On March 19, Michelle Kefford, principal at
Charles W. Flanagan High School, in Pembroke
Pines, was recognized as the 2019 Florida
Principal of the Year by the Florida Department
of Education. Kefford, a proud graduate of the
Florida education system, bested over 4,000 of
her colleagues for Florida’s top educational
leadership honor.
Kefford has been an educator for more than 19
years and has been the principal at Flanagan
High School since 2011. Prior to arriving at
Flanagan, Kefford taught Biology for six years at
Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, and
served as an Assistant Principal at Western High School and Boyd Anderson High School.
Ever since her first day at Flanagan, Kefford has been driven
to create and foster an environment of student and faculty
success. Under her guidance, Flanagan High School earned
its first ever “A” and has received an “A” in six out of her seven
years at the helm. “I am proud to say that everything we have
accomplished here has been as a team,” stated Kefford.
“We have been able to consistently lead our students to
exceptional achievement, as demonstrated by our high learning
gains, proficiency rates, acceleration rates, and graduation rates.”
Kefford has initiated several programs, including “Kefford’s Kids,” which provides peer to peer
mentorship, and “Falcon Flyers,” an initiative to enable middle school students to earn high school
credits while attending school at
Flanagan. These programs reflect Kefford’s
focus on personalized student education.
According to Kefford, “Students will learn
and work hard if they know they are cared
for and valued. I have initiated multiple
mentoring programs that stress and
reinforce the importance of relationships
throughout our school community.
This is what makes the student
education at Flanagan different.”

The educational environment at Flanagan is further elevated by Kefford’s
philosophy of servant leadership and her dedication to empowering
instructional leaders. Kefford consistently challenges her staff to create
unique, engaging, and effective programs that influence and impact their
students beyond the walls of their classrooms. In the ever-changing
landscape of education, she continues to strive for innovation and
welcomes input from students, faculty, and the community.
As a passionate educator, Kefford holds various positions on district, city,
and county committees and works tirelessly to develop the future of
Florida’s education system within the district’s leadership programs. To
her peers, it came as no
surprise that Kefford
received this prestigious
award. There was no
doubt this day would
come, it was just a
matter of when.

Research shows that family engagement in their
child’s education improves student achievement,
reduces absenteeism, improves the child’s social
skills, behavior and performance on tests. Many
parents allow students to take control of their
education when they reach high school, but the
parents’ role during high school is more important
than ever. Flanagan encourages all parents to get
involved in their child’s high school education!
Stay Engaged!

While Master Chief Peterson is Not BRAND New to Flanagan, We Wanted to Feature
this Amazing Addition as He Joins the Leadership Ranks of the NJROTC Program:
What brought you to Flanagan High School?
After I retired from the Navy on July 1, 2017, I
already knew what I wanted to do in life which was
to continue giving back to today's society through
our youth; hoping to change someone's life like
mine was changed after struggling my first two
years in the military.
What is the JROTC program and what is your vision
for the future of the program?
Just to mention a few, the NJROTC program
covers military customs and courtesies, flag
etiquette, instruction in marching for parades and
ceremonies, rifle drills, study habits, time
management, first aid, communication skills,
personnel counseling, fundamentals of financial
planning, and personal and stress management.
One important thing to note is that enrollment in
NJROTC does not require you to pursue a military
obligation and is not tied to an accession or
recruiting programs. My vision for the future is to
provide all NJROTC Cadets tools for success after
high school regardless of their desired career
paths.
How did Flanagan become such a strong national
force for JROTC?
Flanagan Cadets display such a strong national
force because they are provided the tools
necessary to achieve the life long goals. The
program has help Cadets achieve their goals and
plays a major factor in the achieving higher grades,
SAT & ACT scores, community involvement, etc.
What do you love most about leading the JROTC
program at Flanagan High School?
I truly believe that this program provides cadets
with experiences that give them a competitive edge
over the rest of the student population in preparing
for their post secondary options. What I love most
about this program is that leadership is emphasized
each year, and the coursework prepares cadets for
positions in any military or civilian career.

