From Virginia…

I hope everyone has been doing well through the recent snow storms. At least

working in miniatures is great therapy for cabin fever. Peninsula Heritage

Miniature Society had a Christmas party and dinner, but we ended up

cancelling our January meeting due to snow. It does not take much snow to

shut down Tidewater. We are working on an idea to display and do a

workshop at an event that is a bit out of the box for miniatures, perhaps even “out of this world.”

More details will follow as they materialize.

Jeff Wilson

President, PHMS hmmm… Wonder what he is up to! (TT editor)

… And Maryland

Well, here it is. Save the Date!

The big news going around the region is that there WILL be a MARYLAND

STATE DAY this year. It will be held on Saturday, May 26, at the Church of the Ascension in

Westminster, Maryland, from 8 AM to 3 PM, and the project is a 1/2" scale one-room log cabin, to be

finished however you like - pioneer, depression, summer get-away. . . So, start gathering furnishings and

decorations from your stash of goodies so you can outfit your cabin to your heart's desire. There will be

exhibits, souvenirs, a silent auction, and tray sales. I hope you will find plenty of items in your

collections to bring and sell to others, as well as find treasures to buy and add back into your stashes! A

box lunch will be provided (more about that on the Registration Form). I hope you plan to attend. It

looks like it will be lots of fun!

On a different topic, as a region, we need to consider how to get young people interested and involved in

miniatures. I have presented children's workshops at Molly's shows in both Maryland and Virginia in past

years, and they have been well received by the children attending the show with a parent or grandparent.

However there is no follow up provided to keep the enthusiasm alive. I have no knowledge of how many

little girls or boys have a dolls house or barn in these somewhat anti-social days of cell phones and

computers. It just could be that involving your children, or grand, or even great-grandchildren in special

miniature projects that interest them might be a means of getting young people interested in miniatures.

Topics like Harry Potter, Frozen, Paddington Bear or any of the Disney characters, or sports are

popular and easy to find figures and other items to stuff a cupboard, make a sorcerer's table, or other free-

standing scenes that interest the children. They are not huge, time-consuming undertakings that could

lead to a large price tag or are so involved that the child becomes bored. Everything starts from one small

seed, grows and blooms into a beautiful creation. It is up to us plant that seed. If we don't, we will be

contributing to the demise of our cherished hobby.

I hope everyone is keeping warm and healthy in this crazy weather and working on minis!

Until next time,

Nancy

We would like to invite you to join us for a Maryland State Day. The project is a one-room “Log Cabin”

You can use your imagination to make this versatile 1/2-inch scale structure anything you would like it to

be. Be creative and design your cabin to fulfill your dreams!

Your Registration Fee of $75.00 includes lunch and the workshop. Lunch is a sandwich with fruit, chips,

dessert and beverage.

As a participant you are invited to take part in tray sales. A tray sale is as many items as you can get on to

a lunch tray that you might like to sell. There will also be a Silent Auction with many treasures.

For further information about attending the workshop contact Nancy Chalmers at (443-799-0155) or

[email protected]

Committee members will showcase their prototypes at the Yard Sale on May 12, 2018, the First State

Mini Show (Delaware Show), the Lancaster Show and at club meetings.

In Memory of

Betty Mathers,

founding member

of Maryland

Miniatures

Unlimited (MMU).

September 9, 1926

- December 3,

2017.

Betty Mathers had

been working with miniatures for over 40 years.

Ever since she walked into a model railroading

shop with her husband in 1972, she became

fascinated with miniatures. She spied a book on

how to make flowers, and before she knew it she

had made so many flowers that she needed to

make a miniature florist shop. There was no

turning back.

She went to her first houseparty and show in

1982, and saw how expensive it was to buy

miniature items back then. For a short time,

Betty and her son Dick sold items at shows-

Dick making trellises and Betty making flowers.

The closest miniatures club to Betty in those

days was in Columbia, and Betty lived in

Baltimore. She was in several other clubs before

she helped found Maryland Miniatures

Unlimited.

Betty continued to be an active member of the

club until last year when her health prohibited

her from participating. Most recently, she

participated in the 2011 and the 2013

MMU/HSBC biennial exhibits as part of the

planning committee and as an exhibitor. We

have valued her at MMU as a founding member

and participant. In 2013 we highlighted Betty

and her work in the Featured Artists section of

the exhibit and the program.

We remember her positive attitude, enthusiasm,

sense of humor and willingness share what she

has learned over the years with the club and the

miniature community. She will be sorely missed.

In memory of Jackie

Foster - Jacqueline

“Jackie” Foster

passed away on

January 10, 2018.

Jackie was a longtime

miniaturist and

friend. She was a

member of Maryland

Miniatures Unlimited, Maryland Half Scalers

and the former Pocket Pals. She was a former

president of Maryland Half Scalers and had co-

chaired miniature exhibits at the Historical

Society of Baltimore County. Jackie’s husband,

Melville, died several years ago. She is survived

by her daughter Robin (Chris) and son Chris

(Sharon) and three grandchildren.

