagner was also recognized for her many commitments to NBOME which include COMLEX level 2CE item writer, Clinical Decision Making Subcommittee Case Rater/Reviewer/Validator

Gail Feinberg, DO received Master Preceptor Award from ACOFP.

Dr. Gail Feinberg also serves as one of three Editors for California DO.

Kim Pfotenhauer, DO: TUC and the Primary Care Department are sad to bid farewell to Dr. Pfotenhauer who after five years at TUC is moving back to Michigan to be near family.

Catherine West MD, DrPH completed the ACUE course bringing new course ideas and best teaching practices to the department.

Christina Kinnevey, MD: The Primary Care Department also welcomed Christina Kinnevey, MD, who comes to us with a strong commitment to serve

the underserved. She is a graduate of UC Davis School of Medicine, Sutter Health Family Medicine Residency Program in Sacramento and a Fellowship in Community Medicine and Global Health at Kaiser Napa-Solano. Dr Kinnevey provides extensive leadership experiences in community medicine and global health.

Global Health NewsThe Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) annual conference Poster Competition was held in Chicago, IL (March 8-10, 2019).

◆ Joshua Lee (Class of 2021) presented the poster the “Implication of HbA1c Monitoring in Preventing ESRD Progression – A Short Term Analysis”. The poster which Joshua Lee (Class of 2021), Y.C. Chen, Athena Lin worked on was selected as one of the two finalists for the Lancet Student Poster Competition and won second place.

◆ The CUGH poster “Identifying Contributing factors for pediatric HIV loss to follow-ups in a rural Tanzanian Population” was presented by Kavitha Gilroy (Class of 2021), Mikaela Rico (Class of 2021), and Eiman Mahmoud, MD.

◆ Kavitha Gilroy, OMS2 and Mikaela Rico, OMS2 also presented a poster at the American Academy of Osteopathy Convocation.

◆ David Weiss (OMS 4) presented a poster at the Unite for Sight Innovation Conference at Yale in April 2019.

Master of Sciences in Medical Health SciencesPoster Day: The MSMHS program celebrated a successful poster day on Friday May 17, 2019 with 40 posters presented by 58 students.

Research NewsSalima Mostafa is our new research coordinator. She comes to CA from New Jersey to help the MRC and the clinical research effort.

Jean-Marc Schwarz, PhD’s grant entitled “Fructose: Substrate, Stimulus, or Both? Was funded for $2.8 million over four years by NIDDK (1R01DK116033-01A1). TUCOM co-investigators in this project are Kathleen Mulligan, PhD, Jay Shubrook, DO and Eduardo Velasco, MD, PhD with the support of Sally Chiu, PhD, as coordinator. The results of this study could inform efforts to develop evidence-based interventions and dietary guidance

to mitigate CVD risk and is great validation of the TUC MRC as a center for cutting-edge research in metabolic disease. (1R01DK116033-01A1). TUCOM co-investigators in this project are Kathleen Mulligan, PhD, Jay Shubrook, DO and Eduardo Velasco, MD, PhD with the support of Sally Chiu, PhD, as coordinator. The results of this study could inform efforts to develop evidence-based interventions and dietary guidance to mitigate CVD risk and is great validation of the TUC MRC as a center for cutting-edge research in metabolic disease.

Ignacio Peralta, got his PhD in Pharmacology in February 2019 from the University of Buenos Aires, co-directed by Dr. Gugliucci. In cooperation with the School of Pharmacy of the University of Buenos Aires, part of the work was conducted at TUCOM, funded by a Fulbright fellowship.

Agustina Irazusta, co-directed by Dr. Gugliucci got her Master in Chemistry from the School of Chemistry, University of Uruguay in March 2019. Funded by the Agency for Research and Innovation, Uruguay.