Mrs. Ward, Flanagan’s Literacy Coach, is happy to announce that the Makerspace area in the
Media Center is up and running for student and teacher use!!
Wikipedia defines a library makerspace as, "an area and/or service that offers library patrons an
opportunity to create intellectual and physical materials using resources such as computers, 3-D
printers, audio and video capture and editing tools, and traditional arts and crafts supplies." We are
starting with the traditional arts and craft supplies but we have hopes to add and build as the year
progresses.
We have puzzles students may assemble during lunch or Study Hall. Students may also
come during lunch or from Study Hall with a signed pass from their teacher to play Chess,
Scrabble and Boggle. Each month we will have a different theme. In past months, we’ve focused
on Gratitude and Coding. If you have ideas for The MakerSpace or have craft items you would like
to donate, please send them to the Media Center. Thank you for your support😊

FLANAGAN’S GENIUS BAR
Flanagan’s peer tutoring program called the
Genius Bar pairs Math “Geniuses” with
“Geniuses in Training”. Students meet with
their partner during their study hall period and
work on Algebra 1 and Geometry content to
support student achievement. The symbiotic
relationship allows Geniuses the opportunity
to mentor their peers while developing
academic communication skills and the
Geniuses in Training receive individualized
help during school hours. We are proud of
both our Geniuses and our Geniuses in
Training for the effort they put into each of
their tutoring sessions. If you have any
questions about the program, you can
contact Ms. Koltunova at
DEMOCRACY IN ACTION
Charles W. Flanagan High School students once again participated in this year's Democracy in
Action Initiative, a District civic education program sponsored by Florida Representative Richard
Stark. Juniors Astara Bastille, Altone Cooper-Macintosh, Jovanni Gomez and Thomas Escudero
presented the Florida Sweet Green Act, a bill proposal that promoted bio-remediation and stronger
water standards to slow down and treat toxin contamination in the Everglades Area Basin.
Representative Stark found the proposal "very interesting" and was impressed with the idea of bio-
remediation as a natural way to treat the algae bloom problem. Congratulations to those students
and their AP U.S. History teacher Dr. Matias Arellano for
representing the best of Flanagan High School!

Black History Month at Flanagan, Elevated Through MOVE
(Moving Obstacles Victoriously through Empowerment)
Moving Obstacles Victoriously through Empowerment (MOVE) is not only the name of a
Flanagan High School student organization but a title that epitomizes what this unique group of
students in the school is tasked with. Black History Month was a strong focus for students in the
MOVE program. During Black History Month, students mobilized themselves to portray the
African-American culture in a variety of ways to the entire student body. Teacher, Ms. Juliet Hue
and her students Mijah Allen, Denaria Humes, Adia Webb, and Vanya McNair took the initiative
to decorate the media center hallway with novels, pictures, fabrics, and artifacts that depicted
prominent staples of the African-American culture. Additionally, every day during the morning
announcements, the school population heard a motivational quote from a prominent African-
American leader, researched and submitted by Fitzgerald Davis.
The grand finale to black history month was a talent show organized by MOVE teacher, Ms.
Annmarie Chambers, in conjunction with her students, Tobi Salau, Mya Lazenby and other
mentor leaders in the MOVE organization. This culminating event was titled Shades of Black,
Uniting the World, and showcased talents from a variety of student groups and individuals within
our school. Performances included songs, Latin dances, raps, poetry, and a concert from the
school’s band, Falcon Sound. Student attendance was optional, and attendees were asked to
make donations to the Ronald McDonald house in the form of unused children’s books. The
effort of Flanagan’s groundbreaking student group, MOVE, united Flanagan High School in
culture throughout Black History Month and beyond.
MOVE is actively recruiting students
to join its program for next year.