Both of these lovely ladies will be sorely missed.

Around Our Region

December Holiday Party

I would like to say thank you for the lovely Holiday Party that Stacy Moser and her committee of Paula

Driftmyer, Margaret Schroeder and Pat Lazaro put on. The table was set for a lovely party with the “main

course” being a lovely gift box containing our kit. The Puppet Theater was a cute kit with a lot of the

work already done.

The group was small, but all had a good time and enjoyed the day. I even got most of the work done

before I left for the day. Now I need to decide what “play” in want to stage in my Puppet Theater.

Again, thanks to Stacy and her committee.

~Yvonne Ayoroa

Logan Wilhelm, one of our members, described her experience.… “Bullock’s was decorated beautifully,

like a fancy Christmas tea party. The project came in a pretty box and there was a set of colored pencils

and a set of markers for each attendee to keep. There was red velvet, gold and other pretty trims to

embellish the front of the theater. The theaters themselves were nicely constructed and stained. The

colors of the scenery were to be filled in with the colors of your choosing. This step took the most time to

complete. There are little actors to be painted as well. Although there were no written instructions, the

project was easy and straightforward, and Stacy made a point of spending time with each guest! There

were great bags of candy at each place and there were 4 door prizes drawn from a ticket in each kit.

Really upset with myself for not having my memory card in my camera bag!!!!! My project is close to

being done, but not quite.”

13

The Virginia Miniature Enthusiasts Club in Richmond has embarked on a year-long

project which will ultimately yield each member a fully decorated Christmas tree.

Club members Carol House and Valli Laneve have teamed up, using their own supplies and knowledge,

to host a workshop at each monthly meeting instructing the group on how to create Christmas tree

ornaments and decorations. The first workshop was in December, and how appropriate to embark on this

adventure during the holiday season. Members contributed to a pot luck luncheon, and there was so much

spirit and festivity in the room.

Valli Laneve was thorough and well-versed as she guided the club through each step to create a tree

ornament. Her message was clear, “use your imagination to decorate a tree of your own style, colors and

technique.” It certainly gave us great pride in our ornaments.

Subsequent workshops during 2018 will include creation of other Christmas tree decorations, ending in

December of 2018. For this club, we’ll be celebrating Christmas the whole year ‘round!!!!

A Year in the Making . . .

One year ago, The Mount Vernon Miniatures Club found a new meeting place at the Fabric

Place Basement in Alexandria, VA, after the John Marshal Library closed for extensive renovations.

Soon after, the idea of a miniature sewing shop as a gift to the store’s management was born.

Members collaborated plans, exhibited sewing shops, minis from peddler dolls made during (State Day

2013?), and initiated fabric bolts. Over (how many??) fabric bolts are included. Donated items poured in

including the room box, a measuring table, display cases, patterns, scissors, buttons, and much more!

Now the gift is nearly complete and we look forward to giving the mini fabric place basement to

management of the real Fabric Place Basement! A gift of thanks for our new meeting place, also our

Wee Friends Club has Reasons to Celebrate, Approaches 30th

Year as a NAME Club

By Barbara Hopkins

Neither bitter cold temperatures nor snow still on the ground (but thankfully, not on most roads) could

stop members of the Wee Friends Miniature Club from gathering in early January for a post-holiday

celebration and pot luck lunch. Our newest member, Canta Pian, arrived from her home in D.C. via an

Uber driver, and past-president Kirsten Enzinger came all the way from Richmond, Virginia, with an

unexpected stop in Fredericksburg after car trouble caused her to detour to a repair shop and a get loaner

car. With these extra efforts made to get there, we were especially happy to be together to share a

delicious meal and the warmth of friendship, to talk miniatures, and to marvel at the fine collection of

Katie Goldfarb, our president and hostess.

Kirsten retired as club president last spring after she and her husband decided to move to Richmond to be

closer to other family members. Treasurer Ramsey Alexander digitally created and printed a memory

book filled with pictures and reminders of club members and events to present to Kirsten in appreciation

for her service and contributions to the club and to the miniature hobby over the years. We hope she can

continue to join us often.

Some of our projects in 2017 were making a fringed, tufted bench; weaving rugs on a simple, home-made

loom; learning to create resin “water” scenes and food items; sewing throw pillows from scratch; and re-

upholstering a chair. Club members planned and led most of these projects. For the resin class, we

traveled to the home of Sue Ann Ketchum who guided us in making a pond, a bird bath fountain, and

drinks in a pitcher and glasses.

In May we celebrated the club’s anniversary with lunch and a shopping spree at Ruth Dubois’ miniature

stores in Olney and Gaithersburg. This spring, we will celebrate our 30th

anniversary as a NAME club.

Our members live in six Maryland counties; Washington, D.C.; and now two Virginia counties. Last year

we helped celebrate the 100th

birthday of member Eleanor Abbey, who downsized her miniature

collection in 2016 but still has an interest and love of the hobby and attends meetings when she can.

We look forward to another year of mini projects and many good times together as we plan our calendar

for the months ahead.