WRITER’s I INK
Writers Ink - the name chosen by Flanagan High School's poetry club - represents how poets "bleed"
ink from their souls. At our weekly meetings, we share our pieces aloud and then give one another
specific feedback on things we liked, related to, or deeply felt. It’s an open space where students are
able to express themselves through writing without the fear of being judged or criticized. We
welcome everyone who walks in as if he or she is family - because that's what we are. Twice a year,
we put on a Poetry Jam at our school. All the students are allowed to audition, even those who are
not members of poetry club. We normally get many new members after our first poetry jam because
that's when students realize what we do and fall in love with our culture - this event is a great way to
find new and excited writers!
We also participate in Louder Than a Bomb, a spoken word poetry slam competition sponsored by
the Jason Taylor Foundation. All of the poetry clubs from Florida's schools that participate are
fighting to win a trip to Chicago, where the LTAB movement all started. Mrs. Kristy Modia, our club
sponsor, chooses our team of 8-10 poets based on performances at our poetry jam. In last year's
competition, we placed third in the state; it was a journey none of us will ever forget.
The reason we write is to exercise our voice, our thoughts. We know no
other way to express ourselves; we are POETS. Our club provides an
outlet to express how we feel, where we can speak freely and not be
silenced. Once you step onto the stage, whether it be at a competition or
in Mrs. Modia's room, there isn't anyone cutting you off in the middle of a
sentence. We write to be heard; spoken word is a lifestyle.
Every school needs a Mrs. Modia. I say this only because I want you to imagine the hundreds of
young lives she has touched by encouraging the love for creative writing. Perhaps one day, you will
see us performing at an open mic event and recognize us as leaders of the spoken art movement.
Until then, Valerie DeLeon (President of Writer's Ink Poetry Club)

The breathtaking performances by the Flanagan Color
Guard may leave you in need of medical attention from
Flanagan’s exemplary HOSA (Health Occupations
Student Organization) chapter! Nationally recognized
and ranked as “Outstanding”, the HOSA students of
Flanagan are emboldened by the mission to empower
future health professionals to become leaders in the
global health community through education,
collaboration, and experience. Flanagan’s HOSA
chapter is one of the most active academic
organizations in the school, grounded in its commitment
to learning, leadership, service, and innovation. Each
year, the HOSA chapter at Flanagan engages in
countless service projects, fundraisers, school and community awareness activities, volunteer
efforts, blood drives and clinical rotations at Memorial Hospital West to provide extensive
occupational experiences to its chapter members, raise community awareness for widespread
health issues and to give back to the Pembroke Pines community.
This winter, HOSA held one of the biggest blood drives in Flanagan history, collecting 203 pints of
blood, which will be used to save 609 lives. As the HOSA chapter continues to grow, so does its
sphere of influence on important community health issues. Each year, the HOSA chapter holds a
health fair to bring awareness to a variety of global health issues. At this year’s HOSA health fair,
the HOSA students created stations and displays that tackled different
aspects of health, such as: eating disorders, drug abuse, HIV/AIDS, type II
diabetes, influenzas, obesity, depression, handwashing, breast and skin
cancer. Over 300 students attended the health fair. Students were able to
interact with displays, ask questions of HOSA students and explore health
topics that they may not have been familiar with otherwise.
In the month of May, the HOSA chapter will continue their service to the
community by holding a school supplies drive for the “His House Children’s
Home” charity organization which works to restore the lives of children and
families who are victims of abuse, abandonment, and neglect. The HOSA
students will be collecting school supplies throughout the month of May to
donate to the charity. All donations are welcome.
Any students that are interested in
joining this prestigious HOSA
chapter are welcome to apply.

PINCH POTS//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Creative Pinch Pots with Mr. WalshA pinch pot is a simple form of hand-made pottery produced from ancient times to the present
day. A pinching method is used to create pottery that can be ornamental or functional. This
technique has been widely used across cultures throughout history. Students in Mr. Walsh’s
Ceramics I classes learned the “pinch pot technique” and then used it to create their own
personal works of art.
